Is this the most perverted thuggish you've ever seen?

DP noticed our new washing up bowl can hang above the sink space if you balance it with its handles - see third pic with an egg cup underneath.

He truly thinks this is a sensible way to store it, and so after washing up etc he always replaces it like this. Then puts things in the levitating washing up bowl to soak etc.

It drives me mad. It is clearly grotesque. His argument is that it means its not sitting in the sink possibly collecting scum from when we tip stuff down the side of the bowl down the sink. I can see his point but a) this rarely happens and b) I'd rather a bit of scum on the bottom of the bowl than a washing up bowl which looks like it's met a very unusual snake charmer.

WIBU?

That garish snot-green colour is thuggish, certainly.

Under our sink there is a cupboard with room for dishwasher tablets and assorted cloths, no room for a washing up bowl. And I'd hate to put something wet inside a cupboard, and I think I'm too lazy to dry the bowl thoroughly, so that's definitely not going to work for me.

Fekko are you my DP? If so 🖐️ hello!

Er, I do that.

Well, I suspend my washing up bowl, anyway. We have a sort of metal stand with plastic feet, which holds it a couple of centimetres off the bottom of the sink.

But in our old house I would turn the bowl round 90° so it was wedged. I would always have replaced it to soak things or wash up, though.

I think he has good intentions but crap execution Grin

LinkyPlease · 24/02/2018 19:07

It is a grim colour I agree. My previous washing up bowl was much nicer but it had a little plug in the bottom which I lost trying to save water by throwing bowl fulls of used veg washing water onto the lawn in summer and my mum bought & brought me this one as her contributing to Xmas eve dinner. She has strong views on everyone having a washing up bowl and 'handily' she passes a pound shop on the walk to my house

My mum leave our washing up bowl like this, but I can’t complain as it’s usually after she’s done all our dishes for us Blush
Clearly the correct way is upturned, propped up on the tap, to allow any water to drain away.

MrsHathaway · 24/02/2018 19:09

I have a dishwasher but I don't understand the point in bowls?? I never had one pre dishwasher days. What's the point? I'd ditch the bowl.

  1. The plastic is a better insulator than ceramic/steel etc so the washing up water stays hotter for longer.
  1. The bowl is smaller than the sink so you don't need to run as much hot water to fill it.
  1. If you don't have a double sink, you can pour that half-cup of tea down the side of the bowl to drain away rather than getting stuck unable to wash up.
NeeChee · 24/02/2018 19:11

We had a washing up bowl when we first moved in because the sink was pretty grim, and was constantly getting paint brushes and various tools washed in it. Now the dishwasher is in, the bowls have been relegated to the garden.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 24/02/2018 19:16

Yabu for having a washing up bowl when you have a lovely a sink/workbench as you do! I have to use a washing up bowl but that’s because our sink has a crack in it the leaks into the cupboard underneath - not massively so but not so bad that we can get away with putting it at the bottom of renovations list (we bought a doer-upper/dump)

OtterInDisgrace · 24/02/2018 19:17

I do this. I even wash up with it in its levitated position.

NotAgainYoda · 24/02/2018 19:19

Also. (Sorry). It's a horrible colour

rogermooresfifthwife · 24/02/2018 19:22

Why do people have these? Surely the sink is for washing up in?

Oldraver · 24/02/2018 19:31

I've got a wire rack thing that sits in the bottom of the sink and keeps the bowl off the bottom as we had one of those plugs that rise up. It does stop the bottom of the bowl scumming up but is one more thing to wash

BumDisease · 24/02/2018 19:32

You're all being unreasonable for calling it a washing up bowl.

It's a basin! Grin

ButtMuncher · 24/02/2018 20:07

Washing up bowls should be upturned and drained on a draining board or tipped at an angle against the taps. Your DH is BU Grin

flumpybear · 24/02/2018 20:13

You've got the same
Kitchen as me! Same blue granite, door colour and handles Wink

We don't use a bowl at all tho it ruins the look imo

AppleKatie · 24/02/2018 20:14

I) I wouldn’t have a washing up bowl in my sink permentantly

II) but if did/or lived with someone who insisted on one I would do exactly what your DH has done. It’s sensible and cleaner.

BrutusMcDogface · 24/02/2018 20:19

Yuk yuk yuk! I've never had a washing up bowl. My mum didn't understand their purpose (and neither do I). The washing up bowls I've had the misfortune of encountering in house shares/etc have been slimy and disgusting. It seems to me that stsoenfingvit is s good idea. Let it air its bottom a bit.

The green is rather fetching, though! Wink

BrutusMcDogface · 24/02/2018 20:20

*suspending it!!

Ski40 · 24/02/2018 20:23

I don't have a bowl. Things go directly into the dishwasher or if it's full or running then on the side or washed then and there, under a running tap. Photo is amusing though xx😄

Earlyup · 24/02/2018 20:29

I'm with him on the gunk argument. My in-laws do this but our bowl is too small so we sort of prop it upside-down against the tap...

AnoiaUnstickMyDrawers · 25/02/2018 10:42

Thanks OP, because of this thread I have discovered I can suspend my bowl too, so it doesn't get scummy if stuff is tipped down the sink. Bloody brilliant Grin

LadySainsburySeal · 25/02/2018 10:46

I hate washing up bowls left in the sink when not in use.

HuskyMcClusky · 25/02/2018 10:51

They are rank. I hate these fuckers!

My sink is made of stainless steel, which scrubs properly clean, unlike plastic (harbours bacteria in scratches).

Just empty all cups before you fill the sink. Is not difficult.

If your sink is too big, don’t fill it all the way. Job done.

CoalitionOfChaos · 25/02/2018 11:02

Urgh I thought only old people still used washing up bowls.
Why do you wash up when you have a dishwasher?
It looks disgusting whatever way you have it and spoils the look of your kitchen.
Ditch it altogether.

hmmwhatatodo · 25/02/2018 11:06

Why did you choose a lime green one? I’m taking up issue with your colour choice.
