Posting in AIBU for traffic. But also because I know IABU not to want to devote hours of my time to crafting costumes for my precious dc.

What I want is costume ideas which optimise the effort to results ratio: good costumes, looking like the family has made a modicum of effort, which minimally tax my time and finances.

We have a large toy penguin and DS has a stripy top so he is going as the boy from Lost and Found

flaggerblasted · 26/02/2018 16:40

Best one I have ever seen is a Mum sending her DS into school with a plastic bucket full of toy dinosaurs 'Harry and his bucketful of dinosaurs'. She gets my working mum award for inventiveness 😁

funnyfoursome · 26/02/2018 16:44

I offered my DS the bucketful of dinosaurs one but he didn't go for it - brilliant!

DD has to take in Fruit or Veg dressed as a book character, FFS, she wants to take an advocado, any ideas anyone? I see a PP having to dress a potato, is this a thing now or just DD’s twatty school.

Ds went as Horrid Henry last year. Jeans, striped top and spiky hair, done!
This year he wanted to be Toothless the dragon from 'How to train your dragon'!
I got Dp onto that! He's much more arty than me. He's made wings, a tail and a mask (x2 as ds2 had to be like big bro!)
Ds's both thrilled and dp has lots of brownie points!!! Good luck to everyone! I'm glad the school I work in doesn't dress up!

I've not rtft so sorry if this has been suggested but I've just printed off a load of £50 notes and stapled them to an old top = Billionnaire Boy

Fruitloopcowabunga · 26/02/2018 19:11

Bonkersblond - we had that. DD had a potato as Dennis the Menace - black pompom for hair, drew on face and I did actually go to the effort of knitting a few rows of red and black wool for his top.

BottleBeach · 26/02/2018 21:00

Bonkersblond - it would have to be the Avocado Baby by John Birningham, surely?! Just add a doll.

5BlueHydrangea · 26/02/2018 21:05

Dauphinois can you print some £50 notes for me please?!

My dd is wearing a Giraffe onesie (good for the predicted snow..) and going as the Giraffe from 'The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me'
She is a bit obsessed with 'A series of unfortunate events' so have suggested she go as Violet Baudelaire - wear a nice dress, and hold a baby (doll) but she has declined that one!

indyandlara · 26/02/2018 21:08

My class asked me if we were dressing up for WBD. They were very unhappy when I said no but more understanding when we talked through the economics of the whole thing. I’m hoping their parents feel the same. Lots of reading bases activities here but no overpriced supermarket costumes!

sanitygirl · 27/02/2018 11:39

My 7 year old will go as Percy Jackson - normal clothes - jeans, tshirt, trainers, plus a biro for "Riptide". Easy!

My 11 year old trickier - she wants to do something "amazing" as it will be her last one (I hope - please don't say they have to do it at secondary!). I'm loving the Lion, Witch Wardrobe idea and also the Grand High Witch so will suggest those to her.

Butchmanda · 27/02/2018 21:26

It's all very well coming up with great and simple ideas. But the problem I have always had is getting my kids to agree. They never say 'what a good idea mummy'. Grrrr.
