To ask if this is a normal house spider?

Changed name in case DH comes I here. DH has put a huge ducking spider in DSs spider farm. He found it in the bath. I think it's markings look unusual (not that I've ever examined a spider the size of a plate before!).

Is it a normal spider? I don't usually freak out about spiders (mice are another thing) but I just can't shake the feeling that a spider that big has a whole lot of wrong going on.

The body is about 2 cm long and legs about 4.

We have wolf spiders as big as my hand here in South Australia. As a Brit I've never got used to them.

I once bought a box of apples from a neighbour and when I took them into the kitchen, this BEAST came out and it was literally looking me square in they eye.

Like a meatier version of yours, with striped legs and as big as my hand. Shock

steff13 · 19/02/2018 23:03

DS was given it as a present.

By someone who hates you???

Gacapa · 19/02/2018 23:04

I'd be burning that farm down.

freakyspider · 19/02/2018 23:04

Steph I bloody hope not! I reckon it was a present drawer thing.

I peacefully coexist with spiders in the house unless they are massive meaty fuckers - then it's out with the spider catcher and out the window with the spider!

GladAllOver · 19/02/2018 23:10

Gross over-reactions here.
If DS wants to keep spiders like this one it's a positive thing. He will learn that it's wrong to kill harmless creatures, and you might learn from him too.

Angie169 · 19/02/2018 23:19

I get them dudes in my house quite often perfectly harmless plus it will munch all the other little bugs in your house . I hope your spider farm is big as they can roam quite a long way , it would be cruel to keep it in a box to small

HotelEuphoria · 19/02/2018 23:22

That's cruel. It should be allowed to roam freely around your house without restriction. You can't keep a lovely spider in a plastic tank. If I was there I would release it, but I am the chief spider nurturer in my home.

MalcolmsBrokenWalrusMoneybox · 19/02/2018 23:59

Do they eat each other or only eat smaller spiders?
Just wondering on here (instead of googling) as this one time (not at band camp) I found 3 big ones in the bath. Dh joked that they'd sent a search party to look for the first one but I wonder if it was a bit of a stand off and they were contemplating eating each other.
Another time, I found one big one and one small one in the bath and thought I'd get them out after work. Except when I got back there was only the big one and a couple of legs.

JessieMcJessie · 20/02/2018 00:04

I had one of these, it was in my underwear drawer and ran down my back after climbing out of my bra, scared the bloody bejeezus out of me.

NNchangedforthis · 20/02/2018 00:11

Jessie what is the afterlife like? Cause I literally don't understand how that happened to you and you didn't die haha

JessieMcJessie · 20/02/2018 17:34

Ha ha loops it was touch and go!

QuackPorridgeBacon · 20/02/2018 22:42

I’m sat here itching like fuck. I’m sorry but I kill spiders. I can’t handle them roaming about, they really scare me. I hate when one gets lost in the bedroom when I’m about to get into bed, restless night. I only kill them if my partner is unavailable. I did like seeing a pet tarantula when I was a kid though. It’s the little ones that freak me out. I’m ok with mice though.

Marriedwithchildren5 · 20/02/2018 23:13

A farm!!?? You do realise if they break out they will most probably eat you all alive?? I'd personally drive the farm about 200 miles away and move in case they are homing spiders!!

gamerchick · 20/02/2018 23:16

March is spider season, all the horny big ladies are coming out to get laid... before they eat their dudes.

If you’re bothered, get some cellar spiders and stick them in the house. (Found in warehouses with a lot of woody stuff ime) and they’ll get eaten.

speakout · 20/02/2018 23:17

Yes be careful you don't get bitten.
They are not poisonous of course, but they can take a small chunk off the end of your finger- as I know to my cost..

Oysterbabe · 20/02/2018 23:18

I thought I knew what I was getting into clicking this thread but I wasn't ready for the concept of a spider farm.

gamerchick · 20/02/2018 23:20

All spiders are poisonous, they’re just too little to do us any damage in the U.K.

Yambabe · 20/02/2018 23:24

Looks like a standard giant house spider to me, and she's probably a she as females tend to be bigger than males.

Meandmy4 · 20/02/2018 23:24

MotherforkingShirtballs 😂😂

Spider farm 🤢🤢😵

LunchBoxPolice · 20/02/2018 23:25

I'd rather have a zombie in my house than a spider farm.

BlackeyedSusan · 20/02/2018 23:31

you need to get the fine thin ones that eat the big fat hairy ones.

lots of fine thin legged ones here. they are allowed to live in the hope they eat the big hairy ones. we have not had many big hairy ones at all recently, so heres hoping.

Dizzywizz · 21/02/2018 12:40

I thought September was spider season, not March??
