To have warmed to Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall

I am old enough to remember the Diana years really clearly, including Charles & Diana’s wedding.
At the time I thought Camilla was awful “there were 3 of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded” said Diana, the media minx.
All 3 players, Diana, Charles & Camilla were victims of the protocols of the time, ie the future Queen needed to basically be a Virgin, & Charles & Diana basically had an arranged marriage, which just didn’t work out, but due to their position they weren’t allowed to quietly go their separate ways.
Charles & Camilla have —officially— been together over 20 years. Camilla has kept her head down & they look like a very happy couple.

I don’t know about the political ramifications of Camilla being queen or not. But as a person, she seems ok.

"His ambitious plans to use his discovery to send messages, involving the careful torturing of a small king in order to modulate the signal, were never fully expanded because, at that point, the bar closed.”

Yes Lord Mountbatten was really keen for his granddaughter Amanda Knatchbull to marry Prince Charles.
He was really ambitious and was the Uncle of Prince Philip. It was his idea to get the Mountbatten included in the Royal family’s name.
So any girl children of Prince Harry will be Lady X Mountbatten Windsor, until Prince Charles becomes King; then technically they should become princesses. Let’s see if there are any more letters patent issued when Meghan is pregnant...

He didnt go running to do documentaries to put his story forward

Yes, he did. He gave a high profile TV interview to one of the Dimblebys about his adultery before Diana gave her interview.

No can't warm to her.
What she & Charles did to Diana was disgraceful. But Im not a fan of the monarchy anyway.
In the age where people can't afford to feed their children or heat their homes. Let alone the people losing their homes
we should not be paying for a bunch of people to Swan around the world & Live in massive palaces because they happened to be born into a family.
I like the queen but after she goes. That should be it. I would rather my taxes go to NHS or educating my kids than paying for others to do things my children will never get a chance to do.

Primarkismyonlyoption · 05/02/2018 20:53

Id argue the monarchy generates an income close to its outgoings surely?

eloisesparkle · 05/02/2018 21:06

I really dislike cheats whether they are Camilla, Charles or Diana.
I think of a Will Carling's wife and Oliver Hoare's wife.
If you have been hurt because your husband is with someone else why then would you hurt another woman by having an affair with their husband ?
And I really liked Diana.
I have no time for Camilla or Charles.

I could never use Tampax after those leaked phone recordings came out

Not very evolved or kind is it?

The monarchy also has an unquantifiable value in terms of international relations, e.g. the Cambridges' recent tour was apparently at the behest of the Foreign Office. I don't really like any of the Royals, but I can see the value of the monarchy as a charm offensive in terms of international diplomacy.

Because that's what they do in those circles. It's all very me-me-me. When you don't have to worry about the minutiae of life, because there's always somebody else to do it for you, it's almost inevitable that people become self-absorbed.

Saffronwblue · 05/02/2018 22:05

Camilla seems like she would be great company and is basically a nice person, but I think she and Charles showed utter cruelty and lack of integrity. Not only to Diana but to the 4 children involved.

raisedbyguineapigs · 05/02/2018 22:19

If you want to pick and choose your head of state, become a Republican. Otherwise, Charles will be King, then William, then George. No matter who they turn out to be, good or bad. We were one divorced American away from having a Nazi on the throne.

I think looking back on Charles and Diana's engagement, it was staring us in the face after the, 'whatever love is' comment he made.

honeyroar · 05/02/2018 23:15

Absolutely, in the interviews he looks like someone who really doesn't want to be there, just doing his job, not someone in love.

JAMMFYesPlease · 06/02/2018 00:13

I always felt sorry for Camilla. But then I was never a fan of Diana. She's not the perfect saint she made herself look to be but she played that part well enough to win most of the public. Charles and Camilla should have been allowed to marry in the first place.

Mountbatten-Windsor is only used if the father is untitled, or if they are using the name without title (as William did in his legal suit in France).

They'd be titled the same way Lady Louise is styled as Lady X Windsor. Royal titles for carry Mountbatten.

Camilla comes across to me as a dame who would be a lot of fun on a night out. My reservations are about her role as adulteress. I am a bit judgey when it comes to that.

I have no time whatsoever for Charles, personable, charming, down to earth, whatever, that he may be. There are lots of charming, emotionally stunted men out there.

I liked Diana to some extent, thought she made a good effort to be what she was expected to be, clearly thrown in at the deep end and without much to fall back on in terms of life experience or family support from her own family. What sort of parents could ever have thought Charles would be a suitable match for her? They must have known about Charles and Camilla. The engagement was announced when I was in the year before my Leaving Cert year in Dublin, and generated almost universal incredulity among my classmates - we were all about three years younger than her and we thought the whole thing was preposterous.

Overall though, being good Irish republicans with a small r, we thought the whole royal family thing was a bit silly and I for one have not changed my mind about that in the intervening years.

I never felt the adulation for her that developed. I think that was something that was created by the press that wouldn't have worked if she hadn't been so good looking. That being said, I felt truly shocked and quite badly affected when she died, maybe because I had experienced the untimely death of a close family member of my own a year before.

"Mountbatten-Windsor is only used if the father is untitled"

Prince Harry has no title at present. He is styled Prince as a courtesy. He used Wales as surname when he needed one (school, army)

He's bound to get a title when he marries, as did his paternal uncles and brother. Any DC will get the usual junior form that flows from that titles. They might be prince/princesses if HMQ says so (I think that can be done either in the creation of the title, of by separate letters patent).
