To wonder why anyone uses "spreads" instead of butter?

They're awful! So fake and plastic-ish. Hasn't it been proved that butter's better for you?

Do you use spread? Why?

Grim. We had to give a new breakfast cafe near our house a swerve because inexplicably, they use this stuff. It's the colour of play-doh.

murphys · 19/02/2018 11:00

Firstly, its because its so bloody expensive now, well here in SA it is anyway. I can get a kg of meat for the same price as a block of butter.

Secondly, as like now, its so bloody hot and it just melts if you take it out the fridge, then it could be used as a weapon if you leave it in the fridge (my fridge setting is on 3 degrees in summer)
Thirdly, ds is the only one in the house that eats bread, dd and I are wheat intolerant. What teenager cares what spread goes under the peanut butter or Marmite, or layers of cheese.

ToadOfSadness · 19/02/2018 11:47

I used to buy Olivio because butter would be too hard from the fridge. Not a problem with spreadable butter which wasn't really around before, apart from revolting tasting stuff.

However now that most spreads contain palm oil I have pretty much just given up buying both because a lot of butter seem to have a high water content which I discover when I melt it for cooking.

I read all the tubs in the supermarket and not one spread was without palm oil, that stuff is not healthy.

So I buy President in the little tub or Lurpack but very little these days.

Read the ingredients list, then decide if it is as good as you think it is.

Redpony1 · 19/02/2018 12:10

I don't like the taste of butter, or lurpak, it's so strong!

mollied · 19/02/2018 12:14

It is always Butter for our family and we wouldn't change ever, even when some people get a bit angry about it not spreading it tastes so much better and I am pretty sure it is better for you as well.

Bramble71 · 19/02/2018 12:15

Simple. I don't like the taste of butter. I also find it upsets my tummy.

janinlondon · 19/02/2018 12:21

Someone show me the original paper (not a press report) that says butter is a healthy food option in reduction of risk of heart disease. Please.

Gwenhwyfar · 19/02/2018 13:16

Margarine. Butter too much hassle to leave it out to soften etc.

DreamyMcDreamy · 19/02/2018 13:28

To wonder why anyone uses "spreads" instead of butter?

  • because it's thick and claggy, and people tend to slather it on when making sandwiches so all you can taste is ruddy butter. Might as well just make a butter sandwich and forget the filling.

  • however long you leave it out of the fridge, even overnight, it's absolutely impossible to spread without ripping your bread to shreds or leaving globs of the stuff unevenly distributed. Blee.

ToadOfSadness
What is unhealthy about palm oil? It is high in saturated fat - just like butter! There are environmental concerns about the impact of palm oil farming, but don't demonise palm oil itself. It is an important part of the diet in some areas of the world with a low incidence of cardiovascular disease. If you're following a low-fat diet I can see why you'd avoid it, but butter isn't any better.

wendz86 · 19/02/2018 13:41

I don't like the taste of butter. I'm not a milk fan and it tastes too creamy.

jaimelannistersgoldenhand · 19/02/2018 13:44

Stork is better than butter for baking and because of allergies, I buy one of the dairy-free spreads like Pure for the little butter we use elsewhere.

RainbowDash09 · 19/02/2018 13:48

Butter is too strong for me too, makes me gag!

fleshmarketclose · 19/02/2018 13:48

I use butter all the time as well although I buy stork for baking mainly because I bake a lot and the cakes seem lighter.
I'd rather pay a little bit more for butter than save pennies and eat spread tbh.

GUMBYMUMBY · 19/02/2018 13:50

I use Lurpak light with Olive oil, a Lighter one. I like the pure margarine and a bit of butter for baking, makes very light cakes.

StickStickStickStick · 19/02/2018 14:00

Spreadable butter and butter spreads aren't butter!!! They've got things added to make the margarine like

So yes they're the things I don't like and think of as plastic fake shit (to me!)

Strokethefurrywall · 19/02/2018 14:00

I only use Kerrygold or a spreadable butter for the kids sandwiches here.

But I eat a high fat, low carb diet so everything is cooked in butter or olive oil. Kids eat what they want but I don't use margarine and haven't for about a decade, because to me, butter tastes far better.

RatherBeRiding · 19/02/2018 14:04

I use Aldi olive spread. Because I like it. Or any other olive spread from any other supermarket. Because I like it.

No need to be snotty with those of us that prefer butter alternatives. Not entirely sure what's "fake" or "plastic" about them?

StickStickStickStick · 19/02/2018 14:08

Only in the sense we call the square white bread "plastic bread". May be it's just our family that use that terminology. Wouldnt judge anyone for using anything they like just find it amusing people sayong "oh i only eat butter" followes by it being "spreadable butter" which isnt a butter its a spread.

OhGood · 19/02/2018 14:10

Butter since we had the DC because it seems less processed and therefore healthier.

I have no evidence to support this :)

I do have significant evidence that the deliciousness of butter on hot toast will, over 7 years, contribute to one getting fatter.

ShotsFired · 19/02/2018 14:11

Well now I might use more "spreads" just to piss off such a snooty up herself OP! Grin

DullAndOld · 19/02/2018 14:13

I have lactose intolerance and find that my digestion is more upset by 'spreads' than by butter...weird eh?

AgnesBrownsCat · 19/02/2018 14:17

Butter is £4 a lb here . It’s expensive but nothing tastes as good as real butter . If it’s on offer for £3 or thereabouts I buy about 6 lbs.

AgnesBrownsCat · 19/02/2018 14:18

Spreads are artificial so of course will be cheaper . I can understand why people use them though esp for sandwiches when the filling provides the flavour .

biscuiteater · 19/02/2018 14:25

I use bertolli for bread and butter for cakes. I always thought the opposite OP that the spreads are healthier than butter. Margarine was found to be bad but the current spreads are not margarine and reduce cholesterol due to lower fat content.
