To think fridge raiders/yoghurt not breakfast?

By themselves. Ds who is nearly 12 seems to think individually they are a healthy and nutritious thing. He is in a strop as I've told him he needs a more filling breakfast. What do you think?

So meat and yoghurt? Seems fine to me from a filling POV.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 04/02/2018 08:49

They are high in protein, the yogurt may be sugary depending on the type but still not awful. Some carbs would make it more balanced but not strictly necessary. If he doesn't eat it every day I wouldn't worry.

Whatshallidonowpeople · 04/02/2018 08:50

Don't buy them then.

GooodMythicalMorning · 04/02/2018 08:50

You get 6 pieces in fridge raiders though.

Pick your battles

Mine have been eating birthday cake all week on the way out - quite continental!

Snowysky20009 · 04/02/2018 08:50

Ds2 will often have yoghurt but I will make him have 2/3 pieces of fruit to go with it, or I give him a small bowl of musli and have him pour the yoghurt over it.

GooodMythicalMorning · 04/02/2018 08:51

Not both together. One item.

At 12 he should eat the breakfast you provide. If you are just letting him grab stuff from the fridge then I'm surprised it's not worse choices

GooodMythicalMorning · 04/02/2018 08:54

I do pick my battles but im worried as he's so skinny and tall. There nothing to him.

OP posts:
ineedamoreadultieradult · 04/02/2018 08:56

There is more to his diet than breakfast though, what else does he eat? Have you checked his weight against the NHS BMI calculator, 12 year olds are supposed to be skinny is not a bad thing unless he is under weight.

Iwillstartagainonmonday · 04/02/2018 08:58

Theres nothing to my son either, and he eats like a pig! Grin At least he's eating something op.

As others have said. Pick your battles.

ShortandAnnoying · 04/02/2018 08:59

Why not make something more sustaining but equally grabbable and leave it in the fridge for him to take to school. Something like a breakfast wrap or a healthy smoothy containing oats and some protein. There's quite a few recipes for things like that and they are quick to do.

OddBoots · 04/02/2018 09:00

There are cheaper and less processed ways to get cooked chicken but that doesn't sound like a bad breakfast, a lot of us don't get enough protein in our breakfasts and growing adolescents need more of it than most of us. There might be a fair amount of sugar in the yoghurts but probably not as much as they stick on cereals marketed at children.

BarbaraofSevillle · 04/02/2018 09:00

Fridge raiders are those weird processed chicken things aren't they? Probably not a good idea to eat too many of those.

Yogurt is a very popular breakfast, but I can't face it in the morning for some reason, but that's probably because I don't really eat cold food.

Maybe he's not hungry first thing? Most people aren't, so struggle to eat a filling breakfast in the time before they leave for school/work. How about a sandwich that he can eat at morning breaktime?

stickytoffeevodka · 04/02/2018 09:00

Nothing wrong with yoghurt or meat for breakfast - both pretty normal choices on the continent.

I had yoghurt with blueberries mixed in this morning. I can't eat big meals first thing and often just have a banana.

GooodMythicalMorning · 04/02/2018 09:00

I've offered to cook something. He doesn't want it.

I’ve always been shot at eating breakfast. I think at that age my mum was just glad I was eating something.

GooodMythicalMorning · 04/02/2018 09:02

I guess I am being u. I just wish I could get something more than a frube in him.

TheFairyCaravan · 04/02/2018 09:04

There’s no way I could have been arsed to argue with my kids over breakfast when they were 12. If he’s hungry he’ll eat. Some people aren’t breakfast people.

In a year or so he won’t stop eating and you’ll be wishing he’d only have a yoghurt for the sake of your purse.

GooodMythicalMorning · 04/02/2018 09:05

Ok. I'll back down. Maybe pick up better chicken he can defrost

Bluelonerose · 04/02/2018 09:06

I have the same problem with ds2. He's just not hungry in the morning but neither am I.
On a school day if he hasn't had breakfast we compromise. Hell have a glass of fruit juice for breakfast and take a yoghurt and banana for break.
Not the best I agree but at least it's SOMETHING inside them first thing.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 04/02/2018 09:07

Why are you buying frubes and fridge raiders if you don't want him to eat them. Cook a chicken and put the cold meat in a Tupperware in the fridge, buy natural yogurt and some berries. He is eating processed food because you are buying processed food. You can either continue as you are or change what you are doing, you can't be annoyed at your son for eating the food you provide.

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 04/02/2018 09:09

My kids eat what I buy. Solution seems very simple to be honest.

GooodMythicalMorning · 04/02/2018 09:11

They're not so bad as part of a lunch with more filling things. Plus dh buys them, I'd never buy them.

GreenTulips · 04/02/2018 09:11

My 12 year is equally skinny and eats like a pig - teens are funny with eating at the best of times

Try the tougher drinks instead of frubes bit more filling - or have a fruit smoothly in the fridge
