Absolutely love Elkie’s voice. Must give her album a go. Always loved sunshine after the rain then heard it used in the televised Manchester Passion a fair few years ago. Mary was singing it after the crucifixion and it brought a whole new perspective to the lyrics which made me love it even more

Barbara Dickson is still about - she was never really a pop or musical theatre singer. She does a lot of Scottish folk music and is still touring.

This thread has made me really happy.

My Mum and Dad were (and are) big fans of Barbara Dickson, and my sister and I used to sing this all the time, fighting over who got to be Barbara. Elaine Paige was seen as the enemy in our house!

Somehow I think of Barbara as the underdog, where you would expect Elaine Paige to be better, but Barbara trounces her. I know this is unreasonable!

I also hate Elaine Paige’s radio show, but most of all I hate the fact that she is such a luvvie and actually calls herself “EP”

Elaine is the stronger singer. Listen to "in the end he needs a little but more than me, more security...". Elaine nails that in one breath, Barbara doesn't.
Having said that, they're both great singers- knock spots off a lot of those charting today....

We were talking about why Elkie Brooks never became a superstar when we went to see her. She was so talented (still is) and beautiful. She had a few personal problems I think but then all the big stars did. Not sure she loves the star bit - she loves what her voice can do. I think you can see her enjoying her own mastery here.

About 200 years ago (!) I used to sing around the folk clubs of London, as did Barbara Dixon. She is to this day one of the kindest, funniest, most generous people I've ever met. And yes, she's got a great voice, too.

I know someone who was a technician on a more recent Elkie tour (prob 10 years ago now though!) who said she was awful to work with. Very demanding and aggressive towards those around her.

Agreed that as a song it's a total earworm. But it could be worse.....but I won't name the worst ones as then they will chase BD and EP out of your heads and no one wants that to happen.

OMG Barbara looks A.Ma.Zing doesn't she. She's so damn talented everything she sings is pure gold.

Lovely Elkie clip! I probably sound like an old gimmer but where is the next generation of singer songwriters like these ladies. Nothing compares to them.

Thanks for this OP. Just spent a lovely time reliving seeing Chess and singing all the songs. I’m in bed ill at the moment so it’s been lovely trip down memory lane.

I also love John Barrowmans and Daniel Boys version of I Know Him So Well.

Elaine Paige is the one I would prefer at a musical, Barbara at a concert or radio. Most of the top musical theatre stars are not what I would listen to at home. My niece is called Pearl after Elkie Brooks, her songs along with Marc Bolan are my childhood.
