AIBU not to tip my hairdresser

I am genuinely confused about this... I have no idea how to handle this - do most people tip? Not tip? Also if you do how much? Do you just hand it to the hairdresser (feels weird). I used to tip and have stopped...

I tip £5 regardless of what the cost is. Less seems a bit stingy and more too much. Am in London. Nails I tip £2 which seem the norm.

In a group of friends I have one is a hairdresser and several of them use her. Some tip and some don’t but they all find it very awkward. She, naturally, thinks it’s the right thing to do. In a salon, yes, but when self employed I’m not so sure. Friendliness also blurs the lines.

I think they may be taxed on assumed level of tips though...anyone know this?

Jaxhog · 14/02/2018 17:06

My place cost an arm and a leg, over 60 quid for a cut and blow dry. Annoying as I have short fine hair, so the blow dry takes less than 5 minutes. But that's for the salon owner who does do a great job. I've never tipped a hairdresser, unless it was really exceptional.

I was quite relieved to read this thread and find I'm not alone in not tipping.

Aria2015 · 14/02/2018 17:09

Yeah I tip for hairdressers, nails etc... usually around 10% (sometimes slightly more). I don't find it awkward, I just pay (on my card usually) and then say 'this is for you' and hand the tip over and they say 'thank you' and that's that! I do always make sure I have the correct cash for a tip beforehand though, to avoid any 'can you break a tenner' conversations lol!

morningconstitutional2017 · 14/02/2018 17:10

I've never tipped. The establishment I favour is a very down-to-earth working class place, not 'expensive designer' and it'd feel weird.

Gemini69 · 14/02/2018 17:12

but why are People in the UK Tipping ? are you Tipping for 'great service' ? or are you Topping because the Staff says your supposed too ?

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 14/02/2018 17:15

I don’t usually because I would find handing someone cash and being like ‘here, have this tip’ SO awkward. I don’t even understand how! I’m happy to leave it on a table at a restaurant or tell a taxi driver to keep the change but I always pay for hair cuts/colouring on card as it’s usually £50+ and I don’t carry that kind of cash so even if I did want to give them a tip it would become this weird handover of additional cash... how do you do it?!

feska5 · 14/02/2018 17:16

I don’t tip my hairdresser but always buy her a nice Christmas gift. I do tip taxis and I do tip 15% in a restaurant if I’ve had good service. Tipping does confuse me though.

Crazyladee · 14/02/2018 17:16

I tend to tip my hairdresser by handing over cash and then rounding it up by saying keep the change type thing. It's always about a fiver. Sometimes if I haven't got any cash on me, I'll pay by card and they won't get a tip.

I always feel a bit awkward as there's no hard and fast rule and leave the salon thinking are they thinking I'm stingy?

I HATE it when you go to pay somewhere like a restaurant and you get handed a card machine and right in front of the waiter/ess you are put on the spot as you have to choose a button to select whether or not you want to tip. I literally cringe and when they come over with the bill, I excuse myself to go to the ladies so my DH does it!

TheRealCinderella · 14/02/2018 17:16

I usually tip them..... by telling them not to eat yellow snow haha

FlopsyMcDoodle · 14/02/2018 17:19

I’ve never tipped my hairdresser and feel slightly awkward about it having read several of these threads over the years. Just how do you do it, practically? I get a full head of highlights and a cut and blow dry every couple of months. It costs £120 so I pay by card. Also the girl that washed my hair and makes the tea is only seen at those times, she’s not there for the paying. So do you give the girl on the till your card and then say a fiver for hairdresser and a couple of quid for washer? And tell the till person who it’s for?

Btw I am autistic and I don’t want to do it unless I’m certain I’m doing it right!

Thequeenisdeadboys · 14/02/2018 17:20

Surprised at all the non tippers. Tight buggers !

DuchessMinnie · 14/02/2018 17:22

My cut and colour costs about £125 and I give an extra £5. My hairdresser is brilliant and gives loads of good advice while she's working on my hair, it's nice to give a bit extra.

Gingertam · 14/02/2018 17:25

I always used to tip the hairdresser but stopped last year. The prices have gradually risen and it was just too expensive. I finally stopped after a conversation at work when out of 20 people I was the only one who tipped! Lots of people said they stopped as soon as hairdressers started to get minimum wage. I also agree that you don't tip the supermarket worker who earns the same. I will always tip restaurant staff though. Don't feel bad OP you can always buy them a bottle at Xmas.

Sparklemummyx0x0x · 14/02/2018 17:25

I've never tipped my hairdresser. I didn't realise it was a 'thing' to do or that people did. I spend up to £60 every 6-7wks as it is. As a single parent I can't afford to round it up or tip.
The only place I've tipped is in restaurants or in places where it's easier to round the bill up.
Rarely use a taxi so no idea on the protocol there.

Redglitter · 14/02/2018 17:26

Wouldn't cross my mind to tip my hairdresser. She lives in a luxury flat drives a very expensive sports car & has a holiday house abroad. She could buy & well me several times over

Gemini69 · 14/02/2018 17:26

do you Tip your checkout girl in the Supermarket ? do you Tip the Office Staff sending out your Bills for Electricity or Gas etc ? do you Tip the Cleaners at the Sports Centres ?do you Tip the Bus Driver ? or the School Teacher whose educating your Children ? do you Tip the Road Sweeper on your street ? all worthy roles in Life... do you Tip all those people too.. well done you Flowers

greendale17 · 14/02/2018 17:26

No I don’t tip eithef

fusushumi · 14/02/2018 17:28

I always finds tipping awkward.... with my hairdresser (who I've been going to for the last 26 years & he owns the salon) I tip by saying "no change" as I hand over the money. I also give a small tip to the girl who washes my hair. At Christmas I put £10 in with a Christmas card for her and gave a bottle of really nice gin to my hairdresser, but only because I was there on the last working day before Christmas.

greendale17 · 14/02/2018 17:28

Hardly. Why do some jobs deserve a tip but not others then? I’d rather tip my postman and dustbin guys than my hairdresser or waiter.

mumpoints · 14/02/2018 17:29

I'm a hairdresser tipper. This has served me well as it has meant that when I have been in a rush I always get an appointment, even if they have to stay late, when others have been turned away.

SmashingInAthleticWear · 14/02/2018 17:29

Yes Flopsy I was also wondering, those of you that tip the hair-washer - how? Do you slip it to them immediately after you've been washed, or do it when you pay and tell the till person to give it to them?

upsideup · 14/02/2018 17:31

where is it written in Law... that you must tip all the staff

Its not, its a polite gesture. It is also not written in to law that you must say thankyou to staff, though it is again polite to do so.

cjferg · 14/02/2018 17:33

Never tipped a hairdresser (probably only been about five times in my life)

But taxis around here are cheeky bastards. I don't usually ask for 20-30p change, but once I was skint, had to get a taxi back with a lot of shopping from supermarket, and handed the driver enough for him to give me a pound change to make things easier. He just assumed it was all for him and I had to awkwardly ask.

Yorkshirebetty · 14/02/2018 17:36

I don't tip my hairdresser, and thought I was the only one! I feel awkward every time I go to the till. She presents me with the amount on the card reader and I press ok. I wouldn't know how much to give or what to say.
