Do you put your washing out when it's cold?

Bright windy day here.
Not damp but coooold.
I was going to put the washing out anyway. I doubt it would dry but it would have got some air through it.
Husband thinks it is a silly idea.
We went out before the machine finished and it's too late now anyway but curious what other people think. Because I live life on the edge like that.

I would if I didn't work full time all the time. No time here for job duplication.

Often have 8-9 loads pw. In summer goes outside if fine. (Not Mon-Fri unless forecast is ace so very rarely).

Combination of tumbler (towels, bedding, linens, etc) and Lakeland dryer. Much of the time.

We are presently in a service flat while house is renovated. Washing and drying is very challenging and that's with someone else doing beds and linens. DH, DS (23), DD (19). DH's shirts have been going to Dry Cleaner Shock. There is a washing machine/dryer combi. It takes forever.p

No, never put it out over winter. I have tried, but it never seems to dry, and comes in damp. Consequently, it was too much effort, and if it was going to sit on the clothes horse or get tumbled dried, it may as well do that from the word go. Having a dehumidifier helps.

morningconstitutional2017 · 11/02/2018 17:09

I must say that if there's the chance of my fetching the washing in and it feels almost as damp as it did before I hung it out then it doesn't seem worth the effort to me, even if it gets a bit of a blow through. In that case it goes straight onto clothes horses in the spare room to be ironed the next day. Why do the job twice? It may smell fresh if it's been outside but it's not such a wonderful difference to make it worth the bother.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 11/02/2018 17:10

I love the smell of colded on washing!

IAmAMonster · 11/02/2018 17:10

I never hang washing out, just put it an airers every morning, i have a dehumidifier and a heated airer.

Something i have always wondered about, people who leave washing out in the rain , like my neighbour, surely it needs washing again? Rain is not clean , i couldnt wear anything that hadnt been washed again!

maddiemookins16mum · 11/02/2018 17:11

Yep, got a whole load dry today. If our decking is dry, then my washing will dry (I do admit to being slightly obsessed with checking the weather to see 'if I can get a wash out').
Our garden has a 'window' of sunshine between 11am and 2pm on a sunny day (in the winter) and I hate drying washing inside.
My rule of thumb is, it will be drier out there for 3 hours than sitting on a clothes horse in the dining room and I hate putting the radiators on just to dry washing. It was cold when I took it in, but dry. Yaaay.

BuzzKillington · 11/02/2018 17:12

We tumble dry everything, all year round.

Pegging out washing seems as archaic as using a mangle to me.

deadringer · 11/02/2018 17:13

If its dry out the washing goes out, no matter how cold it is.

Nanny0gg · 11/02/2018 17:16

Smoke alarms & insurance are key.

What use is a smoke alarm if you're not home?

And insurance won't replace sentimental items. I do know of at least 2 situations where this has happened and it's (to me) not worth the risk.

BackforGood · 11/02/2018 17:16

No. that is what tumble driers are for.
Washing all dry, fluffy and warm and put away in no time.
Life's too short to waste time hanging washing out that is going to still be wet when you bring it in.

Nanny0gg · 11/02/2018 17:17

My mum always used to say that nappies and towels put out to freeze came in fluffy and soft.

Nope. They come in as hard as boards.

Meckity1 · 11/02/2018 17:18

The smell of weed in our street is enough to stop a clock. We don't partake so don't really enjoy laundry smelling of non-grass grass.

Really envy those who can dry their clothes outside.

stickytoffeevodka · 11/02/2018 17:20

Ours goes out in all weathers.

We don't have a tumble drier and I think it's a waste to run one when you can dry your washing for free outside.

ShowMePotatoSalad · 11/02/2018 17:21

Indoor drying with a duhumidifier in room (we run a dehumidifier anyway as our house is prone to damp). Clothes dry really fast this way so they don't have that awful damp smell.

FuzzyCustard · 11/02/2018 17:22

Yes always. I don't have a tumble dryer and the huge majority of the time I don't feel the need for one. Bright, windy days are the best for drying things...and it all smells so fresh too.

RaindropsAndSparkles · 11/02/2018 17:22

My MIL says if there's enough blue sky to make a pair of sailor's trousers it's worth hanging out the washing.

gillybeanz · 11/02/2018 17:22

yes, if there's high winds like here today.
we just double or treble up on the pegs, so it doesn't blow away.
It's just cold and slightly damp when you bring it in and a quick 10 mins in dryer, or woolies on radiator for a bit and it's done.

maddiemookins16mum · 11/02/2018 17:24

No offence intended, but is hanging out washing even in winter (me!) a generational/age thing? I'm 53 by the way. My Niece is 29 and even though she has a lovely garden with room for a long line she dries everything in the drier even during July heatwaves (as rare as they are).
I just think the smell of outside dried clothes in one of those all time best ever aromas.

CecilyP · 11/02/2018 17:25

Do you live down south Cecily?

No, I live in the Highlands of Scotland! We've had a bit of snow on and off today and a bit of hail, interspersed with sunshine. Have managed to get my almost dry unfrozen washing in before the temperature goes down to -1.

IDefinitelyWould · 11/02/2018 17:28

I put washing out in anything down to -5°. It was -35 here on Friday and when I spilt my coffee outside it had frozen into a lump before it hit the floor so not so much in that weather! Looking forward to warm and breezy summer.

ppeatfruit · 11/02/2018 17:30

Blimey IDefintely Where do you live? Alaska? Grin

LidlAngel · 11/02/2018 17:30

Yes, the only time washing doesn't go out is when it's raining. Even an hour or so in the fresh air helps it dry, but then I don't have a tumble dryer and hate having clothes drying in the house.

Bowerbird5 · 11/02/2018 17:31

I used to live there.
Near the sea so it dried if you could get it to stay on the line!
Are you putting it out on a Sunday? Tut tut!

I'm North west England now. We have snow and it has been icy all day. B**y freezing and looks like more snow by the sky.

Bowerbird5 · 11/02/2018 17:32

Oh quick posters that was to Cecily

CecilyP · 11/02/2018 17:33

Can I ask where you live, IDefinitely? Wherever it is I think that even I would succumb to the tumble drier there!
