To wonder why anyone uses "spreads" instead of butter?

They're awful! So fake and plastic-ish. Hasn't it been proved that butter's better for you?

Do you use spread? Why?

onlyold, yes, if they have cream in them! Victoria sponge with fresh cream is yummy!

bertsdinner · 18/02/2018 13:03

I use both. I like Clover Light as its lower calorie and I like the taste. I use it for everyday stuff, sandwiches etc.
I do prefer butter though and buy it frequently. I like it on crumpets or crackers/crusty bread.

SluttyButty · 18/02/2018 13:11

Cholesterol levels meant we swapped from butter to spread. They’d been artificially raised by a drug but we still wanted to do everything we could to help reduce them. We have Bertolli now but I really miss the taste of a good quality butter Grin And the coat of butter is ridiculous now.

VileyRose · 18/02/2018 13:13

I use a spread.

Luxanna · 18/02/2018 13:43

I use Aldi valley spreadable butter. I'd rather use pure butter because it's more natural but I just can't handle the taste. It's too strong a flavour for one. I barely eat sweetened foods these days and that's caused my taste buds to change which leads to things like milk and plain yogurt tasting sweet, so butter on bread (especially on a brioche burger bun/bread roll) can taste like a cream bun to me. Meat on a cream bun is not a flavour I enjoy, pastrami being the worst.

I can't eat most "spreads" at all though because they taste and smell like used chip oil to me and make me want to throw up so I can see why you ask the question.

DH will eat any and all of it. He's a low sense of taste freak though like a lot of males.

ThePinkOcelot · 18/02/2018 13:57

I use spreads, because guess what? I like it.

BeesAndChiscuits · 18/02/2018 13:59

Advertising. Lots of lobbying over the years to convince people that oils and water and emulsifier with a bit of yellow colouring in are healthier than butter.

expatinscotland · 18/02/2018 14:02

I'm lactose intolerant. I use Flora vegan. Lots of people can't use butter for this reason Hmm.

Kursk · 18/02/2018 14:02

I find it cheaper to make butter, full fat milk in the food mixer for 10 mins job done.

OhPuddleducks · 18/02/2018 14:05

DS is dairy intolerant (and butter is bloody expensive)

AjasLipstick · 18/02/2018 14:06

Kursk how does one go about that!?

I use olive oil spread. Because I like it more than butter.

Butter is overpowering. the only thing you can taste is butter.

wowfudge · 18/02/2018 14:13

DP likes margarine/spread, I would rather have butter. The only added ingredient in butter is a bit of salt, or nothing at all if it's unsalted. The crap in other spreads is not something I want to eat.

Mrsramsayscat · 18/02/2018 22:00

We have butter in the fridge but don't use it often. I use neither butter nor spread , for medical reasons (gallstones). I might use peanut butter as an alternative on occasion.

OutyMcOutface · 18/02/2018 22:01

I use it in Australia because it is too hot to leavebitter out.

Kursk · 19/02/2018 01:43

If you buy double cream then mix it as if you are making whipped cream, then keep mixing for a few minutes and it turns to butter. Strain off the buttercream, that’s it.

Takes about 10 mins

MistressDeeCee · 19/02/2018 08:49

Why would you wonder about that? Butter block store brand is £1.80 in my local supermarket, not that long ago it was 85p. You can imagine how expensive bigger brand names are noe. I don't know how it's not possible to grasp that some people have less money than others and that drives their food choices.

It's all a bit working class snob isn't it...

madeyemoodysmum · 19/02/2018 08:58

Marg or spread is extremely bad for you.
If it contains hydrogenated oils they cause all sorts of health issues.

Bin them now.

Butter and sugar for me.

TheHeartOfTeFiti · 19/02/2018 09:01

Vegan & dairy intolerance! Used to love butter now it smells awful!

badgermushroom · 19/02/2018 09:05

My DH bought home a spreadable Lurpack rip-off from Aldi called 'Norpack'. That was a dark day.

DenPerry · 19/02/2018 10:38

I grew up on Vitalite thinking that was normal, then as an adult tried butter for the first time... I'll never get a spread again.

DenPerry · 19/02/2018 10:40

Hmm maybe I misunderstood.. I meant I hate margarine but love clover and lurpack butter spreads. So they are spreads... but not the plastic margarine shite Grin

Jaygee61 · 19/02/2018 10:53

I use an olive oil spread. It tastes fine to me. I've never found the taste of butter to be anything to write home about.

meredintofpandiculation · 19/02/2018 10:55

grew up on margarine (Flora). I think it was a combination of budget and thoughts about what was healthier in my mum's opinion. Not your mum's opinion, if was official advice for a great many years that you should reduced fat in your diet and replace butter by low fat spreads. When you've lived with that advice for decades, it's hard to do the brain shift to go back to butter, no matter how nice it is.

I still find it hard to use eggs with abandon - for most of my adult life the advice was "not more than 2 eggs a week"
