AIBU to expect a tea pot!

Currently on holiday in Cornwall in luxury caravan on a newly refurbished site. It's got a dishwasher and washer/dryer, a nice glass cafetiere but no teapot!!!! There is one glass casserole dish but no other serving dishes or bowls - I'm using the colander as a fruit bowl.

I've never stayed anywhere in the UK where a teapot has not been provided. I would have brought my own if I had known!!!

What are your must-haves when self-catering?

Much quicker to make a pot of tea for 5 that faff about with tea bags in every mug, it worked in our office as we took it in turns! We are all different

Can’t believe no one’s mentioned a measuring jug! We’ve got one that has dry good measures too and bring it along with us when we self cater. Along with sharp knife (if holidaying in uk), extra tea towels and cling film.

BarbaraofSevillle · 22/02/2018 14:28

Quite frankly I just don't have time to faff around with a teapot at work, not to mention the extra washing up

What extra washing up? Teapots don't need washing, just a quick rinse before each pot is made. They also make far better tea, you have a second cup ready and waiting for you, more efficient use of teabags and just easier all round. What's not to like.

WaxOnFeckOff · 22/02/2018 14:30

What's not to like. Tea! :o

starfishmummy · 22/02/2018 14:40

Lonicera we return to the same cottage most years and there are baking tins, scales and a small food mixer should I feel the need to whip up a cake. Not that I do. We know where the good bakery is!!

deptfordgirl · 22/02/2018 14:40

I wouldn't even know how to use a teapot!

lljkk · 22/02/2018 14:44

I use a cafetière to brew tea. It works just as well.

Doesn't it make the tea taste like coffee? I loathe smell & taste of coffee.

PuppyMonkey · 22/02/2018 14:47

I have an aversion to teapots due to living in too many places where people leave the manky teabags in there afterwards and you’ve always got to fish them out for the next brew and then the teapot smells all whiffy.

Tea tastes exactly the same done in a mug. As long as the mug is white. Wink

Holiday home must haves for me would be a decent sharp knife. A nd a hook for a tea towel.

Evelynismycatsformerspyname · 22/02/2018 14:49

Big mugs are the thing we take with us. Lots of places have silly little dainty cups and no proper mugs!

shetookshelter · 22/02/2018 15:05

Of course it does if people are using teabags in a pot. Who does that?? The whole point of a teapot is to use fresh leaves, surely? Bizarre.

PuppyMonkey · 22/02/2018 15:17

Well not necessarily shetook, OP implied she used a teapot at work as it’s quicker/easier than putting five teabags in five separate mugs. Smile

shetookshelter · 22/02/2018 15:22

Yeah I just reread some posts I missed and seems a number of people are using teapots with teabags. That's still bizarre. It must save about 4 seconds at most.

If you're gonna use a tea pot, put loose tea in the pot, people! Then pour it into the mugs through a strainer. Still quicker than 5 teabags and will taste a lot better.

LoniceraJaponica · 22/02/2018 15:25

“They also make far better tea, you have a second cup ready and waiting for you, more efficient use of teabags and just easier all round. What's not to like.”

I never want more than one cup of tea at a time, so to me it is a waste to use a pot just for one cup.

PuppyMonkey · 22/02/2018 15:34

The tea is also far too stewed by the second cup Lonicera

BarbaraofSevillle · 22/02/2018 15:41

It's not bizarre, it's just easier, not having to deal with loose leaves. I'm quite happy with my teabags in a pot and I don't have to worry about working out how much tea to use or knocking it over and it going everywhere.

The amount of loose tea in the supermarket is tiny - nearly everyone is using bags now.

InsomniacAnonymous · 22/02/2018 15:44

It's several years since I had a cup of tea, so I wouldn't even look for a teapot. My husband drinks tea, but is happy to make it in a mug.

shetookshelter · 22/02/2018 15:47

Agreed –that's why most people on this thread have said they don't use teapots!

I'm not against teabags or anything. I just don't see any tangible benefit to putting a bunch of them in a pot. I thought the point of a pot was to make a better tea, not to save a few seconds.

PuppyMonkey · 22/02/2018 15:48

“It's several years since I had a cup of tea”

That’s the saddest thing I ever read. Grin

Follyfoot · 22/02/2018 15:50

I'm really surprised at the amount of stuff people take. We self cater 6 or 7 times a year and I've never taken anything. We have bought big mugs a few times when the ones provided were too small, but never anything else.

Laiste · 22/02/2018 16:01

We don't use a tea pot. Big family. DH is a builder loves tea and the kettle is pretty much permanently either about to boil or just emptied Grin

If self catering i'll take

  • rubber gloves
  • non stick frying pan
  • string
  • pegs
  • tin opener
  • washing up brush

Wouln't miss a fruit bowl or a salad bowl. All we need is lots of plates (to dish up the chippy chips) a couple of saucepans and a couple of frying pans (for the cooked breakfast) :)

BeBesideTheSea · 22/02/2018 16:09

We own a caravan, and if looking to rent it out (we don’t) there was a long list of things we had to provide, including teapot, fruit bowl and egg cups.

Pop to the office and complain - they will probably have a pack they can give you.

shetookshelter · 22/02/2018 16:13

Laiste - String? That has piqued my curiosity.

Housewife2010 · 22/02/2018 16:15

Tea is horrid brewed in a mug. I always use a pre-warmed teapot (and a tea cosy).

LakieLady · 22/02/2018 16:18

I don't cook on holiday (we eat out or get takeaways), but in the days when I did, I always used to take my own potato peeler (I can only use one sort of peeler!) and my sharp kitchen that I use for nearly everything.

Things I have found missing in the past include casserole dishes, cheese graters, whisks and measuring jugs. I've stayed in plenty of places that have had tea pots and strainers though, including a narrowboat.

CaptainHammer · 22/02/2018 17:34

Coffe There’s a fruitbowl and oven gloves in the photos on their website so I’d definitely expect those!
