Got given two different tablets on prescription just before Christmas for my periods. 4 weeks ago the gynaecologist gave me some codine for the pain to. I’ve had Surgery for my periods since then so the codines almost gone and I’m out of all the other tablets. I ran out just before the surgery but as it was a canceltion it came around quickly and I forgot to order some more. I’ve never had to order any more before so didn’t no what to do. Phoned the surgery this morning and they told me to phone the pharmacy and I could come pick it up pharmacy said I needed to fill out a form. Got the bus all the way to the doctors which I find so hard after having stitches in my tummy and I’ve just started my period 2 days ago so my endometriosis is killing me I was almost crying. I get there and they tell me I won’t be able to pick it up for 3 days I told them I was almost out and having to take less pain medication than I need. The receptionist said she could try speed it up and get it to me at the end of the day which is pointless as I can’t stay in town all day as in to much pain. I can’t even pick it up this week as I’m meant to be working if I feel better. I just want to cry no one can pick it up for me my mums been away for months and isn’t back for a while. My partner finishes work after they close. Sorry for the rant I no I’m probably being unreasonable just in pain over tired and grumpy.

Is it a repeat prescription? It still has to be signed off so they can't just give it out straightaway. Does your pharmacy have a delivery service? Otherwise is there anyone else who could collect it for you?

I hope you feel better soon Flowers

Our doctors is 48 hours notice, pharmacy 72 hours notice. I have a few times forgotten to put my prescription in, and have phoned them and said and I normally get 'Bloody Snowy, you are always the same!! I'll see what I can do, phone back at 4pm'. And it's always ready at 4pm to be picked up.

Problem is a Dr has to sign them off. If they all are with patients then there's nothing that can be done. You are lucky they offered this afternoon. As I know a lot of friends at different surgeries to mine, can not get same day repeats.
Do you pharmacy offer deliveries? Mine does, I only use it when unwell, but they deliver until closing time which is 6pm for us. Could that be an option? Sorry you are feeling so rough x

Flomy · 19/02/2018 14:05

Get them to fax it to a Tesco or Sainsburys pharmacy. They should be open til 22.00

Pickledonion24 · 19/02/2018 14:06

No they don’t deliver I get that they can’t give it out straight away. I’m just feeling so emotional having my mum Away and having surgery I’m only 23 I’m currently crying at home

I'm sorry you're feeling rough.
YABU you forgot to order them, given the huge amount of prescriptions an average GP has to get through I'm surprised you expected same day service.

RedHelenB · 19/02/2018 14:09

Only 23 is still an adult of 5 years. As others have pointed out supermarket pharmacies may be open later so that could be an option?

Chouetted · 19/02/2018 14:10

You can buy codeine over the counter in combination with ibuprofen or paracetamol. Ask the pharmacist if any of those would be suitable to take to tide you over?

Snowysky20009 · 19/02/2018 14:15

Get a taxi/uber this afternoon?

Flomy · 19/02/2018 14:18

You can get 8/500 instore £2.

Snowysky20009 · 19/02/2018 14:21

Ask on Facebook? Loads of times where I live someone will post they need a prescription picking up/ milk/ bread/ a parcel from the post office etc because they are unwell/ they're children are unwell etc. And people always offer, even if they aren't really good friends with someone. But then I do live in a small town, where people know each other/their families.......

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 19/02/2018 14:31

Sorry you're in such pain and this won't help now, but if you're going to need repeat prescriptions don't your surgery operate an online request option via their patient portal? Enquire at reception as you have to register specifically.

Bramble71 · 19/02/2018 14:33

You should be able to purchase co-codamol (paracetamol combined with a low dose codeine) over the counter at any pharmacy. Hopefully this will keep you going until you can get your prescribed medication.

I've learned the hard way, too, about ordering medication too late so I try to order mine at least a week before I run out. To have crippling pain to come surging back is awful, I know, and you have my sympathy.

Can you speak to your GP's receptionist and see if there is a local supermarket pharmacy which is open late (usually till at least 21:00 or so) and see if they can send it electronically to them? They might even have a delivery service or your partner could get them on their way home from work.

I suffer from very severe pain and find that trying deep breathing exercises, in through nose and out through mouth) can sometimes help calm me down a bit.

Sirzy · 19/02/2018 14:35

I can get why your frustrated but it’s not the dr or the pharmacy at fault. These things do take time and they are trying their best to get it done sooner to help you.

SluttyButty · 19/02/2018 14:39

You can buy paramol over the counter, you can only have three days worth but that could tide you over until you can pick up your prescription.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 19/02/2018 14:43

Most prescriptions can be sent electronically to a pharmacy (some painkillers can't if controlled drugs), ask your practice if they can send to a late night pharmacy for your DH to collect

Ninabean17 · 19/02/2018 14:45

I'm sorry you're in pain at the moment. A repeat normally takes three working days. Even if you go to a supermarket pharmacy, they can't give you the medication because the repeat still needs to be 'issued' by the surgery. Best thing to do is tied yourself over with some over the counter pain killers and (I say this in the nicest way possible) remember to put in your repeat about a week before you run out.

selftitledalbum · 19/02/2018 14:48

You’re ‘only 23’. You’re an adult.
Buy something over the counter and stop acting so helpless.

crunchymint · 19/02/2018 14:57

Unless you are rural, which it does not sound like, everywhere has one late night pharmacy open, usually till at least 10pm. Ask your GP to send it to them and your DP can pick it up this evening. Or buy 3 days worth over the counter until your prescription can be picked up.

Blackteadrinker77 · 19/02/2018 14:59

The hospital should have given you a few days worth of pain killers when you were discharged.

How long ago was the surgery?

2rebecca · 19/02/2018 15:06

If you've only just started them they're probably not on a repeat prescription yet and medication that the GP hasn't authorised as a repeat takes longer and often needs an appointment to discuss it. Agree that ibuprofen and low dose co-codamol can be got from a pharmacy.

ViceAdmiralAmilynHoldo · 19/02/2018 15:10

I think that sounds crap, OP, and I'm sorry you are in so much pain.

At my surgery if someone like you walked in, who'd just had surgery - and who asked the receptionists very very nicely - they would pop in a note to the duty GP in between patients, and you'd have a prescription in no time. The receptionist would tell you how to register for on-line repeat requests so you'd know what to do in the future.

They appreciate that they are in the business of caring for patients. They also realise that ill people, especially people who've just been in hospital, are sometimes a bit confused about ordering their medication.

CQC rated them an outstanding surgery as do something like 98% of their patients. It can be done.

Pickledonion24 · 19/02/2018 15:15

Can’t take over the counter didn’t touch the sides with the pain I usually pass out from it or am sick I have to take strong codine with out paracetamol x

OP posts:
bigknickersbigknockers · 19/02/2018 15:21

I agree with Vice... If I were you I would be asking the receptionist for an appointment with any of the GPs so they can give you a prescription for what you need .

LemonShark · 19/02/2018 15:35

Paracetamol and ibuprofen both make you pass out and/or vomit?

mirime · 19/02/2018 15:38

You can buy ibuprofen with 12.5mg of codeine, better than the 8/500 for co-codamol. You can of course take both paracetamol and ibuprofen just stagger them. Don't know what you normally take, but that's probably the best you can do OTC.

I do think some people are being a bit harsh here, we all forget things sometimes, and with surgery coming up the OP no doubt had distractions. Being in pain is not nice so lets be a bit more sympathetic.
