AIBU not to tip my hairdresser

I am genuinely confused about this... I have no idea how to handle this - do most people tip? Not tip? Also if you do how much? Do you just hand it to the hairdresser (feels weird). I used to tip and have stopped...

I always used to tip at the hairdressers but recently I decided to stop.
I had a basic wash, trim and blow dry (medium length straight hair, no particular styling) and I was in there 40 minutes. I was charged £40, so that’s £1 per minute!
I wish I could earn that!!

NameChangeOnTheRegular · 14/02/2018 16:46

I always tip my hairdresser (who is also the owner) Blush
I had no idea I was so gauche! Haha... it never gets turned down though. Plus, I love their magic and want to keep them forever.

Moussemoose · 14/02/2018 16:46

I tip the junior who does my colour but not the stylist as he owns the shop.

Kittypillar · 14/02/2018 16:46

Oh gosh, I've never even thought about tipping the hairdresser Blush feel a bit bad now! I always tip at restaurants and the like but it hadn't occurred to me to tip at the hairdressers...

itshappening · 14/02/2018 16:47

Many people do and many people don't. If you go very often (esp those who have regular blow dry appts) it may not be feasible to tip every time but instead you have the bonus of being a reliable regular customer and you could give a Christmas tip.

I think it also depends on whether you are happy with them and how overpriced it seems to begin with. I do add ten percent because I don't go very often, but I would not feel awkward if I didn't.

Estrelizia · 14/02/2018 16:48

I earn NMW and no one ever gives me a tip for doing my job, person cutting my hair probably earns NMW or more so no I don't tip .

DreamyMcDreamy · 14/02/2018 16:48

I know the rules about hairdressers and tipping.

Are you in the UK? If so there are no rules about tipping. You don't even have to if you don't want to,it's certainly not expected around here.
I don't tip them.

cuckooplusone · 14/02/2018 16:51

I go to a salon which charges me about £50 for a cut and blow dry, I am there for about 30min, it has never occurred to me to tip! I won't start now, as I think I am already paying a good rate. I might feel differently if it was £8!
I give 10% in restaurants and also tip if I am in the US. I would prefer to be given a price rather than tip.

inajam · 14/02/2018 16:52

I do, but because I like him, and because he does all the hair washing etc too. My hair cut is £36 so I just round it up to £40.

winterinmadeira · 14/02/2018 16:53

I do tip and she is always very grateful- however where I go is super cheap compared to some if the prices quoted by others

inajam · 14/02/2018 16:54

Oh, and also meant to say, people often round up when they pay me for babysitting, and it is always really appreciated. So I like to pass on the gesture!

steff13 · 14/02/2018 16:54

My haircuts are $30, I tip $10. I 'm in the US, though, we tip everyone.

DerelictWreck · 14/02/2018 16:54

I really don't understand tipping - why only some jobs and not others? Where's the line? I very rarely tip - occasionally in a restaurant if the service has been great otherwise nope - people get paid to do their jobs so why would I extra on top?

wibblywobblywoo · 14/02/2018 16:55

I abhor tipping, I feel it perpetuates a justification of low (or even no) wages for certain jobs on the basis that your money will be made up with tips - that's just wrong and hopefully the minimum wage will see an end to that whole practice. You do a job you get a proper wage, end of story. And if you can't operate your business on those terms then you haven't got a proper business IMO.

I've never understood it really, loads of people 'help' you by doing their job but would never receive tips so why for some and not others Confused

ohfluff · 14/02/2018 16:55

Mine was £55 last time, 10% on top would send it over £60 for a cut and blow dry!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 14/02/2018 16:56

I always tip hairdresser and the person who does my shampoo. In the salon where I go you see most ppl tip.

I also worked for tips through Uni so think once you have worked for tips you might be more likely to tip.

My hairdresser very accommodating-always manages to fit me in in a hair emergency and does a great job.

It's worth it to me!

Blankuser1992 · 14/02/2018 16:56

My place isn’t hugely pricy etc so I tip £5 every six weeks x I like the stylish , not too talky and doesn’t burn my scalp

I know the rules about hairdressers and tipping.
(clears throat) "You should tip your stylist and any junior staff who shampoo, make you coffee etc. The only time you do not tip the stylist is if they own the salon"

That is correct because my lovely hairdresser who is not the salon owner told me.

I tip my hairdresser and she owns her salon, but then a wash, cut & blow dry is only £33 so compared to what I used to pay (~£100 a pop). I tip because she knows I've moved nearly 100m away and she accommodates my last min requests for app's when I know I'll be in the area, as well being flexible with times when I've needed it. Plus, if you tip, you get better service than those that don't.

Elle8989 · 14/02/2018 17:00

I thought you have to tip. I tip about a fiver if I really like my hair. (Full head highlights). It takes my hairdresser ages and I go to a cheaper priced salon.

NewSingleMummy · 14/02/2018 17:02

I don't tip, she owns the salon and is a friend (no mates rates) I do give bottle/ wines at Christmas.

Crunched · 14/02/2018 17:02

DreamyMcDreamy I am in the UK and we have a thing called irony...Blush
So what I meant was, there is no rule for tipping hairdressers even though my hairdresser says there is (and she is great so I'm not arguing with her).

rookiemere · 14/02/2018 17:05

I tip the girl who washes my hair a pound and my hairdresser £2-3 for a cut and blow dry ( £40) and £5 for highlights and cut and blow dry (£80/90)

Although I did wonder last time why I bothered. Greedy salon had too many customers and I ended up wasting at least 40 minutes whilst I waited for her to finish up with her other clients before my appointment, and the extra ones slotted in when I was waiting for the colour to take.

There is a bit of an expectation on my part that ongoing tipping means you get good service. I think if I have to wait too long next time I may not bother.

Gemini69 · 14/02/2018 17:05

where is it written in Law... that you must tip all the staff ? Hmm

gillybeanz · 14/02/2018 17:06

I don't because I go for the haircut I can afford.
Adding a tip would mean I couldn't afford it.

bobstersmum · 14/02/2018 17:06

Doesn't tipping come from America where taxes and service charges aren't built into the price? Here, the price is the price, everything taken into consideration and charged for within that price, so unless you are well off or exceptionally happy with the service, do you need to tip?
