Gideon Bibles in school

DS12 came home with a bible today presented by the Gideons. It's New Testament and Psalms. Why are school children getting free bibles and who is paying for them?

My AIBU is why aren't they giving out other faith books .... or, from an atheist viewpoint (me) , why are they giving them out at all?

Motheroffourdragons

That's strange, so there are books older than the bible with similar stories rehashed in the bible?
Yes a lot of the Bible stories are just reworked from older religions/traditions/cultures.

The whole story of Jesus from the virgin birth, mortal woman and divine father, the 3 wise men, water into wine, crucifixion and resurrection 3 days later... Everything about him is taken from prior stories of Greek, Persian, Roman and Egyptian deities hundreds of years before Jesus was supposedly born. So if your going to teach anything it is better to teach the original stories rather than the Chinese whispers the bible became.

Jesus taught us to love one another. This has led to some Christian people achieving great things.

Prison reform in Victorian times was led by Christians eg Elizabeth Fry.

The movement to end slavery ( Wilberforce)

Sunday schools which led to education for all.

Many of the children's charities like Barnado's and Action for Children were started by Christians.

The trades unions had their roots in the Christian non conformist movement.

Democracy itself stemmed from Christian thought and ideals.

What about Arthur Guinness who founded the Guinness Brewing Co. in 1755. He learned the art of brewing from his father and succeeded in establising a flourishing company. Arthur, a committed Christian, used his influence and wealth to help others.

Douglass Macmillan who founded the cancer charity was a Christian.

I could go on.

I don't think that the Gideons are going to do too much harm by giving out their New Testaments, and if even a few kids who read bits of it decide to put something back into society for other people, it will be well worth it.

Jesus taught us to love one another No one had ever thought of that before? Confused

Prison reform in Victorian times was led by Christians eg Elizabeth Fry Most people were Christian back then, it was obligatory.

The movement to end slavery (Wilberforce) He actually went against the Bible which supports slavery.

Sunday schools which led to education for all Yip they had all the money, I wonder where they got it from?

Many of the children's charities like Barnado's and Action for Children were started by Christians Again, most people were Christian back then, it was obligatory.

The trades unions had their roots in the Christian non conformist movement Bla Bla, see above.

Democracy itself stemmed from Christian thought and ideals Poof god clicked his fingers and there was light. He just forgot to create stars first DOH!

I could go on...

The Gideons should stop trying to force their views on young children, we dont live in a theocracy anymore. Thank god FFS

They hand people a free book. They don't beat their interlocuters with it.

The Gideons should stop trying to force their views on young children

So do you stop your children watching the television, going on the internet (safely), talking to vegetarians (lighthearted) reading any kind of religious text, or basically anyone whose views are different to yours?

Children don't need to be kept away from different viewpoints, what are you scared of.
