To buy DD a CD player?

She wants something to play music on but has a reputation for losing smaller devices.

She's about to turn 10 and I thought about an MP3 but I hate downloading things...I find it confusing!

We're in Oz and I have seen some nice, retro looking CD players and I could buy her a few CDs to go with it...and they're cheap and easy to pick up in charity shops too.

Is it a bad idea?

I was told by older DD that premium is worth it but the free version isn't very good....we're in Oz and we never seem to get as good stuff as UK.

Sticky yes but I have to pay for it. I want her to learn that everything's not free.

The free one is fine on tablet, on mobile there’s a few restrictions but on tablet she would have access to the full catalog when on WiFi and just an advert every couple of songs.

Just recently bought DD 11 a CD player. It also has Bluetooth so can stream from phone too. Not that fussed about her up in her room with her phone for hours so CDs are good! It has a radio too.

EastMidsMummy · 11/02/2018 13:15

Why not buy her an 8-track?

Coulddowithanap · 11/02/2018 13:17

DD recently got a cd player for her 11th birthday. She loves it.

I bought a portable cd player when my mp3 player died and i couldnt be bothered to download songs again. The guy in the shop had to go 'out the back' to get it Grin

stickytoffeevodka · 11/02/2018 15:18

Okay, but if you buy her a CD player, who will pay for the CD's? If her, why not give her the option of paying $17 for unlimited music via Spotify, or $15 for one CD a month.

If you're paying, isn't it better to pay out $17 for more music?

Well into her teens, my dd2 listened to loads of audio books on CD, that she borrowed from the library - so free.

notacooldad · 11/02/2018 17:16

I want her to learn that everything's not free.
I would rather teach mine 'why pay for something when you don't have to, take care of your money'

MongerTruffle · 11/02/2018 19:51

I want her to learn that everything's not free.
Surely you should be teaching her to make informed choices as a consumer? Why pay extra for something when you could get the same thing at a lower cost? A Spotify subscription is better value for money than buying physical CDs.

AjasLipstick · 12/02/2018 09:21

Monger an informed choice which I have to fund is not HER informed choice is it? It's mine and I don't know if I want to commit to that extra regular outlay,

Aja use YouTube free Spotify and soundcloud and no money is being spent! No initial outlays and no on going costs ( everytime you buy a cd) now that's being wise with money!

Steeley113 · 12/02/2018 11:10

Just get her an iPod if you’re considering buying her a phone without a sim. I personally love my echo when I’m at home though!

AjasLipstick · 12/02/2018 12:30

Isn't free Spotify full of ads?

No
You can only use it with the iPod touch (which is the only model of the iPod that hasn't been discontinued).

GlitterUnicornsAndAllThatJazz · 12/02/2018 13:13
