AIBU to expect a tea pot!

Currently on holiday in Cornwall in luxury caravan on a newly refurbished site. It's got a dishwasher and washer/dryer, a nice glass cafetiere but no teapot!!!! There is one glass casserole dish but no other serving dishes or bowls - I'm using the colander as a fruit bowl.

I've never stayed anywhere in the UK where a teapot has not been provided. I would have brought my own if I had known!!!

What are your must-haves when self-catering?

A teapot?! You nutter

Shinygoldbauble · 22/02/2018 11:09

I much prefer using a teapot even for 2 people. I've been known to use a large jug for the purpose if a teapot isn't provided.

MyKingdomForBrie · 22/02/2018 11:09

I was going to say the cafetière would do just as well. More surprised at the lack of dishes!

CoffeAndCream · 22/02/2018 11:13

I'm shocked at how many people make tea in a mug, everyone I know uses a teapot. I hate tea made in a mug and you can't go back for a top up from the pot.

We stay in self-catering accommodation a few times a year and I always go prepared with my sharp knife, pressure cooker and a few bits and bobs. Currently cooking some vegetable soup to have before we go for a nice long walk on the beach.

I stayed in a luxury caravan once and it did have a teapot but it had been used and not emptied!

I would expect a teapot and decent cups and a fruit bowl because they always have photos of a fruit bowl full when advertising. Perhaps the teapot and fruit bowl had been nicked?

I would pass this on to the office.

MyDcAreMarvel · 22/02/2018 11:15

That tea is impressive op, looks like coffee it's so strong.

Ginorchoc · 22/02/2018 11:16

Have you not seen the Tea tip post going around the Internet. Plug in the sink, teabags added, pour the hot water in and you dunk your tea cup in the sink to consume tea as required Brew

CoffeAndCream · 22/02/2018 11:16

It's the lighting!! lol

Gosh I have a whole kit bag that I take on self catering holidays that I replenish after the holiday and then leave into the cupboard under the stairs until the next holiday.
Things that often seem to be lacking
Baking sheets
Collendars
Pyrex dishes (especially useful in the microwave)
Decent sized mugs
There also seems to be a lack of information on the idiosyncracies of the various appliances in these places as well, especially washing machines and washer driers.
One thing that I always take away with me is a pair of oven gloves I've ruined far to many tea towels in the past.

SpringEquinox · 22/02/2018 11:18

I'm not looking for the full on tea ceremony experience but I do prefer tea made in a pot - bags are fine, they just seem to brew better and then there is the second cup. Bag in mug in an emergency and a holiday is not an emergency.

ineedwine99 · 22/02/2018 11:24

Large wine glasses
Cooking oil - especially given most places don't provided non stick pans

misshannah · 22/02/2018 11:26

I'm going to get abuse hurled at me for saying this but...

Luxury and caravan are two things i don't think go together.

I'm a rough it and tough it person - I've camped all over Europe and last year did some wild camping in Norway, etc. I consider running water and electricity on a campsite a luxury. I didn't even have a mug for tea when wild camping.

shetookshelter · 22/02/2018 11:27

I would not expect one at all, so yes I think YABU. My parents make tea in a teapot but I've never owned one myself, and I don't think most people I know do either.

JaneEyre70 · 22/02/2018 11:29

If I book self-catering, I expect to be able to cook efficiently. There is nothing more annoying than arriving to find a sparsely and charity shop equipped kitchen. And the most annoying is having a dishwasher but only enough plates/mugs for one use. It's tough shit if you want a drink when it's on. I'd count a teapot as an everyday item, we always use our pot if we're making drinks as I hate it made in a mug. It goes all scummy with our hard water that way, but never in the pot.

RatherBeRiding · 22/02/2018 11:29

We always go self catering (UK) and must just have been lucky, as can't remember not having either a teapot or cafetiere. Utensils sometimes a bit hit and miss though.

RollTopBath · 22/02/2018 11:30

Of course there should be a teapot.
Ah just noticed it’s a caravan. Then probably not. Just a tin opener and frying pan, I think.

CaptainHammer · 22/02/2018 11:32

I never use a teapot, no one I know uses a teapot and wouldn’t expect one in a holiday home.
I do approve of your strong cuppa though!

CaptainCardamom · 22/02/2018 11:32

Can't get worked up about a fruit bowl, a plate is fine for that. Teapot doesn't bother me. But I always take my favourite sharp knife to self-catering places, plus teatowels, sandwich bags, kitchen roll, and coffee machine!

The other thing that's a pain is if you want to make a cake - usually no scales, no sieve, no baking trays etc. But I always forget this and end up guessing the quantities and baking it in a casserole dish.

Jux · 22/02/2018 11:33

We must have half a dozen teapots of various sizes. When we used to doself-catering, there was always a teapot. When did that change?

BarbaraofSevillle · 22/02/2018 11:34

I agree, especially as you can buy decent equipment from Ikea, Wilkinsons or supermarkets for a price that is probably a similar or not significantly more.

Chienrouge · 22/02/2018 11:36

Even more shocking, neither DH or I drink tea. Never owned a teapot or indeed any tea bags!
As long as it had a cafetière I’d be happy.

blueskyinmarch · 22/02/2018 11:37

I own a self catering property and am proud to say that I have it stocked with all the things people have mentioned on this thread, including a teapot!

RatherBeRiding · 22/02/2018 11:40

I really don't think it matters whether the self catering is caravan or cottage - if a property is advertised as self-catering then it should have enough equipment for basic catering. Cooking implements, crockery, cutlery, oven dishes.

DaisyStarburst · 22/02/2018 11:41

Never noticed teapots but I'm allergic to tea, always take my own coffee filter thing, just as well if people use the cafetiere for tea! Actually if washed well would probably be ok but I don't take chances.

I would take scissors and a decent knife but would expect everything else to be there.

CaptainCardamom · 22/02/2018 11:47

I have a teapot at home, but it's purely decorative!

It's partly that there are so many types of tea now, and people want different kinds of tea and different strengths. So even when I have people round I end up making tea in mugs.
