Sick to death with spelling and grammar police correcting adult's use of etymology

That word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Bananagrabber · 17/02/2018 10:56

Yanbu, I have wanted to type this about twice a day...

falsepriest · 17/02/2018 10:59

What pacifically annoys u bout it?

PaperdollCartoon · 17/02/2018 11:00

I am a terrible pedant (inside my own head) and I’ve never seen ect.

lurkingnotlurking · 17/02/2018 11:03

You're going to see it everywhere now. Unless my awareness-raising has worked ;)

Dahlietta · 17/02/2018 11:05

YANBU.
I see it everywhere.

Nanny0gg · 17/02/2018 11:05

Totally agree. God knows why people do this - it's really irritating.

Because people say excetera, they know the abbreviation has an e t and a c in it and they think it sounds right to type ect.

Grates on me too...

GunnyHighway · 17/02/2018 11:06

What pacifically annoys u bout it?

IT'S A TRAP!!!!!

5plusMeAndHim · 17/02/2018 11:08

So what! All this thread shows op is your own insecurities. Nobody with good self esteem would feel the need to post such a smart arse thing.
Here is an idea, how about engaging with debates in a thoughtful way? Not as easy to put yourself out there is it? Easier to criticise typos than construct meaningful argument

Eolian · 17/02/2018 11:09

YANBU. I would never correct an individual adult's use of grammar or punctuation, because that would be rude. But I will happily bemoan general levels of inaccuracy. So many people falsely blame their phone/autocorrect/fat fingers/ the terrible necessity for speedy typing. If typing quickly on your phone were a reasonable excuse, everybody would be making these mistakes, but that's not the case. Barring dyslexia, the real reason is that people don't know what's correct and don't care enough to check.

Et cetera is frequently misspelled because people also pronounce it incorrectly as ECK cetera.

HotCrossBunFight · 17/02/2018 11:13

I'll often use the wrong form other there/their/they're because I'm typing too fast. I know the rules. It bugs me when I read it back.

NerrSnerr · 17/02/2018 11:24

I imagine it’s sometimes autocorrect, sometimes typing fast and sometimes someone not being very good at spelling and grammar for whatever reason.

The more threads picking at things like this will probably lead to people who struggle with spelling and grammar not asking for help on here because of the risk of getting their post pulled apart.

lurkingnotlurking · 17/02/2018 11:38

5plusmeandhim I'm just aiming for a bit of awareness-raising

AuntieStella · 17/02/2018 11:41

Please DO NOT send 'grammar police' to Pedants' Corner.

It's a nice place, where people who love the English language chat about it. We don't want shitty posters who pick on people any more than any other topic does.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 17/02/2018 11:43

AuntieStella, I'm sorry, I did report this and ask for it to go to Pedants' Corner but I take your point. PC is a nice board and this shitty post has no place there. I hope MNHQ just deletes this thread.

lurking, I expect you fondly imagine that people will take notice of you. Bless. Hmm

handyforpicnics · 17/02/2018 11:46

If the majority of people who can read and write didn't care about correct usage we would have no common language with which to communicate. Those who whine about grammar police must count themselves lucky that we can guess the meaning of read their posts.

sixteenapples · 17/02/2018 11:47

So people are not allowed to mention how someone uses the wwritten language - unless it is somethign YOU want written or expressed in a certain way.

So we are not allowed to comment on execrable grammar which obscures the meaning but use a word that is suddenly considered "offensive", (since last week), or spell your name Amelia instead of Amelea and we are considered stupid, rude, ignorant, lazy. (Words taken from current thread on this subject!)

Lanhguage is a means to communicate - and that is two way.

Whatshallidonowpeople · 17/02/2018 11:48

Why shouldn't adults be corrected? Don't you want opportunities to improve and look less like uneducated fools?

sixteenapples · 17/02/2018 11:48

ps - post full of typos as you would expect!

NerrSnerr · 17/02/2018 11:48

@handyforpicnics Is it really that difficult to understand if someone puts ect instead of etc? Do you honestly have to guess what they mean?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 17/02/2018 11:49

Oh the goady what is back. Pathetic!

hackmum · 17/02/2018 11:50

It's annoying because it's wrong but it's also funny because it reminds me of Molesworth.

sixteenapples · 17/02/2018 11:50

false - Grin

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 17/02/2018 11:51

I've reported this thread anyway, it adds nothing of use or interest. Has potential to hurt though, which is what the goady no-mates want.

GunnyHighway · 17/02/2018 12:49

Correcting people is hurtful? How sensitive are people that pointing out mistakes can be upsetting?
