To say smoking does look cool?

Yes, I know inhaling thousands upon thousands of cancerous chemicals definitely isn't cool!

But there's something about some people lighting up a cig and looking into the distance that looks rather cool and 'suave' to me Grin

I always picture having a deep conversation with a mysteriously handsome but dark horse of a person, looking far into the distance as they respond to my dilemma "That's life, Soph" or some other talk that included clever sayings that I can never think to use at the right moment.

It looks cool.

My executive assistant aunty use to look very classy sitting with her legs crossed and smoking a cig, whilst listening to my dilemmas
I just want to put it out there that I've never so much as taken a puff of a ciggy Blush

It can do. I think the French pull it off.

It's also slightly rebellious and annoys the type of people who deserve to be annoy which I like.

Vaping is extremely uncool. Do it properly or don't do it at all.

MuseumOfCurry · 10/02/2018 13:22

Eek. When I see beautiful young girls smoking, I just want to snatch them out of their fingers.

I think it works well in certain film contexts, but IRL I find it repulsive. I cannot abide the smell. I could never be romantically involved with a smoker.

Pearlsaringer · 10/02/2018 13:25

Depends very much who is doing it and under what circs. Hollywood screen idol in fictional context, yes. Anyone in rl, never.

JacintaJones · 10/02/2018 13:25

When I see beautiful young girls drinking coke and eating haribo I want to snatch it out of their hands. It doesnt even look cool.

Sugar caused more health issues than smoking ever has or will.

IfNot · 10/02/2018 13:27

Gawd, YES! It's BAD FOR YOU. And like electric blue eyeliner and Bad Men, it really should be packed in when you hit your 30's.
And I watched my Dad die too, and no it wasn't nice.
But dammit.....Lauren Bacall lighting a fag in To Have or To Have Not..COOL!

JacintaJones · 10/02/2018 13:28

Smoking looks cool on the very young, very beautiful or very charismatic.

These people are hardly in need of a prop to look better than the rest of us though....

As for the smell, I quite like it.

Fekko · 10/02/2018 13:28

I think watching someone eat with chopsticks can look cool. But only if they are not pinging prawns across the table or dropping clumps of rice into their lap.

GummyGoddess · 10/02/2018 13:30

No, it looks dirty and stinky.

I remember cutting up my Nana's cigarettes one day, went through several packets chopping them in half when I was about 10. She went bananas, told my mum who told me off. Then in the car afterwards my mum took me out for a treat as she was thrilled that my Nana wouldn't be able to smoke for a little while as she worried about her.

SheldonCooper77 · 10/02/2018 13:39

Ahh, I miss smoking. I used to be cool.
Now I look like a twat with a fruit flavoured vape! Grin

MuseumOfCurry · 10/02/2018 13:50

Sure. I think possibly Haribo can be part of a healthy person's life in a way that smoking can't, though. I don't know anyone who has had a 'moderate' relationship with cigarettes for a great number of years.

Chrys2017 · 10/02/2018 13:57

People who look "cool" anyway, such as film stars, also look cool when smoking (or picking their noses, or scratching their butts).
For the rest of us, no.

JacintaJones · 10/02/2018 14:00

Really Curry?

I suppose people move in different circles but most of my frirndship group are social smokers.

MuseumOfCurry · 10/02/2018 14:03

I can't say I know many smokers, social or otherwise. Just one (she's hardened, and committed).

JacintaJones · 10/02/2018 14:08

I don't consider hardened or comitted smoking to be beneficial or becoming.

I live in Chester though and most young(ish) people in their 20s/30s will partake on a night out/drinks at a friends etc and then not touch a fag for a week or two.

I don't think its as addictive to people in higher socioeconomic groups who use cigs for enjoyment rather than escapism.

Thats just my theory though.
Could be shite for all I know.

n0ne · 10/02/2018 14:10

Well, my Dad died of COPD from a lifetime of chainsmoking and I still think it looks cool

MuseumOfCurry · 10/02/2018 14:15

I think your theory is probably partially sound, but in the case of the young and the beautiful I suspect they might fall prey to the weight management aspect of smoking as they enter their 30s and 40s.

To be in your 40s and trying to give up smoking and control your weight, well, that's just shite. Statistically, you're fucked.

CauliflowerBalti · 10/02/2018 14:16

Don’t smoke, never have, never will. Hate it.

But smoking can be verrrrry sexy and cool.

Precisely because it is bad and wrong.

Cautious, sensible people don’t smoke. Reckless risk takers do.

Reckless risk takers can be very sexy.

But it only works as a signal of badness on an attractive person. Mere mortals just look a bit dim.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 10/02/2018 14:22

Weeelll, I smoke and have neither yellow fingers, brown teeth, a mouth like a dog's arse or crow's feet.

Neither am I overweight, pasty, impoverished or lacking in the brain department. I don't think I stink like an ashtray either as when I mention I smoke to people I don't know they are always surprised.

As to whether I look cool or not?

I look cool as fuck. Obviously.

MuseumOfCurry · 10/02/2018 14:25

How old are you, Hairy?

ILikeyourHairyHands · 10/02/2018 14:27
JacintaJones · 10/02/2018 14:31

Good for you Hairy.

How's your diet in general?
Not to be nosy I just think that good habits in one sphere of life mitigate not so great habits in others.

Of course if you inhale mcdonalds and frozen carbs/cakes every day I'll get my coat...

ILikeyourHairyHands · 10/02/2018 14:31

And I know lots of middle class, middle-aged profwssional smokers who fit none of the above profiles.

user1485342611 · 10/02/2018 14:31

Cool? Are you serious?

Desperately puffing away as the bus is pulling up at the stop, before throwing the rest of the cigarette on the ground.
Huddling in skanky smelling groups outside pubs and restaurants, their hands trembling with the cold as they take another drag.
Croaky voiced and wrinkly long before their non smoking peers.
Hanging around the lane behind the office with a fag between their fingers and ash blowing onto their clothes.
Obviously blowing smoke over the food of other annoyed diners in restaurant and pub gardens.

Nope, nothing cool looking about them. Grubby, desperate and often inconsiderate are more the words that spring to mind.

littleHen84 · 10/02/2018 14:34

Op the lighting up and reversing the car with a flat hand on the steering wheel is def sexy! I 100% agree!! Not odd at all
