AIBU to think my weight loss should be noticeable by now?

FollowYourOwnNorthStar · 12/02/2018 12:27

So I’m 161cm tall and I’ve lost 8kg since December. 110kg down to 102.

I think I. An see it slightly in my face, and maybe some clothes are slightly, (slightly!) looser. Or maybe it’s just me grasping at straws.

AIBU to think that it should be a bit more noticeable? I get maybe not to others yet, but shouldn’t there be tops that are definitely more looser, a bra that needs strapes adjusted, or trousers that used to be too tight/uncomfortable to sit down in, but now are easier? I’m not asking to go down a size....but something????

I’m starting to think the scales are wrong and I really haven’t lost a thing. Seriously getting close to cracking open some biscuits and giving the whole thing up.

Has this happened to anyone else? Does it kick in soon???

bluntness

Blush

I know. Blush

I mean, she was sitting down / at a table and she's always carried a lot of fat in her stomach so that might have been partially hidden?

Idk. She says she'll need to lose an other 20 to be at her "ideal" weight so she's still chubby.

honeyroar · 12/02/2018 13:13

I lost 1 and 3/4 stones last year. People noticed after a stone and a half. You're doing very well, keep at it.

WashBasketsAreUs · 12/02/2018 13:15

Without wishing to be unkind, I've found that the bigger you are the longer it takes for it to be noticed by other people. Then all of a sudden- boom!
I've lost over a stone on my own devised diet, no one really noticed, although I was relatively slim beforehand but wanted to lose the " biscuit tum ". Only 2 people have noticed.

kaytee87 · 12/02/2018 13:16

So you're 5"3 and you've lost just over a stone?

I'm 5"4 and I've lost just over a stone in 11 months and I can definitely see it.

Maybe it depends where you've lost it from or how big the percentage loss is as a whole?

Why don't you take measurements? That might spur you on a bit.

Congratulations on your weight loss.

FollowYourOwnNorthStar · 12/02/2018 13:18

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. I really hope it’s just around the corner. I don’t care about others noticing, but I really need to notice something myself to make it worthwhile. I’m starting to think the electronic scales are just wrong!

WorraLiberty I should have put the conversion - I am 161cm or 5 feet 2.8 inches. I started at 110.2kg, which is 17.3 stones, and I have lost 8kg (1.2 stones) making me now 102kg or 16.1 stones.

Bluntness100 No offence taken, I do know I still have a fair bit to lose....no point in trying to sugar coat it! (Coating things in sugar is what got me here!)

JuliannaBixby I.m not exercising (other than walking) at the moment, although I hoped to start once I lost a bit of weight and generally became a bit fitter. I’m pleased to hear you think that might help. It will increase my motivation to start. Finding a gym all seems a bit scary at the moment.

Flopismyparentingguru I suspect you might be right about my clothes being too tight for me when I started (part of the reason for starting was that I was NOT going to buy bigger clothes!) but I just thought something I wear might be a bit looser (not even baggy, or too big.......just looser!) or maybe one of the other tops that I could put on, but I didn’t wear as they looked to tight, might now not look too tight.

Sigh. The common consensus seem to be to wait until 2-3 stones. I’ll look for a different motivation to keep me going, and try and keep my hand out of the biscuit jar until then. Thanks everyone.

I've just lost 3.5 stone (around 25kg?) and only just got to the point where none of my clothes fit!

Take some selfies and compare them to older photos and you'll probably notice a difference in your face shape. Its something probably only you will notice but with 1 stone down there'll be some changes.

Don't forget to do your measurements as well (waist, bum, thigh etc)

Keep up the good work!

BoredOnMatLeave · 12/02/2018 13:23

I've lost about 3 stone and only some of my old clothes are looking too big now, I find it takes about 1.5st to drop a dress size and about 2st for people to notice.

Thebluedog · 12/02/2018 13:23

Are you still wearing the same clothes? A friend at work lost nearly 3 stone but you couldn’t tell as she was still wearing the same clothes (allbeit a bit looser). It wasn’t until she bought fitted clothes in the right size that you could actually see a big difference

amusedbush · 12/02/2018 13:25

It took about 3 stone before people commented on my weight loss and by 4.5 stone it was a striking difference.

ShotsFired · 12/02/2018 13:26

I lost about 6 stone and my face a was bit more toned, but that was it. I didn't get my Barry Bethell big trousers moment, I still wore all the same clothes I always had. Nobody gasped at me.

Fucking depressing that was. I wanted to stand in one leg of my old jeans!! Wink

APlaceAtTheBSDTable · 12/02/2018 13:27

Keep track of your measurements. Sometimes you don't notice when you've lost an inch or two but if you take your measurements at least you'll know that you are losing even if it's not immediately obvious. Plus as a PP said, if you're still wearing the same clothes then people won't notice that they fit differently.

TalkinPeace · 12/02/2018 13:27

Exercise will definitely help with you seeing the benefits of the weight loss.
Exercise does not make you lose weight - as you clearly understand
but toned limbs will look better than untoned.
THe more exercise you do the better your circulation will be and that will help your skin to shrink onto your smaller body.

