Try entering this: women killed in 2017. See what the first page of results looks like. I'll post a screenshot of what I got in a bit.

7/10 trans-related for me. I read the odd thread here about the transgender debate, but that’s about it. I’m surprised by this.

Have fed back to google.
I find it very interesting that the results are more as you would expect if you add uk to the search (& slightly more normal by adding usa)

I didn't get the trans links. I typed women killed in 2017

Well mine came up with transgender stuff and I NEVER google trans anything so it's naught to do with personalizing based on search history.

My first three results were about Karen Ingala Smith

Well, this is rather bizarre. When I googled women killed in 2017, on my iPad, I got the result as most posters.

But on my phone, the fourth link was to a Guardian article: ‘Shocking’ toll of women killed by men renews call for safe spaces www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/society/2017/dec/10/women-killed-at-home-refuges-womens-aid-survey

I googled the same thing on both devices at 4.06pm so how comes the Guardian article came up on my phone not iPad when I checked at exact same time? 🤔

I do and have never searched for trans stuff

This is so weird. I know it's just people manipulating algorithms but it feels really creepy.

I got a whole page of trans related articles too, but also Google's suggestions for what I might be searching for were nearly all trans-related too..

But what I find even more bizarre is that after I refreshed my phone, on the top page, the Guardian link wasn’t there anymore and neither was the link to Karen Ingala’s website just a load of trans stuff. Isn’t that odd?

NachoFries

I don't know why but Google split their mobile and desktop searches. I remember reading about it at the time. Most of the results are the same but one thing I remember was that searches that are local to you would be more likely to show up on your phone than your desktop, probably from the fact your mobile acts like a tracker wherever you go whereas a desktop is more likely to be static for longer. But as for the refreshing thing, I have no idea.

Here's mine. 3 trans stories at the bottom of the page.

I wonder what causes the huge difference in results?

Having just tried on my phone - the results are much more reasonable. Mainly about Women murder rates and domestic violence.

Weird!

Saying that I also googled "men killed in 2017" and got a load of police killing info?

Report
goose1964 · 13/02/2018 20:44

I got the same, it's not personalised for some reason is it trans acceptance day or something

Google bombs are really interesting, the ones that stand out are usually comical/political, for example there was a campaign by the English Disco Lovers to make it so that if you googled "EDL" you got them and not the racist EDL.

Some sneaky brands also use SEO manipulation, so that if you were to google their main competitor(s) they will actually appear before them in the search results.

Google's notoriously secretive about exactly how they work out page rankings, but people always find ways to game it.

Yep got that too. Never google about trans people! Best thing to do is educate our kids about these things. I often wish the internet had never been invented

MorganKitten · 13/02/2018 21:34

So you googled about women murdered, and you got pages about murdererd women? That’s strange....

You can send a screen shot to google to feedback on the search results you get, I’ve just done it

Huntinginthedark · 13/02/2018 21:46

You can pay for your listings to come up first
You can use algorithms
You can use content
There are tonnes of things you can do. All you need is some really tech savvy folk to make it their mission
Much like big brands do.

They’ve just got a lot of techy trans supporters no correlation obviously

No Morgan you silly billy. We googled murdered women and got lots of threads about men with gender dysphoria popping up which is really peculiar no?

The radical trans folk seem to have left the word ‘female’ alone, which is kind of them.

Wowww
It all feels a bit like... conspiracy... Shock

Report

Awe. Did someone mix up women and trans identified males again?
Don't worry, you'll learn.
