Because it is 2.35am and she just will not go the fuck to sleep.

She’s 7 months old has a cough. I know it’s not her fault but my patience is wearing thin. I have tried everything. She is exhausted. Eventually dozed off and then coughs herself awake two mins later and shouts and bawls till I go through and put her dummy back in. She has been like this since 11pm.

Please send help. And maybe some coffee. Husband fast asleep as he has a big court appearance tomorrow so I don’t want to disturb him (DD1 currently asleep in our bed on top of him so he’s suffering a little bit at least) but OMG this is so hard. I could throw up I’m so tired.

How are you doing today Ginny? Is all OK with the LO?

Hello yeah she’s ok still coughing but happy in herself (which is more than can be said for mummy!) she finally settled around half four and I got up with DD1 at seven. Brutal. Just keeping busy today.

Doctor never any help. Viral etc. It’s Dd1 bringing coughs and colds home from nursery I suspect. Cot is propped up already. I’ve bought a calpol plug in so hopefully that’ll help tonight 🤞🏻

Yep, brutal. Same here with DS bringing home nursery germs. Three times since November. We haven't been all well as a family since before Christmas.

There is no hope!

Dd is —fucking— 4 and had me up since 430am.

I thought those days were over

Hunker down guys - it does get better.

The first time DD slept through I woke DH to tell him - he was not impressed!

Tbf we’ve had a family bereavement, we’re not at home and her routine is shot to bits.

Boots smelly plug in thing really helps as does the cot elevated and room not too warm.

We’ve spent 2 out of her 5 Christmas days in A&E with croup. Brutal. X

This has been helpful though. Whilst I wouldn’t wish sleepless nights on anyone it’s comforting to know you’re not the only one. It can be lonely at 3am

3yo DS has had more awful coughs this winter than previous years. SO glad it's half term and am hoping for a break from constant coughs for a week or so.

haven't read the thread OP so sorry if I am repeating anything.

Humidifier can help ease a cough. I'm asthmatic, coughs and colds are eased a lot with a humidifier. Bowl of water next to the radiator will help if you dont have a humidifier. I used that a lot before investing in a proper one.

Using raisers to raise one end of the cot up slightly so baby isn't lying flat. This could help ease the constant night time coughing and help you and her sleep more. Use a couple of thick books (yellow pages was always useful for stuff like this!) Don't put anything under her mattress though.

bath in a steamy bathroom before bed. eg fill the sink with just hot water for the steam while you bath in the bath.

vicks.

Can i ask, the person who mentioned the potato slice, does it really work??
I'm tempted to try a humidifier as my baby seems to cough a lot at night

And deffo the bowl of water on the radiator.
Change the water every day too.

Damp towel on radiator works well too

Hi, I haven't read through all posts but have you tried snuffle baby vapour rub on feet with socks on at night? It was the only thing that worked with my two.
I hope you're ok today, sleep deprivation is horrendous

Can I ask, why shouldn’t you put anything under the cot mattress? I currently have the mattress from the Moses basket under there to prop it up a bit I didn’t realise that you shouldn’t do that Blush

Hi op, my 9mo dd was the same as this last week. It as just awful for both of us as she was teething really bad aswell. I put baby vicks on her chest and soles of her feet at night and bought the calpol plug in which really helped. I put it in about an hour before she was going to bed, gave her some calcough syrup and a little bit of calpol just in case all the coughing was giving her a headache. One night I made a bed on the floor and slept with her sitting up in my arms. I haven't read the full thread so I'm sorry if I repeated anything that you've already done! Hope you and dd get some sleep soon! Xx

I wasn't aware of that either, I have a folded towel under the Moses basket mattress.

My dad turned up with one of these when DD had a really bad cough around a similar age and I hadn’t had much sleep in a few days. It did make a difference and I still use it now she’s older.

Another night looms. She is finally settled in her cot but I suspect she will be up later that’s what she did last night.

I’ve put a calpol plug in in her room. It’s pretty strong (very small room) - they’re safe right??

Hi OP, our daughter has a small room and has had the calpol plug in, been fine.

Report
hannahbanana2007 · 13/02/2018 21:56

Yes ours was in a small room too and seemed fine. Just check the instructions, have a vague memory it shouldn't be left on over a certain amount of time (8 hours?) as the pellet obviously dries out over time so needs to be turned off/replaced with a new one so it doesn't keep heating the dried one

Humidifier - only thing that stopped mine coughing as ds3 decided to end up with constant colds from 6 months old til about a year

Report
Allthewaves · 13/02/2018 22:13

We still use a cold air humidifier it when anyone gets a cough

I was always advised against putting anything under a mattress and raise the end of the crib or cot. That way baby is still flat but at a raised angle and not propped up in an potentially awkward or uncomfortable position. Raising the mattress I would worry about baby rolling over getting stuck between mattress that isnt fully flat and side of the bed and not being able to roll back. I'd also be concerned about over heating with extra layers under a mattress. Keeping the mattress flat to the crib would be safest.

I used to give my dcs room a full on deep clean when they had coughs - wet dust every nook and cranny around their cot, vacuum, super clean sheets and even wash and tumble dry the soft toys. Made a big difference (when I’ve got a coldness or hayfever I’m more sensitive to dust)

Another mum who used Vicks on the soles of the feet and found it really worked.... Good luck!

Report
OhBigHairyBollocks · 13/02/2018 22:36

Our go to on these nights is cot propped up, dehumidifier on with a bit of olbas oil/Vic whatever in the bit on the top. Sometimes vix on the feet too.
We have an inhaler for DS if he gets really bad but the above seems to help enormously.
