AIBU the elephant pile in the room

Recently our family has grown from 4 to 5. DD was a surprise, we also have DS1 and DS2 plus I have a male DP so the washing And ironing pile resembles an elephant it's soooo big. It doesn't matter what I do it never goes away it's always just there.
In my mother's house growing up she ironed everything, bedsheets even (seriously!), so I have always felt I should do the same, but I am not as organised as she is. So I guess my question is AIBU to just declare unless absolutely necessary, ironing just isn't happening any more? Confused

You want something ironed? That's what professional cleaners are for. If you ask REALLY nicely, I might take the clothes to the cleaners and pick them up for you.

JesterA · 05/02/2018 14:13

See we have the opposite problem to some pp as my kids see the ironing board and get a grumpy face on as they know no fun now for a few hours haha. I'm sure they will be glad to see the back of it also

My DP is ex army and much better at ironing that me.
I won't wear creased clothes but rarely iron.

Things get folded and hung up. I will iron if I need to wear it that day.
My kids don't have anything that needs ironing.
OH does his own shirts.

Now piles of clothes waiting to be put away....

bimbobaggins · 05/02/2018 14:22

I do like ironed clothing and don’t mind doing it but about once a month I get a batch of 40 items done and it’s only £20 picked up and dropped off.

Fontella · 05/02/2018 14:22

My mum irons everything. I iron nothing.

Me in a nutshell.

ToastyFingers · 05/02/2018 14:23

Only work clothes are ironed here. Or if there's a wedding or something. Un-ironed jeans a t-shirts for all!

chaser90210 · 05/02/2018 14:27

I literally iron nothing

impossible · 05/02/2018 14:29

Don't iron! Life is too short. I fold clothes as they come off the line/clothes horse and that works fine. There are four of us - 2 teen dds who get through mountains of clothes - and no-one has ever complained about lack of ironing. Very occasionally we might do it for a special occasion though this last happened over a year ago - no shortage of special occasions but a good shake and fold or straight onto a coat hanger works fine.

Pollaidh · 05/02/2018 14:33

Only DH shirts, my concert shirt, and very occasionally my work dresses though most don't need it as they're jersey or ponte type fabric. Oh and napkins for formal dinners.

Either my cleaner irons the shirts, or they are collected by a laundry and returned a few days later. Costs vary from £1.25-£1.85 per shirt depending who I use. DH will also iron his own if he ever runs out. I iron nothing except the napkins, and that rarely.

Our parents' generation ironed tea towels, underwear etc. DM either did it herself or gave it to the cleaner, but that was rural and I suspect cost next to nothing.

lubeybooby · 05/02/2018 14:35

fuck ironing

most things are fine even without tumble dryer if you hang carefully and stretch out in the correct places

quick blast of tumble drier for anything more stubborn and hang immediately

don't spin anything cotton on too high a setting especially bedding... hang it well, no need to iron

iron and ironing board reserved for extremely smart occasions only (weddings, funerals, interviews)

WaterBuffaloDancing · 05/02/2018 14:37

I only iron Dh's work shirts and trousers, and the children's school uniform trousers. Their shirts get tumbled and put onto hangers immediately, their jumpers are hung up to dry (secondary school nylon blend.)

I have a cordroy pinafore that definitely needs an iron and I'll run an iron over a couple of cardigans for me. That is it. No more. No bedding, no tea towels, no socks. Life is waaaaay too short to spend hours ironing.

ladystarkers · 05/02/2018 14:38

I iron pretty much nada. Dh sends his work shirts to be done and I send occassional bits but nope... body heat gets rid of creases.

MammaTJ · 05/02/2018 14:38

The only person in this house who does any ironing is 12 year old DD. She goes to Air Cadets, so has to iron her uniforms, but they taught her, I did not!

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 05/02/2018 14:39

Just tumble dry and hang while still hot.

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 05/02/2018 14:43

Nothing gets ironed in my house (much to DM and DMILs horror!). I almost made a twat of myself on Christmas day when I opened my gift from PIL, an iron!!! Shock I plastered a smile on my face and graciously said thank you and made a show of reading the features on the box (I love my PIL to bits and would never be ungrateful) but inside I was thinking WTF!!! When he couldn't bear it any more FIL finally suggested I open the box! The iron box was filled with gorgeous goodies and treats, my favourite perfume, chocs, gloves, moisturiser etc etc Blush Thank goodness I was polite!!!

CaptainHammer · 05/02/2018 14:57

I iron nothing. DH irons his and my work uniform/jeans, nothing else is ironed as it doesn’t need it.

JesterA · 05/02/2018 15:10

That's it! It's done the purge is complete everything is away.

Also my floor is brown. I had forgotten. Thanks everyone!

High five op! Viva la revolution!

swimbikerun123 · 05/02/2018 15:24

DH irons his work shirts.
I iron nothing.
Kids tend to live in sports clothes which would melt upon sight of an iron.

AmaraSas · 05/02/2018 15:30

Bought a new irong board and iron when i moved into my new flat in March

They are still in their packaging and i am rather proud of this fact.

starbrightnight · 05/02/2018 15:31

You did it! Well done, OP, you are braver than me and I only iron once a year - H's scrunched up linen shirts for holiday only.

I think it's a generational thing. My much older sister in law still irons everything and seems quite proud of the fact. I think she secretly looks down on me and my slovenly ways.

DS and H's shirts are hung semi-dry straight from the tumble dryer so never need ironing (5 mins is all it takes to smooth all the wrinkles). I never wear anything that needs ironing. I'm a great smoother out of things while damp / drying - either on hangers or if woollens smoothed out on a towel with another towel on top.

If I was selling my house I might iron pillowcases and duvet cover, just the once for the photos.

Enjoy your new liberated life!

LittleMyLikesSnuffkin · 05/02/2018 15:34

I iron nothing. Well weddings and funeral clothes but as everyone I know would rather live in sin and are really lucky to not go and die don’t get many of either.

My take on it is no one ever said on their deathbed “if only I had ironed more!”

Laundry pile is still massive mind you.

SoftBlocks · 05/02/2018 15:39

I use my iron for Hama beads and getting spilt candle wax out of tablecloths and that’s it.

Goldfishshoals · 05/02/2018 15:42

Ironing is a pointless waste of time and bad for the environment.

Creases in fabric should be a ridiculous non-issue, frankly.
