To think that Radio 2 isn't really demonstrating gender equality?

First time poster but long time lurker (well since the 2am feeds started with DD at any rate which is when I mostly read the aibu posts)...just a thought that has been crossing my mind of late since being on mat leave and listening to radio 2 for large portions of the day; given the current dialogue about gender inequality be it pay or lack of women in top jobs etc, aibu to think that Radio 2 is pretty appalling given that of it's five main 'prime time' daytime shows they are all male presenters who have been in posts for years now?
I appreciate they all have followings of (potentially) different demographics and I myself like listening to two shows in particular, but to be honest I am pretty bored with some of the presenters and find the likes of Sarah Cox, Jo Whiley, Fearne Cotton, Zoe Ball and Liza Tarbuck both refreshing and entertaining (and yes I know that four out of these five have their own shows but they are either once a week on a Saturday or late evening/night time).
I'm not saying that the male presenters aren't any good at their jobs, but these women are just as good (if not better impo) and yet from 6:30am-7pm there are no female presenters Hmm.
Just wondered if this had crossed anyone elses minds or if I simply have too much thinking time on my hands atm...

Love Sara Cox - she should have breakfast show
Love Jo Whiley - pleased she is getting into drivetime
Love Zoe Ball
Love Ken - there is no other

Not so keen on Vanessa Feltz - although Nicki Chapman is worse
Lisa Tarbuck is okaaay

Only thing about Drive Time I really like is confessions.

Can't stand Steve Wright or Elaine Paige (although I like musicals so listen anyway)

MadAssHatter · 14/02/2018 16:58

I see what you mean but I only like Lisa Tarbuck out of that list. I find Fearne and Sara really annoying. It would actually be nice to hear some new people ok the radio as even the women are ex radio1 djs that no longer fit the 'vision' for radio1

I wish they’d get rid of Steve Wright or at least stop him at 4. I miss talk radio too.

TheNoseyProject · 14/02/2018 16:59

I agree that’s pretty outrageous. Aren’t they all white too (I’m not a radio 2 listener).

I listen to 6music. Lauren Lavern is mid-morning and also gets by far the best guests. I think 6music are trying to address this as they have introduced more diversity at the weekends - Gemma Kearney and Amy lamae both have weekend shows now and they use their female music news reported Lizzie much more than they used to (and don’t let Radcliffe and maconie speak down to her like they used to).

I suppose it’s complex as you wouldn’t want anyone sacked but as people naturally move on getting more variety should be paramount.

Sara Cox is doing ‘back in time for tea’ on bbc2 at the mo and is brilliant! Way better than Giles Coren who did ‘back in time for dinnner’.

@TheNoseyProject

I listen to 6 music every day, I don't think Radcliffe and Maconie spoke down to Lizzie though, they are all good friends outside of the show even before she came to 6music.

But agree with the rest of your post, but I have to mention Nemone who is awesome.

Dljlr · 14/02/2018 17:39

I've not listed to Radio 2 ever, I don't think, and none of the presenters on there would make me want to (God I hate Jo Whiley with a passion!), but I really really can't stand Radcliffe and Maconie on 6Music. I switch off as soon as their show starts. Unfunny, persistent rambling nonsense and shit music. Love Lauren Laverne.

Justanotherlurker · 14/02/2018 17:52

I quite like Radcliffe and Maconie and find some of their ramblings quite funny Blush

Not sure how you can say its shit music though, it's pretty much standard 6music playlist stuff, its not lamacq or riley level, but I like both of them as well

TheNoseyProject · 14/02/2018 17:55

I think maybe you have to know that about them @justanotherlurker as the weird nicknames and constant ribbing to me came across oddly. She’s also getting more prominence on Shaun’s breakfast show which I like (though I do like Matt too).

TheNoseyProject · 14/02/2018 17:55

Also nemone is awesome!

FuzzyCustard · 14/02/2018 18:00

No-one could ever top Terry Wogan. RIP.

Yukbuck · 14/02/2018 18:01

I love Jeremy!! Don't get rid of him and his debates.
I also look forward to the 5pm song...!

Yukbuck · 14/02/2018 18:02

Enjoy yourself...it's later than you think....

leghairdontcare · 14/02/2018 18:05

Pop master is the highlight of my day. Ken is obviously the best. Fearne clearly messed up today when she awarded points for rock the boat but she's still much better than Trevor Nelson who should never be allowed to do pop master ever again.

To conclude, pop master is serious business but in general I have no objection to more female representation.

ShackUp · 14/02/2018 18:26

I heard Trevor Nelson claim that Pop Master was the hardest thing he'd ever had to do on the radioGrin

cjferg · 14/02/2018 18:26

Chris Evans is so irritating he makes me want to bang my head on the wall at 7am at work, Sara Cox was in today instead and is so much better,

Christmastits · 14/02/2018 18:50

Currently bored off my tits in hospital and there is a radio next to the nurses station and I want to cry when Chris Evans starts his show! It's dire!
But that might be because I'm used to hearing it on the way home from Work and I usually feel quite sick after a night shift so maybe it's that!

numbereightyone · 14/02/2018 19:00

It's one of life's great mysteries to me that anybody would like Simon Mayo. I really can't bear him or his boring show. I imagine his target audience to be somebody who lives in the Home Counties, who works in IT and thinks Simon Mayo is wacky and interesting. I just don't get it at all.
I like Ken Bruce though.

billysboy · 14/02/2018 19:05

Love sara cox ,evans is so in love with himself, cant stand Steve wright with all the hangers on especially now knowing he gets paid over 500k pa time to move on
Ken still king of popmaster

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 14/02/2018 19:06

Amol Rajan stood in for Jeremy Vine, once.

He was alright.

Can't stand Trevor Nelson. I'm not a fan of r&b or soul music either.

Saturday evening, as soon as Liza Tarbuck finishes and the news is over, I switch over to Absolute Rock until Paul O'Grady.

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 14/02/2018 19:09

Still miss Richard Allinson, too. Sad

butterybiscuitbasebasebase · 14/02/2018 19:12

I do a little victory dance whenever Chris Evans is on holiday, smug bastard. I love Ken Bruce though.

I get your point, I'd be happy for Chris Evans to be replaced by a woman and then at least there'd be some female DJs in the daytime line-up. As long as they don't take Ken Bruce I'd be happy.

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 14/02/2018 19:15

Ken Bruce is rated by Mumsnet Grin

numbereightyone · 14/02/2018 19:18

A few years ago they planned to replace Ken Bruce with Simon Mayo.
