Disgusting?! I bought some to save time kind of thing if I just wanted something to stick in the microwave and my god they are awful, was still frozen even though putting them in the microwave for the time stated so had to go in for an extra 5 minutes. Taste very powdery and aren't even cheap?! Aibu in thinking they are disgusting?

Now if you had said this to me a couple of month ago.. I would have agreed!

However, I put one in OH lunch ( frozen) and by the Tim exit gets to lunch time it’s like 60% defrosted and then he blasts it for four minutes or so and all done!

I’ve done the same and I quite like them now.

But from froZen frozen they seem to be gritty

WorraLiberty · 12/02/2018 14:33

I don't like jacket potatoes anyway but my DH does.

He microwaves them and then crisps the skin in the oven or under the grill.

The time stated is only a guideline really.

lalalalyra · 12/02/2018 14:35

From frozen they aren't the best, I keep them in the fridge (they never hang around longer than a week in this house) and they take 3 minutes in the microwave and are lovely.

susurration · 12/02/2018 14:38

You know you can just microwave a fresh potato for jacket potatoes yes?

MyKingdomForBrie · 12/02/2018 14:38

I just don’t understand them - you can stick a potato in the microwave for 10 minutes and get a much nicer result!

Dancingfairy · 12/02/2018 14:45

They are mccains one. Yes I do realise I can microwave potatoes but I wanted food I could freeze so could be kept for a while.

I have never really got the point either given it only takes about 7 minutes to do one “from scratch” anyway.

magicstar1 · 12/02/2018 14:52

The McCain ones are awful, but the ones from Aldi are gorgeous.

Dancingfairy · 12/02/2018 14:54

I normally cook that's why so it was more food I could freeze just incase. Will try the aldi ones thanks.

The Iceland ones are okay, not as good as proper oven cooked ones but better than just straight up microwaved. They’re handy for a quick dinner for DD between school and a club or as a carb base to stick stuff like a bit of left over chilli on for lunch.

Titsywoo · 12/02/2018 15:03

I really like the bannisters ones

romany4 · 12/02/2018 15:04

McCains are disgusting. I get the Iceland ones and they are lovely

Titsywoo · 12/02/2018 15:05

And I think they taste much nicer than a potato just bunged in the microwave. I suppose they have been part baked and they have oil or something on the skin so aren't all dried out.

custardcream1988 · 12/02/2018 15:08

What's all this about them keeping for longer if you freeze them? Ignore the best before date, I've kept baked potatoes in the fridge for aggeesss. They are fine.

Just buy them fresh!

fluffiphlox · 12/02/2018 15:09

Well I’ve heard everything now. I didn’t even know this was a thing.

Notso · 12/02/2018 15:15

I like them, they are way nicer than microwaved from raw ones. Not as good as oven baked but more convenient. I keep a pack in to do quick potato skins.

MissEliza · 12/02/2018 15:17

McCains are terrible as I've unfortunately just found out but Banisters are really nice

KurriKurri · 12/02/2018 15:20

My elderly mum used to live on these when she was still living at home (she is in a care home now) and bags of salad. We siggested it would be just as easy to microwave an ordinary potato but she tried and some how managed to explode it in the microwave.

Anyway at least in meant she ate something (i made loats of meals for her freezer she could just bung in the microwave but she didn't use them)

Bit of a rambly answer (and in fact not really an answer) they wouldn't be my choice, but apparently they are a big hit with women in their nineties with very limited interest in either cooking or eating - so they have thier place.

Nicpem1982 · 12/02/2018 15:28

My bil cooks a batch of jacket potatoes in the slow cooker and then freezes them, and pops them in the oven to crisp them when he wants one.... I've yet to try this but he swears by it

LemonShark · 12/02/2018 15:35

I love them!

But the trick is to microwave them as directed, then stick them in the oven with some olive oil on the skins for ten mins or so.

It makes them really crispy and much more delicious somehow than oven ones from the start.

I can never be arsed to oven them the whole time and they rarely come out nice and the microwave ones aren't nice without an oven finale. Turns out decent jackets can be had with a bit of both.

gussyfinknottle · 12/02/2018 15:35

They were a godsend to my late mum. And any of us visiting her with little chance to prepare a hot meal when focussing on her.

haggisaggis · 12/02/2018 15:38

Kurri, I was just about to say that my mum seems to live on them (80 years old, - lost all interest in food and cooking since my dad died) so for that reason I think they're fine.

fluffiphlox · 12/02/2018 15:39

Prick a potato, rub with olive oil and salt, bake at 220C for an hour or more. Job done and nice crisp skin.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/02/2018 15:43

Best way from scratch is in a combi microwave - oven on full blast plus microwave - 2 nice big ones done with crispy skin in 14 minutes here.

Dancingfairy · 12/02/2018 15:48

An hours not really a quick meal though is it?
