'Best Day Of Your Life'

AIBU to say I find it a bit depressing when people claim their wedding day, or the day their baby was born is the best day of their life? Isn't that just saying actually being married or having a child is just an anticlimax? I haven't done either so I can't really judge, but in your experience is it true?

I’ve always said this re wedding day. My wedding day was lovely but it was so busy I can’t call it the best day ever as I didn’t get time to truly take it all in.
The occasion me and dh got engaged was one of my most favourite moments ever.
I don’t believe in one or two best days, I’ve got loads of best days and hopefully there are many more to come. Smile

I kind of agree. Getting married was pretty good.. but I preferred the honeymoon! I think that mentally I was already married already - the wedding just confirmed it to everyone else. It was nice to see everyone though and have a party. If I didn't have to pay I would happily live that day over again and again.

Giving birth .. flipping hurt both times. Holding them for the first time was amazing moment. But I wouldn't want to relive that day again and again due to the sheer exertion and pain of child birth. First smile, first laugh, first proper chat - all were great and special too. Those are the days I would relive again and again.

When my daughter survived risky open heart surgery at 14 was the best day of my life.

Carouselfish · 06/02/2018 00:59

Happiest day of my life wasn't having a baby, meeting my long lost Dad, having my dream holiday or anything like that.
It was buying placemats.
I'd just moved into a flat with a boyfriend. First person I'd ever lived with. First real, true love. He was at work. I was shopping in a department store for the last few little bits to make our place a home, to get it looking amazing as a surprise before he got back.
Everything was ahead of me and everything was possible. I truly believed I was on my way to the life I'd always wanted.
Suffice to say, disillusionment followed! I don't think I'll ever be that purely optimistic again!

TossDaily · 06/02/2018 02:11

The best day of my life was spent in Amsterdam. Leisurely breakfast, walk in light snow to Van Gogh Museum, coffee and apple cake, reading and napping in front of a roaring fire, sex, good dinner, red wine, spliff.

I mean, I really can't top it for a blissful day.

The days my sons were born were momentous, amazing, exhilarating, joyful - but also scary, painful, dramatic - I can look back in hindsight and call them the best day, but that's because I know it all turned out okay.

Wouldn't want to go back and do either day again - but I'd do that Sunday in Amsterdam on repeat Smile

My children being born, well nothing could compare to that.

The best day of my life? Well that wasn't when I escaped a lifetime of abuse because for years after it ruined me. It was when I knew I could move on an heal from it. I could truly live and just be.

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 06/02/2018 02:56

YANBU.

I found the best days of my life so far were university...that's my life as ME though.

Being a parent isn't something I consider a personal acheivement. Anyone who is fertile can have a baby...of course not everyone is a good parent but that's not something I want or need to feel proud of.

I am sometimes proud of my DC and of course I adore them and think them WONDERFUL but it's separate to who I am...myself as a woman is not bound up in that.

frozenlake · 06/02/2018 03:16

Getting married and following honeymoon was the best time of my life. My DC being born was the worst day of my life by a country mile, nine years on the worst of the truama has passed but the best I can say is we all made it through the day alive.

Tormundsbeard · 06/02/2018 03:21

Wedding days and children being born are obviously special and unforgettable, and the beginning of new chapters in your life.

Most enjoyable day for me (so far) was a day on honeymoon when we went to a small beach you could only get to by boat, swam and sunbathed and felt truly happy.
Most enjoyable years for me were being at University and discovering who I was, making new friends and laughing loads.

I love being a parent and have hundreds of happy memories involving the children, but agree with CheapSausages, 'best day of your life' for some reason brings up memories of my own.

YABU

The day my son was born and my wedding day were the best day of my life. I can’t really see anything topping those tbh 🤷🏽‍♀️

My longed for baby finally making his way into the world and being handed to me for the first time and then marrying my best friend in front of all of our amazing family and friends (inc said little boy as we did it backwards)

Yeah they will take some beating

HorseDentist · 06/02/2018 07:07

The best day of my life was when I finally got to see SClub7 aged 25 Blush . There was lots of warm friendship, a few too many cocktails and so much fun and freedom after a very long period of serious depression.

