To think they should abolish Sunday trading hours/ laws?

So I've just realised that I am out of pop socks for work, not a major disaster but something I would normally think 'oh I'll pop down to Asda and grab a new box' only its now nearly 6pm on a Sunday and all the shows are now shut.
I get that Sunday's are precious and all that jazz but in this modern day of 24 hour supermarkets and shift working etc etc is it not time we thought about the fact that come 4pm on a Sunday if you haven't bought what you need, you need to wait until tomorrow. Yes I could probably be more organised etc
Am i in a minority and therefore being unreasonable??

I have been screamed at by people because a delivery with their parcel on it hasn't arrived on Sunday. It puzzles me that they get so livid but can't muster up enough rage to try and do something about NHS understaffing at weekends.

And, for the record, if you tell us you need it kept on, we'll hold your parcel til you can make it. On demand culture creates brats out of adults.

Tink2007 · 18/02/2018 22:48

I would quite like things to go back to how they were when I was a kid - no Sunday trading.

My DH is a manager and has to be in on Sundays and most Saturdays so he misses out on family time with our DDs on the weekends.

Eggzandbacon · 18/02/2018 22:59

We have a friend who works repairing railway lines. He was going to work at 6pm tonight, he works most Sundays - it's their busiest time. It's not just bus replacements that get railway lines repaired but the fact the lines are much quieter and there is longer between trains.

So we go full 7 days a week trading all the time - so transport needs to be the same.
When are the train lines to be repaired?

Sunday shopping is a nightmare, you have to rush to get finished in time, fruit and veg shelves are half empty as they dont restock them, and then at 4 pm everyone rushes to the tills at the same time and everyone is driving home at the same time so there is always traffic jams. Hardly what I would call family time.

Just let people have whatever day off a week they want and stop trying to force everyone to conform to the regime of some people.

Why should the Scottish people have the right to shop late on Sundays but they are allowed to ban English people from doing so. We need to have a vote of just the English and Welsh MPs.

MadRainbow · 18/02/2018 23:06

Personally wish they'd shut completely on a Sunday, I really miss a Sunday roast with my family. Or allow shift workers an 'opt in' situation instead of automatically scheduling someone.

Sadly it's only retail that works on the Sunday, offices and warehouses all seem to shut and it makes retail workers feel very put out

RunYouJuiceBitch · 18/02/2018 23:13

I've been hoping they'll be abolished for years now.

If anyone wants a day of rest on Sunday, they are under absolutely no obligation to go to the supermarket at 7pm. Stop enforcing it on the rest of us, many of whom work at weekends and appreciate being able to get to the supermarket after our shifts.

RunYouJuiceBitch · 18/02/2018 23:14

There are plenty of us providing services to the public at weekends besides retail workers.

ForalltheSaints · 19/02/2018 06:55

Aside from the time off together for as many people as possible, the current Sunday trading laws give some hope for small shops and High Streets. The death of them would hit those on low incomes and those who do not drive the most.

Fewer car journeys on Sunday helps air quality a bit too.

Quickerthanavicar · 19/02/2018 06:58

I think they should stay. Shopworkers deserve time off. Be more organised OP.

AuntieStella · 19/02/2018 07:01

I like Sundays being different.

I don't want a homogenised week.

And I think it's quite important for smaller smaller shops.

I wouldn't turn the clock back to my childhood though - where only the newsagents was open and then only until 11ish. I think we have got too used to greater accessibility to shops on Sundays.

RebootYourEngine · 19/02/2018 07:06

Sunday is just another day to me.

I have a relative who works in a supermarket on a sunday and they still manage to have family time at weekends.

I have worked retail in scotland and also still managed to have family time at the weekend.

Dont know why people make a fuss about sundays

SersioulycanitgetWORSE · 19/02/2018 08:08

Yes definitely. I hate dead Sundays. Squashing everything into a Saturday

I agree, so outdated for everything to grind to a halt on what is now a normal and non-religious day for most people in the UK.

There is already a 7 day NHS.
It just means you don't get everything on any day of the week.

Justwanttosayplease · 19/02/2018 21:37

But that would interfere with 'half day closing' in my town. If someone worked Sunday and had 'half-day closing day' off in lieu they would only gain half a day for working a whole day.

Dontsweathesmallstuff · 19/02/2018 21:48

Sunday's should go back to essential work only in my opinion, to allow families and friends at least one day a week they know they can spend valuable time together regrouping for the following week.
Exactly.

no need to hold the rest of the country hostage.
Seriously! over dramatic much? Hmm
People used to manage just fine when most shops were shut on Sunday. Can people really not wait for one day to get stuff they were too disorganised to sort out. No of course not, with this "me, me, me, now now now, i must have what i want and right now" mentality.

meandmytinfoilhat · 19/02/2018 21:51

No restrictions to hours in Scotland.

AlonsosLeftPinky · 19/02/2018 22:29

It's nothing to do with family time for me.

I just really really like it in other countries where shops are closed on a Sunday. Its quiet, serene and people seem to get out in the fresh air and actually do things which don't centre around consumerism.

SnackMaBitchUp · 19/02/2018 22:37

I agree, yesterday we were heading back from a family day out only to realise that we were out of bread (for today's lunches) A quick google told me that the big supermarkets shut at 4.30 but that the Sainsburys locals shut at 11pm! I did not know this but it made me wonder what the difference was and why can't big shops stay open nowadays? It was basically down to religious days that Sunday opening exists and that just doesn't stand up now.

worridmum · 20/02/2018 09:44

If sunday and saturday are normal week days i am sure you would not mind if your office 9 to 5 job also included weekend work you as they are just normal days right?

Nikephorus · 20/02/2018 09:46

Close all the shops on Sundays. Miles better.

biscuiteater · 20/02/2018 10:07

Shops used to shut on a Sunday including petrol stations. Careful planning was needed if you had any long journeys to make. However mostly everyone managed fine with a day of everything being shut and it all seemed more relaxed too. A bit like Christmas or Good Friday really. It wouldn't worry me if we went back to that as I do think we have gone too much the other way and life seems more hectic. It's good to take time out, spend it with family or some quiet time away from hustle and bustle.

scaryteacher · 20/02/2018 10:26

I live in Belgium where the shops shut on a Sunday, and many in the smaller towns will also be shut on a Monday as they were open on Saturday.

The world doesn't end, and there is usually a corner shop open for milk, and one of the bakers for bread, or you go to the broodautomat to get bread ( bread vending machine).
