'adore'

Why is it that every other thread on here uses the word 'adore' when referring to liking something a lot?
He 'adores' her
I 'adore' ketchup
DD 'adores' peppa pig
FGS. When in real life to people use the word adore in a sentence? Like on the soaps, nobody uses it. Even Eileen, poor deluded dear, doesn't ever say she adores Pat Phelan. At work, I have never heard anyone say it, nor my kids peers, nor my friends.
Is it a MN thing? I can't think of a more unnatural sounding word to use in conversation, and it seems odd to read it so often!

I use it frequently, so do my friends.
Gasp, we also like to 'French it up' sometimes and say
"J'adore"

We are middle class and fancy though! Wink

Oh no. Fake foreign ness.
Different world.
No excuse for using adore in English.
It is up there with slug painted eyebrows.

@starlightafar
I'm with you on slug eyebrows- especially when several shades off!

lecossaise · 24/02/2018 22:13

I definitely use it in speech, it means something different from live or really like... I wouldn't say those have the connotations of both loving and worshipping someone/thing that 'adore' has.

GrannyGrissle · 24/02/2018 22:24

But isn't MN a safe space where we can adore to our hearts content? I prefer a good swear on here myself keeps my language clean for DD Grin

starlightafar · 24/02/2018 22:28

See I don't worship anyone. Many people worship God but don't adore him. But the bible says that God adores us. So it must mean a very powerful kind of love.
Who would you put in conversation with it?
I just think it sounds weird.
Can't see why Eileen isn't using it having confirmed that tbh.
Tis they're everywhere. Horrible.

My dh says he adores me, it does make me feel a bit bleugh. Mind you hes a fifty billion times a day "i love you" kinda man.

Slug eyebrows... well...

Foxsox · 24/02/2018 22:34

Slug eyebrows !!!
They are a whole different game & not one I want to play!
Yuck

starlightafar · 24/02/2018 22:34

Just out of interest then, when people say adore, do they do so in a serious or pisstaking way?

OP posts:
BrazzleDazzleDay · 24/02/2018 22:34

@starlightafar I love the word cunt Grin my dm hates the words cunt and pish, so of course I bloody love them!

lecossaise · 24/02/2018 22:36

I don't mean a serious kind of worship necessarily. Like a conversation with a friend might go:
Her "ugh I can't stand David Mitchell."
Me "oh my god I ADORE him."

SmurfOrTerf · 24/02/2018 23:05

I hate Urg
I've never noticed it on MN before, and today its on like eleventy billion threads

waiting for someone to turn up and say they hate eleventy billion

Idontdowindows · 25/02/2018 08:59

Just out of interest then, when people say adore, do they do so in a serious or pisstaking way?

When talking about my husband it's serious, yes. I do adore him.

When talking about baby feetses... well, you have to admit, they can be quite adorable.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 25/02/2018 09:03

Never realised it until now but I say it a lot.

Meandmy4 · 25/02/2018 09:09

Well i was going to join in but ......
I will just pick up my totes adorable asda bag, take me and my adorbs eye slugs (x 7 shades lighter obvs ) and fuck off to have a nose up at another cunty thread then

Grin I cant help it today !
starlightafar · 26/02/2018 19:00

Nothing from asda is adorable. Just saying.

starlightafar · 26/02/2018 19:01

Actually Idont, babies feet are indeed adorable.
Wouldn't catch me referring to another adult as adorable though. Noone can match babies feet.

I loathe slug eyebrows. Though when they are absolutely massive and really obviously the wrong colour they are morbidly fascinating. I struggle to look away. Often they seem to be combined with a shade of foundation that can only be described as "oompa loompa"

I do adore DD, but don't remember ever saying this out loud. Maybe I should start?
