To declare dried fruit as one of the most disgusting things in existence?

Notable exceptions being dried bananas and dried apples, as they taste like sweets. And dried tomatoes because they are only honorary fruit.

Top offenders being dried apricots and the mysterious brown lump that made it into my granola this morning that was overly sweet and had the texture of gritty playdoh.

Who decided that leaving something out for so long that it shrivelled up into a twisted carcass of itself was somehow an improvement? And why the fuck do they keep hiding them in perfectly good breakfast cereals??

Omg, who doesn't love Christmas cake, pudding and mince pies? Fruit and fibre, cereal bars and musili bread? Couldn't manage a dried fig though.

Skiiltan · 15/02/2018 21:23

And why the fuck do they keep hiding them in perfectly good breakfast cereals??
Because they're sweet. Especially dates, as you observed. Would you rather just have sugar? If so, there are plenty of other cereals that will deliver it.

MajesticWhine · 15/02/2018 21:30

YANBU. Raisins and dates in granola = abhorrent. I could just about eat a dried apricot if necessary, but I find it never is.

UnimaginativeUsername · 15/02/2018 21:31

I think I’d rather just have the cereal be less sweet. But then again I like my porridge savoury and salty.

EeeSheWasThin · 15/02/2018 21:32

Dried fruit is my favourite thing! Raisins, dates, sultanas, prunes - I’d choose then over sweets or chocolate. Seriously.

fruitcake is a close second!!

Gwenhwyfar · 15/02/2018 21:44

"Similarly dried apricots are nice in tagine."

Yes, but in a stew they usually plump out a bit so they're re-hydrated if you like.

I like dried apricots just on their own as well, but try not to eat dried fruit because it's so easy to eat too many calories with them.

"There's the same amount of sugar in a grape as in a sultana."

Yes, but you're likely to eat many more sultanas as they're smaller. The water in fruit means you don't end up eating as many as when they're dried.

MexicanBob · 15/02/2018 21:48

I love dried apricots, and apples but dried pear is food of the gods!

WheelyCote · 15/02/2018 21:50

Dried mango is lush

Cranberrywensleydale · 15/02/2018 21:52

Totally with you OP!!!! 🍓🍇🍌🍒🍏🍐🍋

GrassWasGreener · 15/02/2018 21:52

dried apricots and bananas do bad things and upset my IBS very quickly, raisins are a yay but no matter how much i try i just can't begin to like most other dried fruit. i feel like i should, but i simply just don't

Angie169 · 15/02/2018 22:08

I like snacking on some dried fruit , esp mango, golden raisins and pineapple . do not like apple, banana , or apricots .
And hate fruit and nuts / seeds in meals

Mookie81 · 15/02/2018 22:19

Iceland have their dried fruit snacks right by the till. I'm obsessed with their dried cranberries covered in dark chocolate. And I only live 30 seconds away...

OliviaStabler · 15/02/2018 22:22

Gosh, at last, someone who recognises that raisins and sultanas are dead fruits which should be thrown away instead of being added to stuff on purpose!

Yes!

ShortandAnnoying · 15/02/2018 22:30

I'm just eating some raisins right now, they are really nice.

Thingsthatgo · 15/02/2018 22:33

Dried fruit is not as bad as that freeze dried garbage. Blergh! Here... Enjoy this delicious strawberry that has the same texture as instant coffee granules Hmm

Blerg · 15/02/2018 22:38

You are totally right OP. All horrible.

@Lidoshuffle your comment made me laugh. I can see it would have been a midwinter treat if all you had was turnips, but bleurgh.

Wdigin2this · 15/02/2018 23:20

I love dried fruit, fresh fruit, boiled, stewed and poached fruit......I love fruit!

Naughty1205 · 15/02/2018 23:23

Haven't read the full thread but hate dried fruit myself. They are also so so bad for kids teeth! They are 60% sugar and also stick to the teeth. Seriously, best avoid giving to kids.

5foot5 · 16/02/2018 00:01

Notable exceptions being dried bananas and dried apples,
Wow how weird people are!
I like all dried (and fresh fruit) but if I am iffy about any it is dried apple and banana.

DH and I have just come back from a mini break in a rather nice hotel. There was a typical breakfast buffet with a selection of dried fruit and nuts to add to cereal. One day I found a little gathering of elderly ladies suspiciously prodding a bowl of dried apples and debating whether it was squid or onion rings.

kateandme · 16/02/2018 00:28

there has to be an exception people have missed.and I' m shocked.sticky toffee pudding people.it is made my dried dates stirred into the sponge.

Babyroobs · 16/02/2018 00:59

Yanbu. I will never forget when my bil and sil arrived from the US with their latest gadget - a dehydrator. In the luxury cottage where we were staying they proceeded to dehydrate everything in site - pineapples, bananas etc and passed roynd a huge plate of dehydrated allsorts. I'll never forget my kids faces . They were never big fans of fruit in its natural form.

That wasn’t a fig in your cereal OP, it’s was a date. Far far cheaper and a common replacement for sugar.

RidingWindhorses · 16/02/2018 07:37

Love dried fruit but even I turn up my nose at dried banana.

Love Waitrose dried cherry and blueberries, apricots and prunes.

Much prefer it to cacky newsagent chocolate or biscuits.

RidingWindhorses · 16/02/2018 07:40

Me. Hate them all.
