To think Mary Berry needs to get with the times?

Ok maybe I am being a bit unreasonable, I know she's 82. But I couldn't help but find myself a little irked yesterday on the one show when asked what a good Valentine's Day meal would be and she said "well all men love a bit of steak don't they." So Valentine's Day is a day for women to cook for the man??

My 89 year old grandmother was watching as well and actually commented before I did saying "well that doesn't mean I would like steak!!" Which made me feel a little better about perhaps being overly judgemental of a much older generation. But really Mary, not sure why the focus is on what darling husband/boyfriend would want Hmm

Barbara I also can't see how it is true. Claudia Roden, who is clearly the Queen of cooking, explains clearly that flour will have variability and you should expect that you might need a bit more or a bit less to get the right consistency.

Plus she does keep going on about margarine. I tried it. The cake was rank.

newyearsameme80 · 14/02/2018 22:54

Well she could say "my husband likes a steak" then couldn't she, not all men. My vegan dh would be unimpressed, for example.

WhineandDine1 · 14/02/2018 22:55

Would like to add she wasn't being asked what SHE liked to cook for Valentine's Day in which case if she wants to cook for her husband fair enough. She was asked to recommend a good meal to cook generally.

I don't know I just found it to be an odd response. Of course it's "harmless". Lots of things that people find annoying are essentially harmless. Doesn't mean you can't be irritated by them!

All I know is I would not be impressed if my OH expected me to cook his favourite meal for Valentine's Day. It's a day you should both enjoy! Surely that means finding a meal you both want? If it's his birthday, celebration of a new job or whatever then sure cook HIS favourite but Valentine's? No no.

I'm not a fan of Mary Berry.

I used to watch Farmhouse Kitchen during the holidays as a kid and there was a disappointing chill if her occasional segment came on.

Dorothy Sleightholme was where it was at: like your granny but let loose in a massive kitchen.

Ojoj1974 · 14/02/2018 23:07

I love MB but sadly I think she has had her day on TV

HeartOfSass · 14/02/2018 23:08

Meh, on the cake front, Stork is not at all bad. To be honest it does make a lighter sponge than one with butter. They are different but butter is not necessarily superior, just different.

I think there's some food snobbery around butter/stork in baking when actually in a blind taste test they would both be fine and a person might only pick butter as the better option if they recognised it as butter, not because it tastes superior.

I do A LOT of baking both with butter and Stork.

HeartOfSass · 14/02/2018 23:10

^ However buttercream with Stork really is rank. Not that it's been ecommended anywhere, but that's where it really does taste rank. Sponge is sponge though. Butter makes it heavier, stork makes it lighter. Both good.

ZaZathecat · 14/02/2018 23:11

Isn't it normal to think of treating your OH on Valentine's? If they were asking Jamie O, I presume he'd be planning to cook Jules' favourite.

GabsAlot · 14/02/2018 23:13

not popular but i dont like her

just gets on my nerves with her arent i perfect style

AntArcticFox · 14/02/2018 23:13

I do olive oil cake sometimes and like it.

I like the taste of butter but it gives a heavy crumb. Ok stork gives a better rise but then there's an absence of flavour. I can tell the difference: I think!

Ok bring on the blind testing..

Onlyoldontheoutside · 14/02/2018 23:13

I suppose if you are asking wat to have for a Valentine's meal, unless you are asking about restaurants then I would assume that you were doing the cooking, and doing it as a way of showing your appreciation for your partner then her only fault is assuming the sex of your partner. If the cooking is for what you like then you are a better judge if that than Mary Berry.
Besides she is an icon and not to be besmirched 😘

YANBU

and while we are at it I was thinking today why lingerie is a gift for the women when it's clearly a gift of a trussed up woman for a man.

And the "steak and a blow job" day thing in March is supposed to be what men get because they provide a card to a woman and lingerie (for themselves).

expatinscotland · 14/02/2018 23:26

I want a steak now.

Notthenameiwant · 14/02/2018 23:28

I'll cook him steak if he gives me head tonight Grin

Queenoftheblitz · 14/02/2018 23:31

It is a fact you will get a lighter higher sponge with margerine rather than butter.

I save the butter for the buttercream filling.

Terftastic · 14/02/2018 23:31

Mumsnet has quite literally gone mad.

It's Valentines. Do it, or don't. Mary Berry is not making you do anything - it's a tv show.

On the other hand - there are people set upon making you do things you don't want to do - and you're IGNORING it all. PEOPLE are trying to do away with your rights - #sexnotgender - get to it - don't ignore this. YOU need to get with the times and realise what's going on.

People are trying erase women's rights.

Ssssurvey · 14/02/2018 23:32

I think it's unreasonable to expect a person who is 82 to 'get with the times'. I assume most people who watch and listen to her take and understand her recommendations based on who she is.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 14/02/2018 23:35

Yeah I’m not surprised MB is all about putting the men’s on a pedestal. when Paul Hollywood cheated on his wife she was quoted saying “boys will be boys” Hmm

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 14/02/2018 23:36

*menz (damn traitorous autocorrect)

AlexaAmbidextra · 14/02/2018 23:40

This is the Mary Berry who, when Paul Hollywood's adultery came to light said 'boys will be boys'. I lost all respect for her at that.

VladmirsPoutine · 14/02/2018 23:43

This might be an unpopular view but I find MB awful. She needs to retire and enjoy her money now. It all just looks awful and contrived now. I'm bloody sick of her.

maamalady · 14/02/2018 23:48

You want butter AND stork for a sponge, I reckon. Stork makes it light, butter makes it taste all buttery. Yum.

squoosh · 14/02/2018 23:59

Woman who is considerably younger than 82 has different take on things to woman who is 82. Shocker!

For what it's worth I think Mary is very much with the times, representing the unrepresented older woman on prime time TV. Whilst wearing a jazzy bomber jacket.

squoosh · 15/02/2018 00:02

And the "steak and a blow job" day thing in March is supposed to be what men get because they provide a card to a woman and lingerie (for themselves).

You mean the thing which isn't actually a thing? I have never heard of steak and blowjob day outside of people on the internet being shocked by it.
