Thank you.

How stupid are some people that they wouldn't realise that having mistakes pointed out to you by people who have nothing better to do than mock, would be hurtful?

If people want help with language and literacy, they will ask for it. They don't need to have their chat on a chatboard monitored and heckled at by a gang of silly, pointless twats with nothing better to do. Capish?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 17/02/2018 13:00

We need a new board for these threads (NOT Pedants' Corner) - a new and far away board for those who wet themselves at SPAG errors and the thought of correcting people who haven't asked... how about calling it, "The Echo Chamber"?

Has a nice ring to it, I think.

GunnyHighway · 17/02/2018 13:01

Oh, so you're going to try and upset me to make a point? Seems equally twattish doesn't it?

And no-one is being picked on directly are they. OP pointed out a common mistake. They haven't been crayoning all over serious threads have they?

ShowOfHands · 17/02/2018 13:07

I like to know if I've made a mistake. I assume that people who type ect don't know they're making a mistake. Is there no place for pointing it out kindly? Those people who are able and happy to discuss/engage/learn can do so and otherwise, you can just ignore the thread.

Probably not in AIBU though. AIBU is a fight club.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 17/02/2018 13:09

Any time that a thread like this gets posted, there will be posters who point out to the mockers that they are being twats. Every time. HTH

More than that, I don't want to engage. If you don't see it then you don't see it. I don't care.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 17/02/2018 13:11

ShowOfHands, so when you start a thread then, you can perhaps make a point of saying, 'corrections welcome', maybe? That way posters can correct you and nobody will mind.

As far as ignoring a thread goes, that door swings both ways. The correctors can equally backspace out and save their poor eyes, can't they?

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 17/02/2018 13:16

Lying if you suggest an echo chamber topic on site stuff I'll come over and vote for that. I agree these threads are becoming painful. The insistence each time that other adults should be grateful for the opportunity to improve themselves because some sneery fuck more knowledgeable poster on MN saw fit to correct them is just laughable. These threads say a lot more about them than about any of the posters they think they're superior to.

Shadow666 · 17/02/2018 13:18

But etc is an abbreviation, so surely it should be etc. not etc without a full stop. 🤔

ShowOfHands · 17/02/2018 13:21

You simply can't start policing thread topics. Personal attacks yes. Unkindness yes. Pointing out a grammatical or spelling error in a generic fashion is not something worthy of reporting or banning.

There are a hundred threads a week that I think can be construed as unkind and unnecessary. Threads about other people's clothes or lifestyles or names or ages or looks or abilities or political leanings are ten a penny. And often critical or sneering or patronising. It's not up to me to police it. Not when some people like it. This thread is no different. Behind it is a benign idea. Sadly, individuals you cannot account for.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 17/02/2018 13:21

Will do, CantSleep. There really isn't a kind or gentle way to correct the way that somebody writes. If they haven't asked for the help then none should be offered, not if Mumsnet is going to be inclusive to all.

In any case, the corrections are always done in a snidey, jocular manner with a team of performing sycophants in attendance with another list of examples. It's not good.

Gide · 17/02/2018 13:27

So what! All this thread shows op is your own insecurities. Nobody with good self esteem would feel the need to post such a smart arse thing.

Rubbish. The point of the thread is that it’s fucking annoying and people should learn some basics. Why do some posters continually defend errors and shout about how anyone who points out errors has insecurities? Utter nonsense. Do you take the U Ok Hun website seriously?

P.S. My self esteem is fine.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 17/02/2018 13:28

I don't like those threads either, ShowOfHands and I say so on the thread if there's something that perturbs me.

I don't particularly ignore SPAG errors, they give me a little jolt perhaps - and I say NOT A WORD about them because nobody's asked. I would have thought it obvious that you'd (general) be capturing great swathes of posters with petty 'corrections', but obviously not. It's just rude.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 17/02/2018 13:31

We really don't indulge in such smug twattery on PC. Or, we didn't use to, but recently there has been an influx of "hee haw hee haw aren't people thick" threads which is rather lowering the tone.

I see neither the OP or many of those who agree with her have the same strong feelings about punctuation or correct sentence structure. Arguably more important than a typo.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 17/02/2018 13:33

Perfume, I quite like Pedants' Corner and I agree with AuntieStella that these threads don't' belong there. That was my earlier mistake last week and I'm sorry about that.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 17/02/2018 13:41

It's OK, lying. I know you're a good 'un on this topic.

What is funny is that I've been through the thread, and every single poster agreeing with the OP (and the OP herself) has made at least one mistake in their SPAG. Many of which are quite basic and pretty bad. One poster has a sentence which is virtually incomprehensible yet she berates other people and considers it a public duty to belittle. Maybe I should rewrite her posts as my public duty?

ForagingForFaerieGold · 17/02/2018 13:45

I used to be a terrible grammar nazi. I'm less bothered now for some reason, not sure why. But I am constantly amazed at the amount of people across the internet who are so "defiant" definite about everything . Just calm down eh.

Speiling miftakes are a prat of leif Grin

VladmirsPoutine · 17/02/2018 13:45

Here we go.

NerrSnerr · 17/02/2018 13:46

I think defiant vs definite is an autocorrect issue usually.

ForagingForFaerieGold · 17/02/2018 13:52

I think defiant vs definite is an autocorrect issue usually

Possibly. But as often as I see it, I'm doubtful. I also see a myriad of different weird spellings of it. Many of which aren't actually words at all. It seems to be a difficult one for some reason.

As I said though, I'm over it. Just makes me smile.

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 17/02/2018 13:56

Yabu for not speaking Latin.

GunnyHighway · 17/02/2018 13:56

Please feel free to correct my english. I welcome it.

DoJo · 17/02/2018 13:58

If typing quickly on your phone were a reasonable excuse, everybody would be making these mistakes, but that's not the case.

Your logic is flawed - plenty of people use computers with proper keyboards and no autocorrect.

It really, really slows up my comprehension of what you've written... So much so, that I often cba to read to end of the message. ..

Either you are exaggerating, or you presumably suffer some similar problems to those who are bemoaning in which case you aren't obliged to keep reading and I'm sure most posters would be happy for you to skip over their threads.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 17/02/2018 13:59

English, with a capital E.

NotACleverName · 17/02/2018 14:02

@CantSleepClownsWillEatMe, I've taken your suggestion and started a thread on 'Site Stuff'. :)
