We've been with BT for 9 years. Never really thought about changing tbh. But, our 5 year old SMART Samsung TV has turned out not to be so smart, as we can no longer access i player etc through it. We also quite fancy having Netflix. We have an Amazon Fire Stick which wont work with our Samsung, although it will work on other tvs in our house annoyingly! So rather than splash out on something like Chromecast, we thought we would look at other options, one of which is to have phone, broadband and tv from Virgin. We only have phone and internet from BT currently and pay £170 per quarter. It would cost us £38 per month i.e. £360 per year plus a £20 installation fee for a 12 month contract with Virgin. It seems like we could really save money and get more bang for our buck. The only snag is that our phone line where the router would be is the other side of the room to the tv. Can this be connected via wireless? Please let me know what you thin of Virgin! I know some people swear they are the devils spawn, but then people also say that about BT and SKY.

I've been with virgin since they were originally cable and wireless , that's going back a few years, they even commented on my email address which is ntl !
Had no problem with them. Had an issue sorted. I phoned them regarding my services to what I was paying, explained I was shopping around 🤥
Got huge discount and new box etc. I pay £55 a month for tv, phone and boardband. Sometimes the internet freezes but I just reboot it.
The phone line comes in at the front if the house and the telly is at the back. Wires all hidden.

Nanasueathome · 08/02/2018 14:51

Virgin have never been cable and wireless

My own, and my sister’s, experience with VM is to not touch them with a barge pole

georgeoutside · 08/02/2018 14:54

Yes. Cable and wireless > NTL > virgin

Cutesbabasmummy · 08/02/2018 14:54

Oooh lots of opinions! We sadly don't have a playstation and the only reason I'm not up for a Chromecast is that I had a google and it threw up lots of issues with Samsung and with our model TV in particular! I've also updated my software on the TV but on the i player website it lists an whole load of "older" Samsung and Sony TVs which it no longer supports! Might check out Sky as well. Has anyone managed to weasel a better deal with either Sky or Virgin by threatening to leave them when the contract is up?

We were with Virgin about 6 years ago and they were a NIGHTMARE. The internet never worked and neither did their resolutions. We signed back up to Virgin last year because after dropping all the channels we found it was cheaper than Sky so only have their internet and basic TV. However, the internet only works in one half of the house. The router is by the TV in the lounge but you struggle to pick up a decent signal in the kitchen (across the entrance hall) and it doesn't work at all upstairs unless you're in the bedroom directly above the lounge.

Also, DH got a call from the last week (legit call/number) and they asked if we wanted to upgrade to their XL package for an extra £6 a month. When DH asked how much the bill would then come to a month they said £65...we only pay £42pm so it wasn't £6 it was actually £23 extra. When DH questioned this they faltered and thanked him for his time Hmm

We have just moved to Virgin from Sky as Sky’s broadband was dreadful and they could not seem to fix it. The broadband is much better with Virgin. Tv wise, I cannot really tell any significant difference. The fact that sky is moving away from dishes to drive everything through their broadband would concern me as their broadband couldn’t hold up to checking mumsnet without crashing.

tillytrotter1 · 08/02/2018 14:55

We used to have everything, phone, TV and mobiles on Virgin and they were great but when we moved 7 1/2 years ago we had to change the TV to Sky as Virgin doesn't cable this area, we also changed the Broadband to them too, gradually the mobiles were changed. Recently we have returned to Virgin for the mobiles, deals etc, and the problem occurs when you need to ring them, the call centres are obviously not in the UK and we've had awful problems making ourselves understood, there's a script and if your problem doesn't fit then it causes problems.

Coulddowithanap · 08/02/2018 14:56

They are ok, just very expensive for us, currently paying around £70 for phone internet and TV and that's not even all the channels.. I really should call them to get it reduced!

YetAnotherUser · 08/02/2018 14:58

I've been with virgin for years, frankly they're shite, but I had a few months with BT who were even worse.

