...to be ever so slightly iritated that everyone admires my parents Jack Russel and ignores my lovely litle boy?

Every Wednesday my parents meet me outside work to pick up DS#2. As soon as they open the door of the car the dog rushed over to say hello to DS and me. My boy rushes out to stroke him and usually has a little run about on the grass with him whilst I swap the car seats over.

Later in work hordes of people come up to me and tell me how nice the bloody dog is! OK.. he is, but my little lad is lovely too. Lively, happy, smiling, curly-haired little tike and he is beautiful! Why doesn't anyone mention him? Is it too personal or do they just not notice kids.

I know it's unreasonable of me so don't even answer the question....

oh I hate it when dogs come first, I went out walking our new pup (also a jack russell) so many people came rushing over to stroke him (which I'm developing a Grrrr for as I'm trying to train him and people keep mucking it up) A woman came past and said oh lovely dog blar blar blar and said 'oh you wait he will soon be above the children' I was shocked and said 'He will NEVER come before my children'

powder28 · 03/05/2007 11:27

say 'never mind the f*ckin dog, what about the boy!'

They may think you are mental though, so don't say that

foxinsocks · 03/05/2007 11:29

you can't win

there are always countless threads on here saying 'why do people feel the need to comment on my baby'

they are probably commenting on your dog so they can get closer and catch a look at your gorgeous boy

OrmIrian · 03/05/2007 11:39

Aha! Might be, fox...

There is a nest of gossipy older ladies in he accounts dept (right next to me) who are always discussing their various pets and animals generally. But you never hear them talking about their grandchildren .

In this age of poorly-trained big dogs attacking children, maybe what they are admiring is the rare sight of a small child playing happily and freely with a family pet?
On the other hand, I know plenty of older people (eg MIL) who think more of their pet than their grandchildren ormirian so you are probably on to something there

Twiglett · 03/05/2007 11:48

face it .. dogs are cuter than kids

LieselVentouse · 03/05/2007 11:49

I used to do this also BC (before children)

morningpaper · 03/05/2007 11:50

that's because of the thread "I bloody hate it when people touch my kids and bother me and stop from me getting on with my chores, the old witches"

No they aren't. Not in general. I like kids as long as they aren't screaming that is.

Yes I suppose I did too speccy. In fact I was very child-intolerant pre-kids. But most of the people I work with have kids.

However I guess I will just have to accept that my LO is pearl before swine.

problem is, that sometimes even dog owners aren't very happy when you admire their pets.

hercules1 · 03/05/2007 11:58

In this age of poorly trained big dogs attacking children??

The incidents of dogs attacking children hasnt risen. It seems like it because of the publicity attached to it. Imagine if every time a child got hit by a car it was publicised in the same way?

I'm not saying dogs shouldnt be trained but very dog is capable of biting a child in the right circumstances. A lot of the time it's luck if you have a dog and it doesnt bite your child.

hercules1 · 03/05/2007 11:59

I prefer dogs to children too (apart from my own kids of course!)

trippleshot · 03/05/2007 12:30

I'm having a spectacular falling out with the woman I've asked to be my 11 wk old son's godmother because I said that if her dog went for my boy I'd kill it.

kslatts · 03/05/2007 12:34

I think you are being unreasonable. I have 2 dd's who I think are really cute, when we got our dog as a puppy my dd's were 5 and 2 and we would all go to the park. Loads of people stopped to say how cute our puppy was, nobody commented on how cute my dd's were, it never crossed my mind to be annoyed by this.

OrmIrian · 03/05/2007 13:33

On second thoughts perhaps 'bemused' is more accurate than 'irritated'. Would that be more acceptable kslatts? .

The account ladies are at it again. Woman with 2 fluffy dogs walking along river bank outside window. Cooing and ahhhing over them....

I thought it was normal for the British to like dogs more than people

MeAndMyMonkey · 03/05/2007 14:54

Not majorly unreasonable, no, but I have to admite to subscribing to the 'dogs (and cats) are cuter than kids' mentality... sorry! I thought that before having a baby and still do!
I'm very much afraid I will always rush up and stroke a random puppy but don't tend to rush up to unsuspecting babies for a stroke. probably a good job, eh?

OrmIrian · 03/05/2007 18:09

Probably monkey

Hillls · 03/05/2007 18:11

Ah do you know what I got so crabby out walking our new pup today, everyone runs towards it to go all silly, I'm trying to teach it to sit at the traffic lights and people are calling it over, I'm probably going to loose it tomorrow!

mama04 · 07/03/2013 22:26

Hills I know how u feel, my Dh told me I actually growled at a kid today Grin little turds! X

Dannilion · 07/03/2013 22:35

"in the age of poorly trained big dogs attacking children"

Ignorant comment. The last death of a child due to a dog attack in the UK was a Jack Russell was it not?

This hysteria that big dogs are evil, child mauling machines does my head in.

StuntGirl · 07/03/2013 22:37

I think dogs are cuter than kids too...sorry!
