To buy DD a CD player?

She wants something to play music on but has a reputation for losing smaller devices.

She's about to turn 10 and I thought about an MP3 but I hate downloading things...I find it confusing!

We're in Oz and I have seen some nice, retro looking CD players and I could buy her a few CDs to go with it...and they're cheap and easy to pick up in charity shops too.

Is it a bad idea?

CD player. That way you know there's no midnight internet use / playing games on the tablet, as that can be out of her room.

notacooldad · 10/02/2018 15:21

CD player definitely. Then when she's older she can play the CDs in her car and reminisce over her collection from when she's younger
I didn't think many cars had cds In them now never mind when this DD is older!!
Are CD players a retro thing now, you know like people started buying vinyl and records a while ago?
Get one if you must but if she has a tablet and a speaker thats all she needs.
Incidentally I keep a palm sized speaker in my work bag and another one in my rucksack as music via YouTube, Spotify, Amazon, radio, SoundCloud etc is so accessible
Cds just add clutter and often there are tracks that are weak and rubbish.so you are paying for things that you don't necessary loke or want.

missyB1 · 10/02/2018 15:22

RaininSummer I think that’s the one my ds has.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 10/02/2018 15:28

I can’t get my iPad to play music while I’m doing anything else, it’s bloody annoying, but I think you can with most other tablets can’t you?

I wouldn’t get her a CD player, no, I’d get her an iPod or something and a combined stand & speaker. Tell her it’s not to be removed from the stand because if she loses it, it will not be replaced.

My dd10 has phone/tablet as well as spotify premium to download music, which she does but she still asked for a CD player for christmas and she absolutely loves it. What does your dd want?

AjasLipstick · 11/02/2018 00:00

annie well there's the issue....she wants it to use when on car journeys or sometimes, she has to come to work with me...and it's then she wants it.

Just asked my 13 year old who said "Why does she want some early 2000s tecnology....just get her a phone but don't let her have the sim"

Hmm Slippery slope? I didn't want to get younger DD a phone till she was 11 or 12...but I want to encourage her love of music.

CD players still exist? 😲

GrockleBocs · 11/02/2018 00:27

We're a tech adopting house but dd 11 has several cd players to listen to. She likes that format. She could listen to music on a variety of other devices but doesn't.

BackforGood · 11/02/2018 00:32

Of course YANBU
(Although you can probably get one for free on whatever your local version of Freecycle is, going by the posts on this thread) Hmm

Of course cars have CD players. Well, 3 of the 4 I've driven in the last 3 months have, one is too old and has a tape deck.

My teens have CDs (yes, and phones and music on their laptops, etc). At 10 it's great as they can have a pile of CDs in their rooms and still listen when you might be restricting the time they spend on the internet. They can also listen on car journeys etc.

safariboot · 11/02/2018 02:30

CD player with bluetooth connectivity? Best of both worlds. Pair it with the tablet for big sound from downloads and streams, or play CDs that could be gifts or second-hand bargains.

Even though sales have declined I think most music is still released on CD. Lotta second-hand cars on the road that have a CD player but don't have any fancy tech.

SuperBeagle · 11/02/2018 02:34

I wouldn't, simply because it's not cost-effective. The CD player itself might not be expensive, but CDs are still selling at $15+ each in Australia, making it a very expensive venture when compared to free downloading.

ArthurDentsTowel · 11/02/2018 02:42

My Dd asked for a CD player for her 12th birthday - they do seem to be retro cool now for some. Something satisfying about having an album in a physical format, and haven't found it more expensive than downloading an album online tbh. Don't think many of her friends have one though.

She's nearly 14 now and still loves it, but she also has a phone and listens to a lot of her music via Spotify. She plugs her phone into the CD player and listens to her playlists that way in her room.

I brought my old tape deck out of storage the other day along with some old tapes - my kids are fascinated with the old fashioned technology! Makes me feel ancient...

TealStar · 11/02/2018 02:51

I would buy her a decent Bluetooth speaker and a pair of headphones. She can then stream all her music through her iPad via iTunes or, better still, Spotify. You can get a monthly subscription for the price of a CD or better still a family one for £15. No need for phone if she has iPad, although the iPad will be bulkier.

My dds both had CDplayers but didn’t touch them once the started streaming music via devices.

Unihorn · 11/02/2018 02:55

DSD is 7 and had one for Christmas with a pile.of audiobooks. It's handy for long journeys as we're not subjected to David Walliams shite. I'm baffled that people find the idea so odd!

PrincessHairyMclary · 11/02/2018 03:05

If you buy cds from Amazon you get the MP3 versions free so she could play them on her tablet too

Godowneasy · 11/02/2018 03:21

The Amazon Echo or Dot are brilliant!!! Can't believe everyone doesn't have one. So much fun.

AjasLipstick · 11/02/2018 03:24

I think my issue with Spotify is that I am basically comitting to paying 17 dollars a month just for DD to listen to music. In the old days, if I wanted a record I had to save for it out of my pocket money....now I have to pay the same amount monthly? It's galling.

DH and I don't listen to much music other than what we fancy on youtube....older DD same.

AjasLipstick · 11/02/2018 03:26

With a CD player, if she wants an album then she's going to need to pay something towards it and then learn the value....if I'm just paying monthly then she has no awareness of what things cost.

My kids were given a set of David Williams books on CD for Christmas just gone. We listen to it on long journeys. Car still has a CD player.

I still listen to my CDs in the dvd player. I can't believe the CD negativity on here.

Go for the free account with the adverts. I use the premium but the free one is fine, just an advert every couple of songs.

notacooldad · 11/02/2018 10:52

If you don't want to use Spotify for streaming just use YouTube.
I have a couple of channels that im subscribed to for different genres of music
Its free.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 11/02/2018 10:55

It's up to you but is music still released on CD? I'm in my 50s and haven't used a CD player for years. I've got one in my car but it doesn't work.

MissionItsPossible · 11/02/2018 11:56

@AjasLipstick you don't have to pay for it, you can have a free account with adverts. Deezer is a similar app that works the same

stickytoffeevodka · 11/02/2018 12:09

But for $17 she's getting unlimited music, that she can listen to whenever/wherever she wants.

Whereas her $15/CD only buys her what, 12 songs?
