To really hate it when atheists take the piss out of those who believe in God?

sharkirasharkira · 05/02/2018 14:10

I have several FB friends who are obvious atheists, and often share things about science and/or about the concept of God being stupid -basically saying that anyone who believes in God is an idiot, a child (with an 'imaginary friend') or someone who has no idea about science and the universe.

I get that not everyone has faith in a higher being/religion etc but why the childish name calling and the necessity to take the piss out of those who do? It just really irritates me! Belief in God and an appriciation of science are not mutually exclusive. I find it quite offensive that people who don't know my personal beliefs are essentially saying that if I believe in God I must be an idiot or a child who believes in magical sky fairies, because theres no possible way I can believe in evolution (for example) and be an agnostic.

Aibu to think that people should just let others believe what they want to believe without mocking them for it, even if they don't agree with it?

Qvar the links you provided don't prove or disprove anything, other than man's ability to behave utterly abhorrently towards his fellow man, and human frailty.

stevie69 · 05/02/2018 15:08

Nah, some Christians are utter dicks. Just like some atheists

Took the words right out of my mouth.

dworky · 05/02/2018 15:08

I also hate it when religious people look down on, patronise and insult those of us who do not believe.

People can be dicks.

BustopherJones · 05/02/2018 15:08

I'm an atheist, although I would say we can't ultimately know either way. My position isn't so much that I have a clear and firm conviction that there is no god, but that if there is a god, then they don't deserve worship.

There are many complicated and well thought out philosophical arguments for the existence of a creator god. Some very intelligent people believe there is a god, just as there are plenty of people who blindly follow a religion with questionable morals.

Plenty of people are brought up without faith, though, and don't thoroughly interrogate theirs or others' beliefs. They are just as naive as believers who don't question.

There are also plenty of anti science atheists. I've met a bunch of atheist antivaxers.

NovemberWitch · 05/02/2018 15:10

I was brought up very religious. But one day I suddenly thought ‘Do I want to live in a society and a world controlled by the church?’ And the slow wave of horror that overtook me as I thought of all the restrictions, exclusions, EA language and oppressions that would be the consequence washed away my belief in it as a good thing.
Same for any autocratic system imo.

derxa · 05/02/2018 15:10

I've also noticed that all the sarcastic comments about 'sky fairies' seem to be aimed at Christians on here. Suspect these posters wouldn't dare to make the same comment to a Silk or Muslim's face as they know exactly how bad they'd sound. Exactly

GhostWriter666 · 05/02/2018 15:11

Sillydoggy..I agree the judging works both ways. My ds came home crying at 6...why...because he was told by Christian children he couldn't celebrate Christmas because he wasn't Christian.

It doesn't justify people been called stupid etc...but it could be a reason it begins. Eg...1 Christian tells atheist they are going to he'll for not believing. That atheist tells 2 Christians they are stupid for believing and god doesn't exist. Those 2 christians each tell 2 atheists that they're wrong and so on and so on....where does it end??

EdmundCleverClogs · 05/02/2018 15:13

You have absolutely no idea what I'd say

Ok, what would you say? Would you instantly believe me, without evidence? Even though basic logic and science says otherwise? I fail to see how anyone wouldn’t take the scenario I have just given as either made up or someone who had convinced themselves of nonsense. Even if they were polite enough to hide it.

stevie69 · 05/02/2018 15:14

People can be dicks.

Yep, those of faith and those with none. We'are all fucking c**ts at times Wink

NovemberWitch · 05/02/2018 15:15

It ends when you watch a Christian grabbing any and every opportunity not to go to Heaven. What’s so bad about Paradise? Don’t you really believe in it?

ReanimatedSGB · 05/02/2018 15:16

I'm quite happy to say that all religions are bullshit, thanks. Because they are.
I think the reason Christianity gets the most bashing is because Christianity is the myth system whose devotees spend so much time trying to inflict it on everyone else. You don't get many Hindus or Muslims banging on doors trying to sell you their imaginary friend. (I live in an extremely diverse area, so if evangelising was a big thing for non-Christian outfits, then I would have expected a few more leaflets through the door, at least.)

Puzzledandpissedoff · 05/02/2018 15:18

I also hate it when religious people look down on, patronise and insult those of us who do not believe

So do I - but the human condition being what it is, some of us who believe can get it wrong just as much as anyone else

Backenette · 05/02/2018 15:18

Are they mocking the religion or the person with the religion?

Because there’s a big difference.

Mocking a person individually is often bad form (exceptions made for say fundamentalists who deny women basic rights.) it’s not on to attack a person for holding a religion. It’s not ok to discriminate against someone for holding a religion.

