To wonder why anyone uses "spreads" instead of butter?

They're awful! So fake and plastic-ish. Hasn't it been proved that butter's better for you?

Do you use spread? Why?

3/5 members of our family have CMPA so we used to buy Vitalite. We don’t bother any more as we just don’t use any kind of spread - instead we have ham on toast, olive oil for cooking and so on.

Shimmershimmerandshine · 18/02/2018 07:47

Butter does not need keeping in the fridge, apart from in the middle of summer, it definitely does not go 'rancid'. MIL always puts my butter in the fridge and it drives me spare as then it won't spread.

Tbh I am a different level of weird anyway as I don't really like either butter or spread on sandwiches. I only have it on toast, potatoes etc.

sausagedogsmakechipolatas · 18/02/2018 07:47

Jam! Not ham Grin

cueominousmusic · 18/02/2018 07:48

Notanotheruser: "In Aus butter has gone up in price as well and it’s horrendously expensive for people on a budget"

I was just doing an on-line shopping list with Coles, and their home brand Australian butter ( I presume no additives) is $5.15 for 500 gm. I know that that would last two of us at least three weeks - except I don't use butter, and am going by usage of a comparable spread.

Shimmershimmerandshine · 18/02/2018 07:49

Hahaha sausage I thought that was a bit strange. I think that jam on toast is much nicer on its own, I have no idea why people put butter/ spread on as well.

implantsandaDyson · 18/02/2018 07:53

I don't like the taste or texture of butter. I spread very little of the spreads on sandwiches/toast and it does me fine. I also have a horrible childhood memory of butter just left out in my granny's and it was rancid, it really turned me. I don't bake so have no need to have butter.

Laurel543 · 18/02/2018 07:53

Obligatory animal welfare response Grin
I avoid butter because of the way it is obtained. Cows made pregnant every year. Every single calf they have is taken away at birth, or a few days after which is, undeniably, a hugely distressing event for an intelligent mammal. Male calves killed early. The whole thing is pretty brutal really. Butter tastes amazing but, to me, not amazing enough to justify the suffering involved.
You're welcome Wink

wejammin · 18/02/2018 07:57

Oohhh I love the taste of proper, full fat, salty butter.

But, I'm vegan so not eaten it in years. We buy Pure or vitalite.

MrsExpo · 18/02/2018 07:58

For me it’s a matter of habit and convenience. I agree butter does taste a bit better, but not so much so as to make the cost and inconvenience of pure butter worth it. I’m another who wouldn’t leave it just standing on the work top for days on end: perishable foods live in the fridge (I would include things like ketchup, jam and cheese in that category too).

thatwhichwecallarose · 18/02/2018 07:59

Oh I do love a good mumsnet thread where the OP can’t come up with a single reason why everyone doesn’t act the same way they do!!

Hope you’ve been enlightened!

CrabappleBiscuit · 18/02/2018 07:59

I’ve always hated the taste of margarine. I buy local butter and it tastes lovely. It’s kept in a butter dish by the fridge and spreads ok ...

afreshnewname · 18/02/2018 08:01

We grew up on spread, all that hype about it being healthier, butter all the way now, kept out of the fridge in a little butter dish

LadyPenelope68 · 18/02/2018 08:03

“Tbh I am a different level of weird anyway as I don't really like either butter or spread on sandwiches. I only have it on toast, potatoes etc.”
shimmershimmerandshine I’m the same weird as you!! Can’t stand butter/spread in sandwiches.

Hastalapasta · 18/02/2018 08:07

Lovely local butter here, I keep a slice in the butter dish and the rest in the fridge, keeps better.
Use spread for baking. Except for cookies, they require a pack of butter, melted, to create chocolatey goeyness....

topcat2014 · 18/02/2018 08:07

We use Aldi olive spread - happy with the taste and spreads easily.

Mind you, I don't spend too much time worrying about food - it's just fuel to me.

DeadButDelicious · 18/02/2018 08:07

I try to avoid as much dairy as I can (it's a work in progress) so I use Pure or vitalite. The treatment of dairy cows really doesn't sit well with me.

HotelEuphoria · 18/02/2018 08:08

We use butter. Four adults who use very little, don't eat it on most sandwiches, perhaps a few slices of toast or crumpets a week and the odd baked spud or mash.

On that basis I would still buy it, even if it were a fiver.

charlestonchaplin · 18/02/2018 08:15

When you need to look down on other people to feel good about yourself, you're in a bad place. Other people using 'plastic-ish' spreads doesn't affect you, and we aren't stupid enough to think you actually care about their welfare.

WilburIsSomePig · 18/02/2018 08:15

People may use spreads because, erm, they prefer them?

I use butter because I like it. It has never crossed my mind to criticise someone else's choice of what holds their sandwich together.

Nousernameforme · 18/02/2018 08:15

We can't have butter in the house as it destroys all my will power. Then I'm baking bread just to spread the butter so thick it leaves teeth marks with a good strawberry jam. So they have flora and I can resist.

Fitzsimmons · 18/02/2018 08:17

Because my kitchen is freezing all year round so it's never spreadable.

spanieleyes · 18/02/2018 08:20

Can't stand the taste of butter. Growing up, Mum and I ate margarine, Dad and Sister had butter-we still do to this day!
Butter icing in cake is bleugh too! Cake

orangesticker · 18/02/2018 08:23

Ds and I are dairy free - I avoid marg when ever I can, I use nothing, mayo, avocado but ds still likes it. I miss butter!

Earlyup · 18/02/2018 08:30

I didn't like butter as a child (although the taste I remember isn't what I taste now) so grew up on margarine and happy with that in sandwiches/ under Marmite.

I'll save butter now for proper nice toast although OH will always have it in preference.

DialsMavis · 18/02/2018 08:35

I don't eat dairy but butter is the one thing I miss...beautiful butter. Waitrose Avocado oil spread is O.K but it just means I now eat less bready stuff as it was mainly jyst a vehicle to get the butter into my body