FollowYourOwnNorthStar · 12/02/2018 13:28

Thebluedog yes, still wearing the same clothes, that is, anything in my wardrobe that will fit me! I have a few items that I am hoping to get into, but whenever I try them on they still look too tight and I am reminded of a sausage busting out of it’s casing. NOT the look I want to portray!

catmumof1 I have been doing measurements, and they only show a cm here, or 2cm there. It’s not very encouraging at all, but I have hopes that one day I’ll look back on them and see the gradual drop and be motivated by it.

7% change isn't a lot. 7% on me would be < 10 lbs which I would tend to notice (would go down one clothes size) but I don't think anyone else could see a difference.

8kg is a good start, though, I hope you don't feel discouraged.

motherofyorkies · 12/02/2018 13:35

Take your measurements!!! Sometimes when we have a lot to loose, our shape stays pretty much the same for a while but all the measurements are going down. If you loose an inch from your bust, waist and hips, you still look the same from straight on even though you are smaller.

Take some photos a close up of your face, and whole body from the front, side and back. I lost 19 kg and last year and the most dramatic change was from the back. A lot of my clothes didn't seem to change that much for a while they were made of stretchy fabrics and were too tight when I started. I honestly couldn't tell any difference in the top that I took my "before" picture in until I looked at the photos.

I have another 12 kg to go to be a healthy weight. We can do this!

Bluntness100 · 12/02/2018 13:38

You will get to thr stage it's noticeable. Honest. Don't stop and just put it back on again. Just think of the summer time. And the small size you'll be if you keep at this pace and how great you will feel.

So you can either look forward to a summer of feeling fab and being a healthy weight, or you can be your old weight and possibly more. Your call, but if you want to spend your summer feeling great back away from the biscuits!

FollowYourOwnNorthStar · 12/02/2018 13:44

Beep, beep, beep (this is me, the wide load, backing away from the biscuits!

MsRinky · 12/02/2018 13:46

I'm your height and was about the same weight you started at at the beginning of last year. No-one noticed until I'd lost 25kg and dropped from a 22 to a 16. Then they all noticed at once, and won't stop banging on about it, and now there is a part of me that would quite like to go back to being invisible again.

Groovee · 12/02/2018 13:46

I found putting photos together made me see it. I didn't see it by looking in the mirror or through my clothes until the 2st mark. I'm half a pound off 5st and still get a shock.

Hissy · 12/02/2018 13:47

I don't know what I've lost over the last few months, but I'm down 4 sizes.

Not ONE person at work has said a thing.

It IS noticeable, I know this because I see it.

Some people don't like to comment because it's not their business, others don't comment because they are jealous or resent what they themselves can't do. Others don't like to acknowledge nice things in our lives.

The main thing - in fact the ONLY thing - that's important is that YOU are happy with the way you are. Do this for YOU, not anyone else

HUGE WELL DONE!

Hissy · 12/02/2018 13:48

Can I just say a massive well done to all those here who have managed to shift some serious excess!

It's so hard, especially as we get older, and there are some amazing achievements being posted here - very inspirational

sadie9 · 12/02/2018 13:56

Asking this question also might be your mind trying to make you go back to the old 'comfortable' ways. So you are bordering on saying 'I can't see any difference in myself, what's the point of healthier eating, if it's not going to make a difference'...I mean it'd be a great excuse to give up wouldn't it? Then you could say 'Oh well, I lost X amount and it didn't make ANY difference whatsoever. I'm one of those people who can lose loads and I stay the exact same size!'
So part of you doesn't want to see any positive changes, so you may be denying that when you look at yourself in the mirror. Because another part of you just wants to go back to the old patterns of behaving. Probably no accident you are feeling like this on a Monday morning either!
You sound like you are doing great, so don't let some self-doubts interfere with your plans for yourself.

VitriolicMuse · 12/02/2018 13:57

Take regular photos. I lost 6 stone and it was only by looking at photos i realised a) how big I was and b) how well I was doing. You'll just gradually find things easier as time goes by and think wow! I think the same goes for weight gain really, people don't notice you gaining a stone or 2, your jeans still fit at a push and then you cross a line and it's noticeable. I've gained a bit back now and I think people are waiting for me to announce my pregnancy lol.

Luxanna · 12/02/2018 14:14

Look online at patterns for dress makers. You will see how small the difference is between sizes when cutting out fabric for clothing. I've lost 6 stone over the past few years. I'm still wearing some of the same clothes, they're just loose instead of tight. It depends how big you were to start with also. The more you have to lose, the longer it'll take to become noticeable in your own eyes. I experienced this like you seem to be doing but my DH could see it.

Please don't give up, you are doing really well to have lost that amount in such a short time. Don't lose heart. Even if you eat those biscuits, it doesn't have to be the end of your weight loss efforts. It's only a few biscuits on one day, tomorrow is a new day.

Another possibility, could you be retaining water because that can mask weight loss sometimes.
