During half term/did during half term?

JumpingJetFlash · 19/02/2018 14:37

Not a teacher anymore but catching up with
marking, writing interim reports, planning for the upcoming half term and trying to actually see some friends that I’d no chance of seeing in term time took up every half term of the 15 years that I was

Theworldisfullofidiots · 19/02/2018 14:40

This is what I see teachers doing:
Marking, planning, assessing popping into school and doing displays, spending time with their families and going on holiday.

I'm a governor and before that I thought teaching was a relatively easy job, lots of holidays etc. Now I realise they work really long days and often into the weekend. And how hard it is being with kids all day.

Shadowboy · 19/02/2018 14:42

I’m a teacher but my kids only have childcare teem time. One is currently napping. The other is eating a banana cake we just got out the oven. I am having a cup of tea. I only work evenings during half term due to kids; so once they are asleep I’ll get the computer out.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 19/02/2018 14:42

H went with me to a wedding on the Saturday, then Sunday to Tuesday he went and did a winter walk in the Peak District, then Wednesday to Sunday he was planning/marking/doing head of dept work interspersed with housework/gardening

BlondeB83 · 19/02/2018 14:42

Cleaning my house! It’s a tip! Going into school tomorrow though before meeting a friend for coffee in the afternoon.

Flisspaps · 19/02/2018 14:43

My husband is parenting our children while I go to work.

sarararararah · 19/02/2018 14:43

I wrote my reports (we do them in Feb rather than the summer), I did some planning, I updated my maths books and marked off evidence against the interim framework (I’m in Y2 so have to gather evidence for SATs.) I spent some time with my own children, friends, family and husband! Why do you ask?

HerSymphonyAndSong · 19/02/2018 14:45

Unless the op is a teacher these threads always have an agenda

chickenowner · 19/02/2018 14:46

I've been catching up on the things I don't have time for during term time, so dentist appointment, haircut, seeing my parents, seeing my brother and his family, shopping, meeting friends for lunch, etc.

I work on a supply contract now so don't have lots of extra work to do, but when I did work full time I spent at least part of the half term holidays catching up on paperwork. I also used to spend one full day in school doing things like taking down and putting up classroom displays, sorting through resources, making any new resources needed for the next half term and generally getting as much as possible ready.

Also catching up on sleep! When I was a younger teacher I used to notice that the dark shadows under my eyes would disappear during the school holidays!

Collettegirl · 19/02/2018 14:47

Sara

Just being polite. I'm year 2 too, that is interesting that you do reports in Feb. Is that a full report? We do interim reports before Christmas and then full reports at the end of June.

DH is a teacher. Half term last week. He did reports, planning, marking on top of looking after a heavily pregnant abd hormonal me and our DS aged 2. He has gone bsvk to work for a rest!

FitBitFanClub · 19/02/2018 15:09

I went skiing. Was fab.

Piggywaspushed · 19/02/2018 15:11

collette think you should get this moved to staffroom! You have explained why you asked now but it seems an odd question to ask in AIBU.

I did very limited work : watched a film (teach the subject) and spent a couple of hours reading/ faffing about with a worksheet. Wrote a job application.

Didn't do any more than that and don't think I should ! Not into the current one-upmanship workload climate...

Butternutissquashed · 19/02/2018 15:15

Have been in school today, changing classroom round for new topic. Planning for said topic tomorrow and catching up on marking etc. Same on Wednesday and then having the last few days to do absolutely nothing!

FourEyesGood · 19/02/2018 15:20

First day of half term here - hooray! DCs and I have been to the local museum and park (got very excited about seeing a nuthatch and a goldcrest, among other birds). We have a few other things planned for the week, but nothing much. I need to do some planning and have 2 lots of Y10 essays to mark, but don’t intend to go into school or do masses of work.

My main aim this week is to watch loads of films. So far, I’ve seen three (all at home; I’m unlikely to get to the cinema, but if I do, I really want to see The Shape of Water).

BG2015 · 19/02/2018 15:23

I'm on half term this week. I'm currently in London until Thursday with my partner. My 2 older teenage sons are on holiday with their dad.

I plan on doing some assessment, planning, preparation on Friday for a few hours and also cleaning and ironing.

On Saturday we're walking in the Peak District and staying overnight in a country pub.

Sunday will be sorting bits out for the week ahead.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 19/02/2018 15:35

I don’t see what H is doing as oneupmanship. He really doesn’t have enough time during termtime. Added to his workload is the fact that he is also trying to get further ahead so that he is not having to work whilst on paternity leave in a few weeks’ time.

Piggywaspushed · 19/02/2018 15:46

I meant on threads like this and in conversation with teachers in general. It's a noticeable change in the last 10 years in teaching. The ;'how high shall we jump' idea. We just need to better learn how to stop and rest and say no.

But , yes, he absolutely must not work whilst on paternity leave! I have heard that a lot of men are guilt tripped !

Good luck with baby!

Tillyscoutsmum · 19/02/2018 16:03

DD and I have been to lunch and to watch him The Greatest Showman whilst DS has been to a "football holiday club".

I've done loads of washing. Have made arrangements to catch up with family and friends at various points. Have got optician and dental appointments.

I've brought no marking home. Do have a little bit of planning to do but will no doubt leave it until about 2pm on Sunday when I'll panic, reluctantly get out the laptop and berate myself for leaving it all to the last minute. Again Grin

ChocFudgeLover · 19/02/2018 16:03

Why do you want to know?

GrannyGrissle · 19/02/2018 16:14

I'm a teacher and i've just made a bonfire in the middle of my garden from all the prep/marking/reports i'm supposed to do this week and am dancing round it naked with my tits flapping in the wind and a dead sheeps head perched on top of my own. Feels goooooood... though the neighbours' net curtains are starting to twitch the boring bastards. Wouldn't know a good time if it bit them on the balls

gamerwidow · 19/02/2018 16:18

grannygrissle I hope DDs teachers are doing the same

deptfordgirl · 19/02/2018 16:18

I used to be in running revision sessions or coursework catch up sessions when I was a teacher. Definitely would try and take a day or two to catch up with friends and family I hadn't seen as well.

KeiraTwiceKnightley · 19/02/2018 16:23

Done some planning - about 2 hours. Have a further 8-10 hours worth of marking to get through. Aside from that, sleeping, walking, hanging out with my kids, Netflix and seeing friends. I've earned this holiday!

FizzgigFizzgog · 19/02/2018 16:33

I'm not a teacher, but my mum was for a long time. She would have spent her time planning, doing reports, going into school to take down/set up displays (which we used to help with!), marking work etc.

I remember a couple of years we actually went away on holiday without her (once for 1 week, once for 2) because she was just too busy.

I actually kind of miss helping her out with that stuff, I used to enjoy it! Grin
