Do you put your washing out when it's cold?

Bright windy day here.
Not damp but coooold.
I was going to put the washing out anyway. I doubt it would dry but it would have got some air through it.
Husband thinks it is a silly idea.
We went out before the machine finished and it's too late now anyway but curious what other people think. Because I live life on the edge like that.

No maddie
Im your age group and I
A. Cant be arsed hauling it in and out and still having to hang up againto completely dry.
B. Hideous cold washing smell-love warm sunny day dry smell tho.

CecilyP · 11/02/2018 17:40

Are you putting it out on a Sunday? Tut tut!

Yes we do everything here on Sunday now! Can't believe how early the shops in England close on a Sunday afternoon.

WashBasketsAreUs · 11/02/2018 17:40

Mine goes on the airer then out every day. If it's raining it goes under the awning/ wind out blind thingy, gets a bit of air so smells nice and dries a bit. If it's sunny it's on the decking.
I've had to snap the washing off the airer when it's frozen on to it, but it's still going out every day. I leave it on the airer in the utility overnight then it just needs a short time in the tumble drier the following day.
And yes maddie it does seem to be a generational thing. My girls never put washing out, even though 2 of them have the space and even a washing line! I'm the same ish age as you too.

IDefinitelyWould · 11/02/2018 17:41

We're in Canada :-) have to admit I have been sniggering a bit at the UK having 'critical cold weather warnings' for -4° 😂

ppeatfruit · 11/02/2018 17:45

Yes It is funny what we get used to. IDefinitely So Alaska wasn't too far out?

Hang out all year round here. Our house would be riddled with damp if we didn't. I do tumble socks and pants (no time for pegging out those) but everything else will go out if I can get it out. Yes it does need finishing off on the airer but it's so much fresher, and less stiff if it's been on the line first. I put a load out today and it was rained and hailed on while we were out and has still come in dry this afternoon.

Sweetpea55 · 11/02/2018 17:58

My mantra is.. If the paths are damp it's a pointless exercize

Mrsjellybum · 11/02/2018 18:07

Wow maybe I need to start putting mine out.

I'm east of England though and rudddy cold at the moment.

Any time I put it out it's still damp by bed time then I have to faf with the airer

maddiemookins16mum · 11/02/2018 18:11

I was a Nanny in Canada (yonks ago) and was gobsmacked by Laundry Rooms. My 'host family' just washed and dried everything indoors all year round (and it was pretty warm in Calgary in Summer).

Bluelady · 11/02/2018 18:14

I thought I was risk averse but go out leaving the washing machine, tumble dryer an dishwasher on. Sometimes all at the same time. I had no idea I lived on the edge.

Anatidae · 11/02/2018 18:16

Hell no.

Snow on the ground until April and can be below freezing well Into late May/early June.

In the summer the dust wrecks stuff.

All goes on an airer where it dries overnight, or the dryer.

PNGirl · 11/02/2018 18:21

No. We have mega hard water and they come back in stiff and horrible. I stick mine on an airer in the unused spare bedroom.

Almostthere15 · 11/02/2018 18:25

I put stuff out if the path is dry, even an hour or two on a blowy day massively reduces the overall drying time. We had a bit of hail today and I'd popped out but things still were almost dry in 4 hours. They wouldn't have dried that fast on the airer, even with the dehumidifier. Sheets and towels really benefit from being out and then a final tumble.

I know what people mean about feeling like you have to do a job twice if you can't guarantee it'll dry completely but it's the difference between being able to do 3 loads rather than 1 here (so much of our stuff can't be tumble dried).

suzy2b · 11/02/2018 18:35

Always in the tumble drier i don't even have a clothes line and i go out with the washing machine and tumble dryer on and what's wrong with washing on sunday and i'm not young (63)

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 11/02/2018 18:39

I’m suspecting IDefinitelyWould and I don’t live too far from each other map-wise. I’m suspecting it’s a long drive though!

And to zzzzz. At -30, if you dropped your frozen washing it would probably break into pieces.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 11/02/2018 18:40

My current weather status:

Do you put your washing out when it's cold?
HildaZelda · 11/02/2018 18:57

No, I think it's pointless. It never dries properly and is still really damp and cold. I just put it on the horse in the spare room.
Oh and I also go out and leave the washing machine on, and the dishwasher and horror of horrors, THE DRYER!

The dryer is in the shed so with any luck if it ever burst into flames that'll be all that burns to the ground.

Kalinka16 · 11/02/2018 19:06

If it’s sunny, windy but cold (and I can for sure bring in before it goes dark), I’ll always try to hang the heavy stuff outside. Jeans, towels etc. We don’t have a dryer and it saves cranking up the heating.

Kalinka16 · 11/02/2018 19:07

I mean cold as in 0-10 degrees, not -35 as per Moose...!!

throwcushions · 11/02/2018 19:12

No maddie not necessarily! I am 29 and have used my tumble drier maybe twice in the last year. It's so environmentally unfriendly and laundry dried outside smells nicer.

DragonsAndCakes · 11/02/2018 19:13

I refuse to hang it up twice, so only put it out if it’ll dry completely.

Interestingly this bbc article lists washing machines as the top cause of house fires by appliances.

PiffIeandWiffle · 11/02/2018 19:14

What use is a smoke alarm if you're not home?

Personally I think that's the best time for the house to burn to the ground.... Grin

goose1964 · 11/02/2018 19:14

As long as it's windy it will dry, I've hung mine out and the wind has died down and I've had rigid washing where it's frozen on the line

Enidthecat · 11/02/2018 19:21

maddie im 22 and hang my washing out wherever possible. Hate our tumble dryer it's inefficient!! Things smell much nice dried outside too.

Loved it when ds was tiny and all his little baby clothes were hung out to dry sad aren't i
