Email from work saying that our reports should be in font 11 as font 12 uses more paper.

I doubt this is an environmental concern. We've already been told to go easy on the biros.

They're removing the sani bins at my work. We have to 'make our own arrangements' as of Monday.

May I suggest the office bin of whichever beancounter decided that?

Its also illegal. www.initial.co.uk/blog/company-provide-sanitary-bins/

I would contact the water company that supplies your office and tip hem off because they will be VERY unhappy about this.

OfDragonsDeep · 16/02/2018 12:54

My work charges 50p for a sausage from the canteen. If you ask for a sausage sandwich, they take 3 sausages from the canteen tray, add bread, butter and sauce and charge.... £1.35.

They are paying us to eat their sausage sandwiches Grin

GrumpyOldBagFace · 16/02/2018 13:01

They have an accessible information policy that advises we use 14 font but they have said people must request this.

Removing sanibins is grim and ridiculous.

I wish I worked somewhere that paid me to eat sausages. I'd prefer twixs but I'd be ok with sausages.

I'm sorry but I'm laughing so hard at "go easy on the biros" Grin

GrumpyOldBagFace · 16/02/2018 13:09

The biros have become a source of amusement in the office.

RNIB guidance is 12 pt font at a minimum for any document intended for 'clear print'. In practice this means everything for a general audience in most organisations. Has an Equality Analysis been done on this change?

iBiscuit · 16/02/2018 13:16

From that's a good point (or pt Grin )

Maybe it's a case of formatting documents so they can be printed in a larger font if needed, but having a smaller font as default because people who don't need larger print won't bother changing it.

GrumpyOldBagFace · 16/02/2018 13:17

That's really interesting, thanks for that info. I doubt it has but I'll ask and raise this with my line manager.

There's a difference between office documents and leaflets at GP surgeries for example, in terms of accessibility needs.

MrTrebus · 16/02/2018 13:19

Do you work for Carillion?

GrumpyOldBagFace · 16/02/2018 13:20

The reports we send out are to the public (parents) and to our associated professionals (community health nurses, GPs, social services, schools).

OP posts:
GrumpyOldBagFace · 16/02/2018 13:20

Our CEO is far smarter than Carillion!

Re previous poster regarding colour & B&W prints - I'm kind of with your boss on this one!

I've just got a new copier lease for our office and we pay usage charges per page. Colour is literally 10 times the price per page of black and white.

We're not a big business, so I've gone around and made everyone's computer default to black & white. They can still print in colour if necessary, but it's a concious decision, rather than just hitting print and charging me £1.30 for a 100-page document instead of 13p! Considering the printer has done 25,000 prints in 10 weeks, the cost could vary significantly!

And we're just implementing a standardisation of documents policy, where font size has been discussed numerous times. Our final decision was based on appearance though, not paper usage!

Moonandstars84 · 16/02/2018 13:23

School stuff annoys me. They make you pay online it than insist you print off paperwork and send into school.

Trialsmum · 16/02/2018 13:24

They took our paper towels way too and replaced them with hand dryers which I’m pretty sure are powered by ants blowing gently on our hands! So we started using toilet roll to dry our hands (no time to wait for our hands to dry) so they took away the bins!

Our printers also default to double sided... sometimes... so we waste a load of paper having to reprint the things we need to be one sided 🙈.

I use small font to save space on my hard drive GrinGrin

TrueBlueYorkshire · 16/02/2018 13:35

Previous consultancy i worked for didn't replace anyone IT equipment some people where using 7 year old laptops with tiny screens.

I regularly poach consultants from there as people are so happy to come to a bright office with nice IT equipment and nice facilities with free snacks.

What is funny is that a new computer and screens is about £1000, but the cost HR cost for finding, interviewing and hiring an consultant is between £5K-£20K depending on their speciality.

ReelingLush18 · 16/02/2018 13:44

I can imagine that will be all about saving money! Not a bad idea though. I've actually started doing it before printing off the DCs' school projects!

It annoys me immensely when schools now expect parents to foot the bill for printing off homework etc (which can be costly with colour printer cartridges), claiming it reduces their eco-footprint, Yes it does but all they're doing is transferring the 'burden' (financial and eco) to parents!

PriaMaicel · 16/02/2018 13:49

Seems like a really simple and easy way to be more efficient. You can get about 20% more words on the page if you go from size 12 to 11 font. That isn't a saving most businesses can sniff at.

exWifebeginsat40 · 16/02/2018 13:51

if anyone ever used print preview, set their margins properly and looked at the number of pages before printing the world would surely be a better place.

i don’t want 24 blank pages with a £ on them. i want you to set your printing up properly.

sashh · 16/02/2018 13:54

They have an accessible information policy that advises we use 14 font but they have said people must request this.

That's not legal, you shouldn't have to request it.

Also ti depends on the font, some font 10 is easy to read some needs to be 14 to be readable.

sashh · 16/02/2018 14:01

If you set the lines between paragraphs with a 9 point font you can save even more, but ...

ShatnersBassoon · 16/02/2018 14:01

I think it's a very easy way to save money, paper and ink. Small things add up in huge organisations, whereas it wouldn't make any difference to me printing off 2 sheets per month at home. I like these simple to implement changes.