The day my child was born was traumatic. Nothing else.

Rainboho · 06/02/2018 07:12

Wedding day was absolutely not the best day of my life. I should have walked away, not down the aisle and I bloody knew it.

Births were painful and knackering. Instead I have lovely memories of wonderful days snuggling with babies on the sofa. I think seeing my incredibly shy DD get up on stage in a play at primary school even though she was absolutely petrified, was one of the best days of my life.

And spending a morning in a coffee shop with my now DP whilst we confessed our feelings for each other. That was another best day.

PeonyTruffle · 06/02/2018 07:21

Horse

That’s amazing. I love S Club! Grin

MrsPreston11 · 06/02/2018 07:30

OP has clearly just said that to sit back and light a fire and watch the flames.

Our wedding day was perfection and not a thing I’d change about it. Truly the most wonderful day.

And giving birth to your children is also very hard to beat. (Exceptions of course for traumatic/difficult births but luckily I haven’t suffered too badly)

The love you feel upon finally meeting the little persons who’s filled your every waking thought for months is amazing.

Bythepath · 06/02/2018 07:38

The day (well week really) I got engaged is the the one i would like to do on repeat. We were walking in Snowdonia, the weather was crisp and clear, just the 2 of us, we were staying in a lovely B&B, going to the pub for tea, just really enjoying a week of chatting and being outside which is what we both love.
I enjoyed my wedding and have 3 children who I have lots of lovely days with but until now that week was amazing.

x2boys · 06/02/2018 07:39

Well it's subjective isnt it, the actual labours and giving birth were pretty horrible but it was an amazing experience seeing both my children for the first time and my life did change for ever ,suddenly you are responsible for a this tiny human being so yes i would say they were the best days of MY life .

mintich · 06/02/2018 07:43

My child's birth was the second best day. The best day was a week later when I was told she could leave NICU and come home. I was absolutely delighted!!

JellySlice · 06/02/2018 07:44

It would seem that for many of us the best day of our lives was a day on which we had a massive dose of oxytocin flood our bodies. But that's ok because it really does feel good, whatever caused it.

CrabappleBiscuit · 06/02/2018 07:44

Wedding day, best day of my life, no. It was fun and nice and definitely up there on days I remember..

Thinking about it maybe I need to work on a best day.

I think it was realising that after months of awful depression my dh was finally coming out of it and we had an entirely normal weekend...

scaredofthecity · 06/02/2018 07:45

But my wedding day was the best day of my life, if you've not been married I wouldn't expect you to get it.
To have all the people you love and care about the most all there to celebrate with you just cant be topped. People make an effort for weddings that they just don't for anything else.
The day DS was born was definately special, but also incredibly scary, painful and overwhelming. I was properly in shock so didn't get this 'wave' that everyone talks about.

Ifailed · 06/02/2018 07:47

Surely the best day of anyone's life is the day they were born, as without it nothing else could have happened to them?

StarWarsFanatic · 06/02/2018 23:49

I loved our wedding. But my favourite days are days were I spend the day watching TV or films in my PJs with DH. Or we take DNs to the zoo. Shopping trips with my DSis. DH & I decorating our new home. Concerts & festivals with friends. Etc.

Getting married is probably the best thing I've done, but I had to spend half the day without DH and there was a lot of stress.

EmpireVille · 07/02/2018 00:10

Well, giving birth was definitely the best moment and the hours that followed were utterly magical.

The day as a whole was clearly not the best as there was a great deal of shouting, wailing and crying.

When looked on as a whole, I do think my wedding day was the best entire day because there were no bad bits and it was just full of lovely moments from start to finish.

But that feeling in the hospital room tin he early hours when it seemed the whole world was asleep except me and my brand new tiny baby, oh man, nothing comes close.

Triskaidekaphilia · 07/02/2018 00:52

Our wedding day was lovely but by no means the 'best' day. In fact some of the days were probably better as it was just the two of us. I feel like there will be even better days ahead, the best day may be the birth of our DC or something else but I feel it's definitely still to come.
