Why can’t America ban automatic weapons?

I don’t get it. I honestly don’t. After Sandy Hook that should have been enough... statistics speak for themselves.

Why? What don’t I get?

Are we actually talking about a civilised country here? The type of person who enthusiastically wants to become an armed teacher is precisely the type of person that should fail every psychiatric test and should be nowhere near a classroom.

ohfortuna · 22/02/2018 18:30

Are we actually talking about a civilised country here?
perhaps we are witnessing the slide into corruption and disorder

So how does arming the teachers solve the problem? What if a teacher goes crazy and shoots the kids? Will all the kids need to be given guns and training just in case?
Absolutely! the kids will ^obviously6 need guns to protect them against sicko shooter teachers.

because the folks who work so hard at the @NRA are Great People and Great American Patriots. They love our Country and will do the right thing
and gun toting children are the right thing for the USA, children trained to kill will MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN

ohfortuna · 22/02/2018 18:33

reading trumps tweets on this I get the impression that he thinks he's in a shoot em up video game and is rubbing his hands together at the thought of a really big shoot out

PollyEthel · 22/02/2018 18:52

Umm... Much as some people might think otherwise, Canada is not a state.

peggy2467 · 22/02/2018 18:56

It's actually insane to think trump is suggesting arming teachers is the answer.
I would like for all of you on this thread (I know most people are agreeing here), but, try to imagine your children's teachers using a gun... my children's teachers would NEVER be able to shoot a gun in the case of an emergency, not only because of their view on guns, but also because they'd be shaking and scared for their own lives.
Who does Trump think these teachers are? Beefy Texan men who own rifles? Nope! Imagine a first grade teacher who spends the day reciting the alphabet and colouring, then they have to jump into action and shoot an attacker! WTF has the world America come to?

LokiBear · 22/02/2018 19:01

They will arm a 'highly trained' teacher. Some horrific accident will happen; a child will get hold of a concealed weapon or a teacher will shoot erroneously and someone will die. What will be the answer then? I despair.

Toomanytealights · 22/02/2018 19:10

How would it work? No point locking them up as fat lot of good they'd be in an emergency. Can't leave them lying in a drawer so that leaves wearing them. The mind boggles.

MrsSteveMcDonald · 22/02/2018 19:11

I think Trump watched Kindergarden Cop recently and thinks all teachers are like Arnie...

SersioulycanitgetWORSE · 22/02/2018 19:14

Yy Mrs Steve.

However, the senate is made up of 100 senators, 2 for each state. Some states like Canada have the population of a reasonable sized country (40 million)
Errrrrrm, what?

TheDowagerCuntess · 22/02/2018 19:48

Some states like Canada have the population of a reasonable sized country (40 million)

What the...?!

TheDowagerCuntess · 22/02/2018 19:49

Has anyone told Justin Trudeau that Trump is his boss?

Clem7 · 22/02/2018 19:50

Some states like THE SECOND LARGEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD have the population of a reasonably sized country Grin

Julie8008 · 22/02/2018 19:57

Americas descent into insanity is exactly the reason why they need guns, so they can fight back against the insanity and kill the insane. Hopefully the armed teachers band together into an armed militia and march on the white to protect themselves from the insane president.

MrsSteveMcDonald · 22/02/2018 20:01

I thought at first it was a typo and should have been California but it was done twice so less likely

CaveMum · 22/02/2018 20:10

There’s an amusing Twitter to the bloke from the NRA (forget his name) declaring on Fox News that “... Right to bear arms is "not bestowed by man but granted by God to all Americans as our American birthright."

Plenty of Americans are asking him to point out a) where in the Bible it mentions America or guns and b) evidence that God helped write the Constitution.

Canada IS a state in North America, it is NOT one of the United States.

Graphista · 22/02/2018 20:46

I don't think I buy anything American anyway on a regular basis. How easy would it be for most of us to not buy USA products?

Also while I understand the desperation and we DO want to help, but ultimately the only people that can REALLY change it are Americans themselves. Not only by not voting in fucking wing nuts like trump! But by NOT buying/owning guns, not giving business to shops that sell them or businesses that support pro gun policies/NRA, lobbying politicians and law makers regularly and consistently (why is there not an organisation as big and loud as NRA? Why not bring ALL the current smaller anti gun groups together to form a large group to rival them?).

"Do gun shops ever get shot up ?

Believe me - I've considered it!"

Are they even subject to protests?

Merrymouse - Canada is a COMPLETELY separate COUNTRY not part of USA

Clem7 · 22/02/2018 20:48

Canada IS a state in North America, it is NOT one of the United States.
Yes, it’s a state in the same way that the United States is a state. That clearly wasn’t the pp’s meaning though.

TheDowagerCuntess · 22/02/2018 20:55

However, the senate is made up of 100 senators, 2 for each state. Some states like Canada...

100 senators, two for each state.

I'd love to know which US state has been jettisoned to make way for Canada. Grin

Ructation · 22/02/2018 22:24

I assume merry meant California.

LouiseBrooks · 22/02/2018 22:40

My friend's child today asked to be home schooled going forward as she is scared of being shot if she continues at school. My friend is heartbroken that her child feels like this but I think she agrees with her.

But no doubt the NRA don't have a problem with a pre teen feeling that way because, you know, God and the 2nd amendment.

peggy2467 · 22/02/2018 23:16

@Clem7
Does it matter? Sure, educate people by correcting them politely and making them aware of their mistakes, but there's no need for all of these snide and sarcastic comments.
You wouldn't laugh in someone's face when they made a mistake, so why laugh at them online.

Clem7 · 23/02/2018 01:46

I’m Canadian and it’s a mistake I would laugh at in person. Merry wouldn’t have been the first to make that mistake either.

That said, I am now pursuaded she had Cali in mind and just had a bit of a brain fart.

ToffeeUp · 23/02/2018 08:10

Big companies like Enterprise car rental are ending their partnership with the NRA
