To think mysogeny should not be made a hate crime?

Of course mysogeny is rife (sadly), but women make up 50% of the population so we are hardly a minority, like disabled, BME or religious minorities.

There are plenty of laws to protect women against men’s aggression and plenty of laws to protect both sexes against discrimination.

I can’t even see what practical application this has and would tie up valuable police time.

And how can we have equality if 50% of the population are pitted against the other 50%? Surely we can’t have a situation where a man is charged with mysogeny for putting vile stuff on the internet, yet a woman could say the same about him and not be prosecuted?

We’re in danger of alienating reasonable, decent men by having a law which would cast them as the villeins and of giving entitled men more reasons to abuse women.

On the other hand I think there should be something to prevent the type of abuse Diane Abbott and other female politicians suffered but this doesn’t need to be female centred but applicable to men and women.

I’m happy to be convinced otherwise if the arguments are good.

Misogyny should be a hate crime, like other hate crimes. It should be an aggravating factor as racist or homophobic abuse is.

By all means make hate against men, simply for being male, also a crime. If it helps some people accept the need for misogyny to be a hate crime then it is probably worth doing.

Olympia - you sound pretty fixed and certain of your views. You're not here to listen, converse and be convinced, so why bother?

DioneTheDiabolist · 04/02/2018 12:16

If misogyny was a crime, John Warboys would still be in prison.

NailsNeedDoing · 04/02/2018 12:20

What sort of evidence would prove that a woman was being mugged on the street because she was a woman though? What difference would there be between a woman and a man that didn't look strong enough to put up a good fight back?

Would we end up with women who've had their cars broken into claiming hate crime when the fact that they're female is irrelevant?

YABU.

Plus, you need to learn to spell misogyny.

We have developed specific laws against hate crimes based on race, religion, sexual-orientation etc. because, sadly, some people were being hateful towards others because of their race etc. There are clearly people acting in a hateful way towards women just because they are women, and I mean hateful in ways other than sexual assault, rape etc.
I'd like to think we live in a society which does not want people to be hateful towards people because of their sex, so there should be specific laws against it to deter and punish those who would do it.

AssassinatedBeauty · 04/02/2018 12:25

@NailsNeedDoing presumably the same way the police/CPS/legal reps do for other hate crimes?

OutsSelf · 04/02/2018 12:27

No. So, for example, if a gay person is burgled, this crime is not automatically prosecuted as a hate crime. Unless homophobic abuse was part of the crime.

Seriously, do people think that racially aggravated etc means that every crime committed against BME people is recorded as a hate crime? Give your heads a wobble

kaytee87 · 04/02/2018 12:29

Reasonable, decent men aren't misogynists though hth

lougle · 04/02/2018 12:30

I think it would be quite easy in some circumstances to identify that it is only women that a perpetrator targeted. For example, if somebody was slashing car tyres, and was only slashing the car tyres of women.

Obviously, sexual assault is trickier, because most men would choose a female target, but motivation does vary, and sexual assault is rarely about sex, isn't it? So if the motivator was a hatred of women, or the perpetrator could be shown to be targeting a certain type of woman, then this specific crime would add a layer of aggrevation that would lead to a longer sentence.

PeppersTheCat · 04/02/2018 12:31

We all need protection against hate crimes

I'm totally fine with misandry being made a hate crime.

btw, ARE there any firm plans to make misogyny into a hate crime?

worridmum · 04/02/2018 12:32

by why should mygongy be a hate crime (aka abuse directed at woman) but it would not be a crime if woman directed the same abuse at a man?

Its still the sexist nonsense that woman can never be perpetrators and always the victim (woman commits a crime she must be mentally unwell should be in a hospital etc a man commits the same crime hes just a disgusting low life should be in prison etc).

There was a case a few years ago when a group of drunk woman decided it was a great idea to fondle a good looking male ticket inspector as in some grabbed his gentals and so rightly got the trained stopped at the next station were railway police could attend (made the train run late by 10 mins) he has demonised in the press and should of just sucked it up as part of his job etc and he was a special snowflake (in contrast if drunk men had done that to a female ticket inspector no one would be saying she overreacted have the whole group arristed/ escorted off the train in the middle of no where wasa rural train station when the whole group was ejected of the train with only 3 being arristed so 9 woman were left at the train station 2 hours from their destiantion)

Fewer than forty posts and we've already had two separate posters fretting about the poor men.

StealthPolarBear · 04/02/2018 12:34

"

Yes the same as that racist nonsense that says people who aren't white are never perpetrators and always victims. That's why prisons are dominate by white people.

PeppersTheCat · 04/02/2018 12:34

What sort of evidence would prove that a woman was being mugged on the street because she was a woman though?

Sexist language?

Olympiathequeen · 04/02/2018 12:34

driggle I acknowledged in the op the hate crime can be aimed at the minorities you mention and they can be an aggravating factor but struggle with the inequality aspect of a mysogyny hate crime.

Women aren’t a minority. Minorities are by their very nature more vulnerable.

Women are vulnerable for many social and historical reasons but surely laws on sex discrimation and other laws can cover this?

I don’t think it should be used purely as an information gathering exercise because the police are understaffed as it is.

And having a heavier sentence because mysogyny is tacked on to the charge? Doesn’t seem fair to me if the crime is the same.

Still waiting for an actual instance where this would be used?

StealthPolarBear · 04/02/2018 12:35

And I don't think misogyny would be assumed just because the victim was ac woman and the perpetrator a man. There would have to be additional evidence that it was a misogyny fuelled crime.

PeppersTheCat · 04/02/2018 12:37

What StealthPolarBear said.

OP, if both misogyny and misandry were made hate crimes, would you have a problem then?

Somerville · 04/02/2018 12:37

You not even bothering to learn the correct spelling of misogyny says it all really, OP. And makes me utterly disinterested in explaining the issue in words of one syllable that you might be able to understand.

lougle · 04/02/2018 12:37

Just imagine your whole life changing forever because you happen to be a woman in your 30s with red hair, who reminds a man of someone he once knew?

Seriously, lives are changed in an instant, just because they are where they are, and they are a woman, and a man has decided that he is going to take what he wants from them. That's so awful Sad

SchrodingersFrilledLizard · 04/02/2018 12:38

Minorities are by their very nature more vulnerable.

How do you explain apartheid in South Africa, then?