I don't have virgin TV or phone line, just broadband these days. The speed/value for money compared to any of the competitors is streets ahead.

goose1964 · 08/02/2018 14:58

We found Virgin to be good, we had only one period when our line died and that was due to flooding. We left because of a customer service error, and when we tried to leave they changed the date they say we cancelled the contract. Otherwise they were fine

Nanasueathome · 08/02/2018 15:02

I worked for Cable and Wireless
I can assure you C&W did not become Virgin/NTL/encom
Cable and Wireless were a global company
They are actually owned by Vodafone now

georgeoutside · 08/02/2018 15:06

Cable and wireless DID sell off the cable part of their business to NTL which eventually became Virgin Media.

SwarmOfCats · 08/02/2018 15:09

Virgin have been great! I switched to Sky a few years ago because they had a good deal on - had nothing but problems (too long to describe here). It was so bad that I went through the communications ombudsman; Sky had to apologise, refund and compensate. Back with virgin again now, and can’t complain!

sparklepops123 · 08/02/2018 15:09

With virgin and really need to move. Their prices have gone up EVERY year , when we got a new computer we took out some type of tech insurance with them then after a time we cancelled. Only realised a long time later we were still paying the extra, they denied we ever cancelled and refused to reimburse.

SparklyMagpie · 08/02/2018 15:11

RadioGaGoo agree with you 100% on that

I'm thinking about switching.

Costs a fortune for fuck all and the customer service is absolutely shocking

I'd never recommend

NoMoreUsernames · 08/02/2018 15:14

They're fine until you want to leave when their staff are happy to hurl abuse at you down the phone. Oh and the constant price hikes. Never again. I just have now TV and netflix now, no contracts other than broadband.

Doctroo · 08/02/2018 15:19

Been with Virgin since 1998 when they were Telewest. So 20 years. My email address is still blueyonder.co.uk.

Never really any problems, and I have recently upgraded to TiVo, and th engineer replaced my modem for free.

Pay £46 a month for phone, telly, internet. All work fine. I don't have a HD TV (an old Sony Trinitron - picture better than HD IMO) and am not fussed about Netflix.

SellFridges · 08/02/2018 15:19

Their customer service is sometimes a bit weird, but I have always managed to get a good deal. We are in a cable area so we’d be stupid to go with anyone else to be honest.

Tink2007 · 08/02/2018 15:19

We were with Sky and moved to Virgin last year. It was quite frankly the worst year in terms of quality and customer service. It was so bad we paid to end our contract and go back to Sky.

SparklyMagpie · 08/02/2018 15:28

NoMoreUsernames I also mainly use Now tv and Netflix

liz70 · 08/02/2018 15:40

VM are a bit meh, but we live in an area with pretty crappy cable connection no matter who you're signed up with, so there's little point us switching. If I were you, if your BT BB is okay, I would stick with them and get a non smart TV plus Chromecast, Youtv, Roku or similar. We have a 10+ years old Panasonic non smart tv, plus a Chromecast. With the CC we can watch on our television anything from iPlayer, All4, my5 and ITVHub or STVplayer, plus any other compatible app e.g. Youtube, Netflix if we subscribed, other tv stores like TalkTalk, Curzon, etc. for film rentals. Spotify etc. There are loads of compatible tv, film and radio apps plus you can also cast your own stuff to the tv. Best £30 we've spent in a long time.

usualGubbins · 08/02/2018 15:42

Been with Sky for ages - TV, phone, internet and now mobile. Customer service has always been spot on, no hassle, everything works well. I've heard some real horror stories about Virgin, but I would say if they stopped sending me letters telling me how brilliant it would be if I changed to them they might be a bit cheaper!

CcleanSheet9 · 08/02/2018 16:07

Virgin Media is branded Virgin, but it is owned/run by a company called Liberty Global

It is made up of all the previous cables companies in the UK

fizzytonicplease · 08/02/2018 16:30

Been with virgin for a few months and so far so good, we pay £25 a month for basic tv, phone and broadband, best deal we could get.

ReinettePompadour · 08/02/2018 16:38

When its working Virgin is great. The problem is that when theyre not working theyre down for hours and sometimes days. We are only in February and we have had Virgin down/offline 4 days this year so far.