At the same time, mocking an ideology is not only ok but I think quite necessary in an open society. It’s perfectly ok to lampoon a religion just as it is to mock and dogma, concept or idea. No religion can be exempt from mockery - that way lies theocracy.

So are your friends saying ‘sharkira is stupid because she’s a Christian/Muslim/‘ or are they mocking the ideology?

Qvar · 05/02/2018 15:19

And the lack of godly intervention? I suppose that proves that Atheists Are All Wrong too? Lol

Youshallnotpass · 05/02/2018 15:19

It would be slightly more believable if there wasn't so many different religions worshipping entirely different gods.

Christian - Jehovah (Yahweh)
Judaism - Same as above, but no Messiah yet
Muslims - Allah, one and only god - no trinity
Hinduism - Tons of gods

and so on, which one of the above is right?

This is part of the reason why Atheists Hmm at religion

stevie69 · 05/02/2018 15:19

Ok, what would you say? Would you instantly believe me, without evidence?

I might not instantly believe you, no. I'd be interested in finding out why you thought that way. And, if your arguments were sufficiently convincing then yes, I'd believe you. I wouldn't ask for evidence. My belief system isn't evidence driven Blush

OurMiracle1106 · 05/02/2018 15:20

I don’t believe in God. But I do go into one specific church if it’s open and pray but not to god but to “those who have gone before”
Ie those I’ve loved and lost.

So long as you’re beliefs don’t harm others then I don’t judge anyone based on what they do or don’t believe in.

God/heaven/ghosts etc aren’t proven facts and if it makes it easier to accept the death of a loved one or to face your own mortality then so long as it harms no one one else then you should leave them be.

JassyRadlett · 05/02/2018 15:20

I wouldn't dream of saying atheism is a load of rubbish or is for people who can't see beyond their own noses, but some atheists and humanists seem to think it is acceptable to say this type of thing about people of faith.

Yes, it’s not nice. Part of the problem, though, is that not all people of religious faith take that approach.

stevie69 · 05/02/2018 15:20

and so on, which one of the above is right?

All of them; they're variations on a theme.

Valerrie · 05/02/2018 15:20

I'm ludicrous because I don't believe in something that has never been proved, that has never "reached out" to help me in times of severe need, lets such atrocities happen in the world, has such disgusting views about fellow members of the human race and was made up by men in tents as a way of controlling people, and I'M ludicrous?

OK then Grin

nextDayDelivery · 05/02/2018 15:20

"I've also noticed that all the sarcastic comments about 'sky fairies' seem to be aimed at Christians on here. Suspect these posters wouldn't dare to make the same comment to a Silk or Muslim's face as they know exactly how bad they'd sound."

That sounds like it was lifted from the Daily Mail.

I don't know much about Sikhism (I assume that's what was meant) but I'll happily put across my argument for why islam is as evil as christianity. Arguably more evil at present when looking at atrocities committed in its name. This is a world away from saying all muslims are evil before my comment is twisted.

A big issue with mohammed vs jesus (as prophets go) is that mohammed had slaves, sold them and committed many of the terrible things that tend to be consigned to the old testament, if you're a christian. the koran is also a very different book to the bible with explicit instructions as to how society and its systems should be formed.

I'll happily debate with any jewish, chirstian or muslim person.

YANBU!

Eatalot · 05/02/2018 15:21

When athiests massacre millions of people who dont believe what they do come back.

Coloursthatweremyjoy · 05/02/2018 15:22

I heard Frankie Boyle (of all people) on Room 101. He put in "militant atheists" citing that nobody asked for their opinion or to hear them be evangelical about their lack of belief or to be rude about people. I liked that.

I am a Christian, my friend is in her own words "A complete heathen". We rub along just fine, I don't constantly try to 'save' her and she doesn't constantly call me delusional. Occasionally she might tell me that she just can't cope with God stuff if she saw something on TV or something. If she asks what I did last night and I was at a prayer meeting I tell her because, well, I was. Like adults. I find the whole "invisible sky fairy" thing a bit juvenile tbh.

Qvar · 05/02/2018 15:23

Muslims don’t knock on my door every other Saturday to tell me I’m a sinner. Hindus don’t interfere in medical policy in this country. Sikhs don’t dictate school holidays.

Can you really not see why everyone gets pissed off with Christians? You run EVERYTHING and then whine when people dare to say they disagree with this. When other religions say “hey we are believers too, that means we get a say!” there’s UPROAR in the church aisles

Removal of privileges feels like a punishment. That doesn’t mean anyone is actually being punished.
