Working mother’s World Book Day survival guide

Posting in AIBU for traffic. But also because I know IABU not to want to devote hours of my time to crafting costumes for my precious dc.

What I want is costume ideas which optimise the effort to results ratio: good costumes, looking like the family has made a modicum of effort, which minimally tax my time and finances.

I got a cheap black cloak and wand from eBay - we’ve recently read the first 2 Harry Potter books with DS (6) and he wears glasses anyway so those plus a scar drawn on with eyeliner is an easy and recognisable costume!

Last year he went as the boy in The Giraffe, the Pelly and me - normal clothes with a toy monkey and giraffe.

lifetothefull · 22/02/2018 22:40

I suggested to dd that she goes as daisy from Daisy and the trouble with life. All she needs to do is take in a sherbert dib dab and keep asking to go to the toilet every minute.

Longhairmightcare · 22/02/2018 22:49

My first year of world book day.
Going for Angelina Ballerina, as DD can use her existing ballet outfit. Bought mouse ears/tail set from Amazon for £5 and will draw whiskers on face.

We’ve got a vast array of Disney princess fancy dress, that I would have used in an emergency but I feel like the A.B costume will look like I’ve made enough of an effort without actually going to that much effort.Grin

And of course DD likes and reads her Angelina Ballerina book, obvs.

BottleBeach · 22/02/2018 23:00

Thank you for posting this reminder. Every year DS’s school make no mention of it at all, then the afternoon before they send a ‘Don’t forget WBD tomorrow! Year 2 will need to come dressed up as a character from The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’ text message, which I get while I’m at work, and that’s me trying to fashion an owl costume out of a feather boa at 1am. Not this year, fuckers!

MsMarple · 22/02/2018 23:01

You can do Wimpy Kid pretty easily if you have some white card to draw a big face on.

So far my plan has been to look at the dressing up we have already, and then find a book to match it - sheep/pirates/cats/knights whatever. Sometimes easier to raid the library/amazon for a book to match the costume than the other way round!

DrCoconut · 22/02/2018 23:03

DS2's school just bring in books.

MsMarple · 22/02/2018 23:06

Oh and facepaints is another option - you could do all sorts of different animals from books without too much bother.

lurkeyishere · 22/02/2018 23:10

My kid had a kilner jar filled with cotton wool paint and glitter with his dreams labelled on the front he wore his pyjamas and he was a child from the BFG

endoflevelbaddy · 22/02/2018 23:14

Haven't RTFT so apologies if already suggested but my life saver last year was Sophie from the BFG - nightie, cardigan and glasses.
This year DD1 going as thing 1 & thing 2 with her mate - £5 for a tshirt on amazon. DD2 is in reception this year and we're recycling DD1s costumes 🙈 she will be the Worst Princess - Disney princess dress and Converse Wink

Friend's dc at a state primary have been told to go as a character from a specific Shakespeare play. Quick way to get most parents cross.

Merrilymerrilymerrily · 22/02/2018 23:30

Mr Bump is pretty easy. Some bandages wrapped around a blue top and blue beanie.

R2G · 23/02/2018 01:12

Easiest one I did was Georges marvellous medicine... top and jeans, wooden spoon and A bottle with a potion in. He loved making the potion. Taped up securely so couldn't be opened at school. Sorted.

dentydown · 23/02/2018 01:16

I’ve just gone for amazon finest. My son wants to be a pterodactyl. It won’t be a waste of 12 quid because there are quite a few occasions when he wants to be one. (Going to the supermarket etc) and he’s grown out of his other costume!

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 23/02/2018 01:36

Every year, I sent my 4 sons in normal school uniform with a sign saying "Play Up! Play Up" Play the Game" and told them to shout "Vitea Lampada" at anyone who asked what they were dressed as.
My daughter also went at least 3 WBD in "boys" uniform (borrowed from her brothers) with the same sign :D :D

Worlds0kayestmum · 23/02/2018 01:49

Mine is wearing black leggings, an alien t-shirt, alien head boppers and a pair of pants on her head and over her leggings. Aliens Love Underpants

WattdeEll · 23/02/2018 02:07

Tintin - plain blue jumper or one of supermarket cheap blue school uniform range £3ish in Asda. Normal school uniform but roll up trousers and wear long grey socks under. School shoes and gel for hair.

If your DC uniform is already blue, just turn the jumper inside out to hide the logo. Wink

Land0r · 23/02/2018 09:32

At our school, WBD was announced in plenty of time and the date etc info has been repeated weekly via Twitter and Facebook which they use a lot to communicate with parents. Loads of time to get things sorted which was great. Then just this morning they announced that plans have changed, children must come in school uniform as normal (no costumes allowed) bringing a 'home-made, book-themed cake' to sell at an after school cake stall. WHAT??

BigFishy · 23/02/2018 20:12

Just place marking for ideas.
