'adore'

Why is it that every other thread on here uses the word 'adore' when referring to liking something a lot?
He 'adores' her
I 'adore' ketchup
DD 'adores' peppa pig
FGS. When in real life to people use the word adore in a sentence? Like on the soaps, nobody uses it. Even Eileen, poor deluded dear, doesn't ever say she adores Pat Phelan. At work, I have never heard anyone say it, nor my kids peers, nor my friends.
Is it a MN thing? I can't think of a more unnatural sounding word to use in conversation, and it seems odd to read it so often!

Or perhaps there is a class association and subsequent effort to use it to maintain some kind of keyboard warrior socioeconomic status thing....

I hear it used a fair bit in real life. I'm not posh. It's a nice word and much better than everyone saying they 'love' something. Love is very overused.

Idontdowindows · 24/02/2018 21:19

I regularly use the word adore in real life in a sentence. But only when that sentence pertains to adoring my tender beloved.

I regularly hear the word adore in real life in sentences, usually when those sentences are by mothers about their babies. Adorable feetsies are a thing (and to be fair, they were indeed adorable feetsies).

Tistheseason17 · 24/02/2018 21:21

I adore the word, adore.... 🤣🤣

acquiesce · 24/02/2018 21:23

Love the Corrie reference!
I’m the opposite of posh and tell DS ‘oh I just adore you!’ When he does something cute

starlightafar · 24/02/2018 21:23

See love is common speech. Maybe that's it. People use adore so they stand apart from the masses...
Similar to 'pertains'. A word which means the same as more commonly used words, but with an edge of superiority perhaps?!
I'm joking.
But adore is a word I can't take to at all. Seems weird to read for some reason.

The most over used word is ‘amazing’, I stop myself ever using it.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 24/02/2018 21:25

Same as Tis , it's one one of my fave words... 😂

OutyMcOutface · 24/02/2018 21:25

I hear it all the time irl. 50% of the time it's meant ironically. It's quite a useful word when you think about it-obsessed with and likes very much all tied together in one neat little package.

YABU. I adore the word. And use it a lot. It’s fabulous.

AfterSchoolWorry · 24/02/2018 21:26

I don't really use adore, but I do say adorable.

And 'adorbs' Blush

frasier · 24/02/2018 21:26

I use it. I think I use it a lot, in speech I mean. And "adorable".

starlightafar · 24/02/2018 21:28

Holy but amazing does not replace adore. Adore and amazing are different. Like verbs or adjectives or something.....(will never be an English teacher)
Outy that is the best description. Obsessed with and likes. I now understand.
But still don't like the word. It's awful. Just is Angry

I once even named a cat Tiseye.....

I adored him.

starlightafar · 24/02/2018 21:46

Urgh. 'Adored'. Add that to the list. Lucky to get liked in my house let alone adored. It just sounds so luvviefied and pretentious. Like a word used in Love Actually
Are your tongues not aching??

fairgame84 · 24/02/2018 21:47

MadameMaxGoesler · 24/02/2018 21:51

Les Francais adorent le Piat D'Or.

Tistheseason17 · 24/02/2018 21:54

@starlightafar
😁
I've also just been rollocked on another thread for my inappropriate use of, "love you"- oh the shame!

And yep, LTB!

Flomper · 24/02/2018 21:57

id never say adore, id say "really like". I like adorbs though!

I'm not common enough to watch soap operas so I dont know whats said there, but irl I hear it a bit.

starlightafar · 24/02/2018 21:59

I can cope with 'adorbs'...it's a pisstaking word. A bit like me.
Maybe I have issues with vulnerability and showing my feelings.
PMSL madame.
Funny enough we have French and Spanish roots and the use of adore/ador in those languages is totally natural. But coming out of the British mouth?
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
'love you' is something I embarrass my kids with on a daily basis.

OP posts:
starlightafar · 24/02/2018 22:02

Flomper. I like 'really like'.
So maybe not a class thing, as you're not common Smile
'Totes' is equally wanky. Sorry.
