To stick with my budget moisturiser?

In town yesterday looking at some of the fancy beauty counter moisturizers, I was tempted to buy a fancy number at £26...

But then this morning looking at my skin, it's not dry (been drinking more water which seems to make a huge difference amd don't drink alcohol), nor do I have any spots.

I'm just using the nivea soft one with vit E and jojoba, mixed in with a wee bit of suncream, was 2 or 3 pounds.

But the shiny packaging and lovely smelling potions were tempting...they're just a marketing con aren't they? convince me not to spend £26Grin

Yes i have used that too overtheparapetI liked it.

FullSet · 04/02/2018 16:07

They tested moisturisers on a programme recently. I think it had Cherry Healey in. Anyway, save your money.

FullSet · 04/02/2018 16:08

It was on this www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09m2l58

I use the Aldi Lacura Q something or other with SPF 15 smells nice, goes on nice, and stops me breaking out like others I've tried, costs £1.99 too.

riledandharrassed · 04/02/2018 16:45

There were significant flaws within that “research” and they even got the product prices wrong ...

EivissaSenorita · 04/02/2018 18:46

Ask yourself, does your DH put all this thought into his skincare regime? And if he is a similar age to you, does he honestly look worse for wear than you for it?

riledandharrassed · 04/02/2018 19:02

My DP uses daily sunscreen , retinol and sometimes a gycolic peel . He works in a very very macho industry but is often complimented about his skin 😂😂😂.

He’s read the same academic research papers that I have regarding sunscreen and retinol . Ha we have fun evenings clearly ;)

buddhasbelly · 04/02/2018 19:25

@EivissaSenorita well I don't have a DH but I imagine if I did I would steal all his fancy face creams thus making my OP moot! this post is proof I will be single a long long time

Oh and thanks for all the comments. I bought bought lottery ticket yesterday for the first time in yonks, won £25! Due to these responses I'm keeping it for something else Grin

Drinking more water does not improve your skin.

riledandharrassed · 04/02/2018 19:49

Christ sorry cannot type at all today! Get yourself some bits from The Ordinary and some decent sunscreen . You will still have change for a bottle of wine ;)

Lonesurvivor · 04/02/2018 20:03

No my dh doesn't put in as much effort but he does a little as he got older and skin became dry.
There's one year between us and when we were in our twenties/early 30s he looked years younger than me. Now he looks his age and apparently I look much younger than mine. I think myself I look my age which is fine with me.

Nicpem1982 · 04/02/2018 21:50

Another vote for the superdrug simply serums I use both the day and night serum and my skin has never been better

LemonysSnicket · 04/02/2018 23:04

My family use the Nivea Soft. It has lanolin in it so really aggravates my eczema so I can’t use it.
I use Cetaphil which is £10 and keeps me spot free ( non-comedogenic) and dry patch free ( magic).

Whatever works for you, It’s all v individual and if cheap works then you’re golden.

Crazybunnylady123 · 05/02/2018 11:30

Ok, I just want to say that in many cases I believe you get what you pay for.
I admit I do spend money on my face cream, I believe I do look young for my age.
However I buy organic and cruelty free products and although cheaper products may work, you do not know the longer term affect it may have on your skin.
So the comparison would have to be the price vs ingredients and ethics. In this day and age who needs products tested on animals and containing harsh chemicals.

RibenaMonsoon · 05/02/2018 11:40

I use whatever I've got to hand. Aveeno usually. I like to use oil at night in the winter.
Best cream I've ever used is skin's Shangri la from LUSH. But that comes with a 25 quid price tag sadly. But I do like to splurge on it on occasion as it's hands down the best cream I've ever used!

Lulusmother · 05/02/2018 11:58

I watched that BBC program as well. They suggested Aldi’s moisturiser as it had Retinol in it... about £3.... amazing ! I love it !

I always stick to the rule that if I can’t afford to maintain the use of a product then I won’t get it.
For example I’ve been tempted in the past to buy things such as Elemis or Liz Earle face cleansers and creams, or Tanya hair products but I know these things aren’t one off purchases like say an expensive bag or shoes would be, and I therefore couldn’t afford to maintain buying the products, so there’s no point in buying them as a one off special treat. Instead I tend to stick to Garnier and similar products.

If you can afford to always buy the fancy/dearer cream and really want it then go for it, but if you can’t then stick to your cheap and cheerful Nivea. It seems to be working from what you say and even if it doesn’t work as well (who knows), at least you can afford to keep it up.

LemonShark · 05/02/2018 12:56

Summer, I find the no 7 hot cloth cleanser to be an even better version of the Liz Earle, and I've used both. It's £10 and lasts a couple months. If you get a Boots voucher for skincare during their promotions it goes down to £5.

DistanceCall · 05/02/2018 13:02

Caroline Hirons has a good post on where to spend money in your routine:

www.carolinehirons.com/2015/02/cheat-sheetfaqs-where-should-i-spend.html

She doesn't see the need to spend too much on moisturiser. For over 35/40 she says:

Moisturiser – normal/day. Just a good coat. Think hydration and protection, not the second coming of Jesus.

halfwitpicker · 05/02/2018 13:05

Used to work in skincare and I can categorically say that Nivea blue tub is beyond doubt the best budget skincare.

I've used everything from Clinique to Lancome and they are the same thing just in better packaging.

halfwitpicker · 05/02/2018 13:08

Mrsjayy,

Try Johnson's baby shampoo to get rid of build up.

maddiemookins16mum · 05/02/2018 13:09

My dear mum swore by her navy blue shallow metal tin of Nivea cream. She used it every day (and then the plastic tub like containers from the 90's). I remember thinking she had the smoothest forehead right until she died aged 80 with barely a wrinkle.
I use a supermarket day cream with SPF 20, costs £3.99.
