Do you need a garden ?

Downsizing from large house with lots of ground which was great when kids little but now drives me insane . I am not a garderner ! However have found a sweet little cottage just big enough but has no garden. Do you live in a flat or house with no garden - how do you feel about it ?

I live in a flat - my one thing is make sure you’ve got enough room for a tumble dryer, then it sounds perfect!

How old are u? My parents downsized from a house with huge garden when we were 16 to a flat. I had my first age 17 and my brother had his first age 22 so my parents were young grandparents and regretted getting rid of the garden for grandkids

I live in a flat with no garden, which I’m happy with.
In an ideal world I’d like a tiny little paved outside courtyard, just enough for a chair and a small table where I could sit and read in the summer- wouldn’t like to have to keep any plants alive though so very very low maintenance.

Im 51 - probably 10 years off grandchildren - if i babysit my thoery has always been at thier houses :)

I live in a terrace with 2 kids and a dog with no garden. We have a car parking space which we put a rotary airer on when the car is at work with dh. Or we park the car on a neighbours space and she puts her washing on our airer too.

Though tbh I would love a garden to be able to stick the dog in when he's having his crazy moments.

You might regret not having your own little bit to sit out in, on a sunny day. Especially if you are used to stepping out of your own back door.

Depends. I like mine because I like a lot of space around me so no neigbour's house is very near on any side.

Lots of people in flat in London manage without gardens and instead just walk to parks on hot days or even rent an allotment.

Going from place with garden to place with no garden well, communal bit, no privacy) and I'm worried about it because of DS... but take this winter. We have had the horrible viruses going round and it's been too rainy/cold to go out when we have felt well.

So our plan is to move and then rent a place in the summer hols with a garden!

I would miss my garden terribly and suspect you might with none at all.

Just to step outside with a cuppa on a summer morning and check what’s changing in the garden. Sitting out with a book on a nice day or a glass of wine in the evening.

I would definitely downsize if you have too much land but maybe not quite so much?

I live in a terrace and have a bit of a 'yard'. Enough space for some pots and a bit of decking. We moved from a house with a big garden. The upkeep was a pita and we have never ever missed it.

We had a terrace with no garden before DC. Only reason we moved was to gain a garden. Did have a small courtyard though and that would be fine for us without DC.

I live in a flat. Only time I miss having a garden is when the dog needs a wee in the early hours!

I live in a first floor flat with no garden, only thing that bothers me is nowhere to hang the washing and I don't have a tumble dryer so clothes have to dry on the heaters/clothes horse.

Other than that I'm fine not having a garden. I get fed up sitting around in the garden anyway and as a single working parent the upkeep would be just another hassle for me. I do live directly opposite open fields and a park so DS and I go there a lot in summer.

By choice I would always have a garden. Just being able to step outside when it’s hot. Yes you can go to a park but it’s not the same.

I spent a decade living somewhere without a garden - and have just spent our life savings moving to our new house which has a massive garden! I love it. I love having an extra outside room, somewhere to let the dogs loose, somewhere to hang washing on nice days, somewhere to potter because I love plants and gardening...

It depends on what you use your garden for and how much time you spend in it as to whether you 'need' it or not.

I've lived in a flat with no garden but it was very close to a large park. Lots of residents would go to the park with camping chairs

I thought I really wanted a garden after living in a top floor flat in London for many years. Got one now and not been out in it at all and not much interested to be honest. I'll reserve final judgement til the summer but I don't think they're all brute cracked up to be to be honest. And you won't need a lawnmower.

I'd really miss having a little bit of outside space. There's nothing like drinking the first cup of tea of the day outside at 6am at the height of summer.

We have a little courtyard. I'd live something bigger and would go mad without anything.
We live very near a park but it's not the same when you just want to sit in the air for half an hour.

I don't have a garden because the choice was one bed flat with a garden or 2 bed without. We went for the extra bedroom. I would love a garden but don't get too worked up over wanting things we can't have. Flats without gardens tend to have other perks - central location, close to transport links, low maintenance, affordable. Look for the positives.
