Dear toasters

as in, expensive. Aibu to think there can't be anything appreciably or sufficiently different about the toast that comes out of a £199 2-slice toaster, compared to a £9.97 one - these are currently the dearest and cheapest options at J Lewis.....

Ours is a Dualit six slice toaster in pink. It was just over a hundred pounds in 2012. It is much better than cheap pop ups as it’s more durable, you can have elements replaced, it looks good, it can be set to adapt to different breads and has a timer to allow the toasting time to be modified to get the exact colour that you want.

I thought you were addressing the thread to your toaster! As you were...

UnaOfStormhold · 20/02/2018 18:13

For a moment I thought you were writing a letter to your toaster. I often want to ask mine to stop leaving the toast virtually bread the first time I put the lever down, and then burn it to a crisp within moments second time round. Maybe more expensive ones don't do this?

I thought the same! Grin

weve just gone from a dualit 2 slice toaster that i dont know how much my partner aid for it to a £30 in the sale breville 4 slice one and the breville one makes lovely toast better than the dualit

restofthetimes · 20/02/2018 18:17

I've got a cheapo Russell Hobbs, about 8 years old now. It can handle different bread sizes, has adjustable browning. If it broke, I'd chuck it and buy a new one, and it would still be masses cheaper than a dualit.

(I have a dualit in the boot of the car, bough purely because it looks nicer, but I'm wondering whether to crack it open, as it seems so silly)

mumonashoestring · 20/02/2018 18:17

There bloody is.

I once thought as you did - then I bought a 4-slice toaster from the Sainsburys Basics range. The fucker intermittently undercooks, overcooks and cremates bread with absolutely no regard for what setting or type of bread is used. I'd never spend over £50 on a toaster but I'll think hard before spending under £30 again.

missiondecision · 20/02/2018 18:18

Same with a lot of things surely...
Why pay for a Ferrari? A Ford KA will get you there on time.

restofthetimes · 20/02/2018 18:20

Does the dualit toast faster then?

Ferrari goes like shit off a shovel, I can see the difference between that and a Ka......

Dear Toaster,

My kitchen is not a crematorium. Please stop turning my bread to cinders in the mornings. You are on your lowest setting, so aside from throwing you at the wall at 7am, waking up the neighbours, I don't know what else to do with you!

Regards,
Toast-Eater/Spitter-Out-er

yawning801 · 20/02/2018 18:21

Sorry for derailing OP Grin

TopShagger · 20/02/2018 18:22

I usually make toast under the grill (but there will also be other things under there at the same time) - I guess I'm getting old. I gave my last toaster to my mother. I enjoy a bit of grilling.

missiondecision · 20/02/2018 18:23

Does the same job however...

restofthetimes · 20/02/2018 18:24

Haha. I have very bad memories of toast catching alight in pre-toaster young days, so I never grill!

OP posts:
SimonBridges · 20/02/2018 18:24

The thing to be aware of with a Dualit is that you must buy the expensive old fashioned looking ones. The cheaper more modern ones are no where near the same and are not built in the same factory. The big bonus with the proper dualit is that it will never die. You can buy replacement elements for them and there is bugger all else to go wrong. Yes they are expensive but it will outlive you.

restofthetimes · 20/02/2018 18:24

Fast cars are cool (me). Toasters are..... not?

OP posts:
MsHomeSlice · 20/02/2018 18:28

dualit make proper toast...dry out the bread and brown it. Mine can be a bit wilful and the toast sometimes needs turning but I love it anyways

cheapo toasters somehow seem to just warm up the bread to a flabby consistency and somehow just colour the bread a funny tan sort of colour.
Plus cheapo toasters are always breaking down...I have had one toaster for over 20 years it cost me £109

Twenty years of proper toasted toast is priceless when levelled again twenty years of tepid brown disappointments every single morning

MerryShitmas · 20/02/2018 18:30

I quite happily admit I paid $500 for a toaster set (which was microwave toaster and kettle) all matching.
Because I could afford it and I wanted it.
I could've paid less (probably $100 ish for the lot if I went for the cheap non matching option.)
But what can I say; I'm a snob when it comes to these things and I'll happily pay a bit more for something that looks nicer... keeps money flowing in the economy anyhow.

restofthetimes · 20/02/2018 18:33

tepid brown disappointments every single morning - I've never looked at my Russell Hobbs offerings quite like this!

(I fucking love them and have to stop myself scoffing too much, could toast be better?)

OP posts:
HerbNotErb · 20/02/2018 18:33

I would like a toaster that managed to toast the whole slice of bread.
If I put the slice in one way there is a bit that remains in toasted, if I turn the slice around it has to be rammed in and remains squashed for the duration of toasting.

Lentilbaby · 20/02/2018 18:34

I love my Dualit 4 slice original toaster. It looks fab in my kitchen. It’s not a necessity at all but a pure luxury Confused

restofthetimes · 20/02/2018 18:35

HerbNotErb - mine does this, you just lie it down. Its really long though, and fugly.

Deliberate and unapologetic thread derailment but.... what do you put on your toast?!

restofthetimes · 20/02/2018 18:41

Mainly butter. Marmalade is a goodie too.
