Washing machine AIBU

Posting for traffic - sorry!

I’m living with the relatives at the moment, and last week they left to go on holiday to a long-haul destination (very far away) for two weeks.

The night before they left, they put a wash on. When the wash finished, they couldn’t open the washing machine to get the clothes out, so the clothes are still in there.

They asked me to try to open the machine door again after they left, and I couldn’t get the door open. The door handle sort of detaches from the machine, if that makes sense, and doesn’t hold firm when I try to open the door.

I spoke to them about it, and they’ve said they don’t want me to call anyone out to have a look at the machine as it’ll be complicated for them to arrange, and expensive. That’s fair enough, but I’ll be without a washing machine for the whole next two weeks.

I put another wash cycle on now, just to see if the door might open after the cycle finished, but I still couldn’t get it open. It’s an Indesit washing machine, if that’s makes any difference.

I can of course take my clothes to a laundrette, but it’ll cost £15. I’ll probably have to.

AIBU to:
a) feel a bit frustrated at my relatives?
b) ask you for your advice on what i should do?

If you pull it out - if possible - there could be a label with the serial number, make etc on the back? Usually a white label with say 'indesit model '645654ERFDD' serial number '67654tyrfghgfdfh565' etc

sallyarmy1 · 11/02/2018 16:58

I agree with Julie.

All my male family members would at least have a look at it. The females would ask their male partners to have a look....

Best to cut out the middle woman :)

Notso · 11/02/2018 16:58

I just googled Indesit emergency door release and several different methods came up...

I don't agree with Julie, being the engineer in the house. Bit sexist innit.

Notso · 11/02/2018 17:00

Mine, not Indesit, has a little leaver that you pull down in the pump housing.

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 11/02/2018 17:00

I don’t have any family members who live nearby unfortunately.

Don't worry op, reading instructions online and following them doesn't actually require a penis Hmm

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 11/02/2018 17:04

I really don’t want to damage their washing machine so I think I’ll leave it for now. I’ve just watched a YouTube video where the washing machine door wouldn’t open, and I think it’s the same problem. I think they’ll need a new door handle.

It's odd that your relatives think it will be "complicated for them to arrange" for it to be mended when you are there to do it for them! In their position I would hate to come home from a holiday with 2 weeks of dirty clothes and no functioning machine, so I would be glad if you dealt with it! But if they have specifically said not to, I guess you have to go with that....

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 11/02/2018 17:09

I agree, fusushumi. I think maybe they just don’t want to pay over the odds for the job, and want to get someone in who they know will do a good job.

Nanny0gg · 11/02/2018 17:21

Then if they told you who that was...

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 11/02/2018 17:25

What do you mean Nanny? I don’t understand - sorry.

If you knew who they would call, you could call them and get it done.

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 11/02/2018 17:39

I don’t, unfortunately TellsEveryone - it doesn’t look like they've had this problem before.

DeathStare · 11/02/2018 17:42

Paris - I think their reply really means that they are not prepared to pay for anyone to fix this until they've had a look at it themselves to see whether they can fix it themselves, but they don't want you messing with it.

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 11/02/2018 17:45

I agree with you DeathStare and I think that sounds fair.

I'm just thinking what state the clothes will be in after 2 weeks in the machine,

borntobequiet · 11/02/2018 17:49

When I had this problem with an Indesit machine, if I turned it off at the wall, waited a bit and turned it on again, the door unlocked.

TheChineseChicken · 11/02/2018 18:56

But won't the clothes be rotten after two weeks?

Nanny0gg · 11/02/2018 19:50

They'll probably be mouldy

MatildaTheCat · 11/02/2018 19:56

One I owned did this and it was simply knackered and needed replacing. I would email and explain that their clothes will be ruined so what would they have you do? If they are returning home from holiday with piles of dirty washing it would be far better for them to have the machine either repaired or replaced while they are away.

I would press slightly on this. It’s a total pain in the arse.

MatildaTheCat · 11/02/2018 19:59

That model is still available so not an old one probably. May even be under guarantee. They are just avoiding hassle. Remind them of their dirty laundry..

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 11/02/2018 20:54

I texted my relatives a couple of hours ago, and they’ve said not to worry. I turned the machine off at the wall earlier, but the door still won’t open unfortunately. I think it’s a problem with the door more than anything else, as the door handle just doesn’t let me open the machine at all. It’s so weird. I think the handle might need replacing.

Littlefrogletx · 11/02/2018 21:03

The clothes will be mouldy and if there is anything in there with metal like jeans or underwired bras rust too.
