Wtf has happened to my brain

sillyoldowl · 03/02/2018 19:55

I used to be smart... I think. Two kids later and my brain is a marshmallow. I lose stuff all the time and can't remember what I'm talking about mid sentence. I am very sleep deprived.
Recently I really noticed it when I was throwing one of the kids up in the air and catching them... I did it maybe three times and realised... it. Was. The. Dog! He looked incredibly puzzled. I popped him back down and he just trotted off happily... but wtf happened there?!?
Anyone done anything equally stupid due to no sleep and to much on their mind!

I was so sleep deprived once I wore odd boots to work once one black & one brown I didn't notice until halfway through my shift and that was only because the heel height was different!
Try some B12 spray it might help with your memory!

QuilliamCakespeare · 03/02/2018 20:59

Two kids, no brain here also. I used to be clever. Now I have to think really hard and double check everything at work. I sometimes think 'is this what it's like to be thick?' Confused

hollowtree · 03/02/2018 21:05

Oh my life! I laughed so much at this and had to read it to my DH!!!

I am so sleep deprived I took dinner straight out of the oven with my bags hands the other day. My skin blistered, burst and peeled instantly and I had to sleep with two tea towels full of ice wrapped around my hands.

Your mishaps sound funnier and less dangerous! I want your marshmallow brain instead of mine xx

user365241987 · 03/02/2018 21:05

Purple Grin hilarious and actually makes me feel better.

QuilliamCakespeare · 03/02/2018 21:07

My recent marshmallow moments:

Finding the pepper grinder in the fridge.

Forgetting the word for 'tartan' while describing some material to DH. I went with 'you know, that Scottish pattern'. I also forgot the word 'flipchart' while trying to book one with a stand for a meeting. I asked for 'that thing you hang paper on'. The girl on the phone was Hmm.

hollowtree · 03/02/2018 21:11

Bags hands!?!? Bahaha! I am clearly still stupid! Bare hands obviously

CleverQuacks · 03/02/2018 21:15

I forgot the word for lamp post last week. Instead having to ask my 6 year old what that “light pole” was really called.

Thebluedog · 03/02/2018 21:16

I find it’s my driving. I used to be good at it... now I’m absolutely shit

hitty · 03/02/2018 21:24

My brain has also turned to total mush post-DC. My memory is awful. Before kids I wrote a book. I picked it up the other day and I genuinely couldn't even remember writing what I was reading. it was like seeing it for the first time.

captainjackandjill · 03/02/2018 21:30

My finest mummy brain moment was taking PFB to the Dr, and asking the Dr to check her 'paws'. Dr was Hmm, think you mean 'hands'. I was Blush.

Also had an odd floppy feeling whilst out shopping one time with PFB, looked down and realized I still had my goofy slippers onGrin

ArkAtEee · 03/02/2018 21:40

So glad I'm not the only one. My kid is 6 and my brain hasn't come back. I work as a software developer and feel like I'm clinging on with my fingertips while all my younger, brainier colleagues roll their eyes.

ArkAtEee · 03/02/2018 21:43

Should mention, I've left the house without shoes before (not even slippers) and also 'cooked' dinner in the wrong (i.e. turned off) oven.

Discusting · 03/02/2018 21:46

I have actually considered seeing my GP over my loss of intelligence since having DS. I’m a maths teacher but my speed of professing has reduced significantly and my ability to process and work out problems has really declined. I’m just no-where near as sharp as I was!

underneaththeash · 03/02/2018 21:53

That’s why we have maternity leave.. my brain was addled for months after having the DC. Lack of sleep and hormones left me useless, I tried to do an exam for my masters and couldn’t even turn on the equipment, I got an extension.

GreenRut · 04/02/2018 06:21

I have lots of meetings with my job and often with very technical people. I used to be very eloquent. These days I kind of find myself zoning out while I'm talking as if it's someone else talking and they are boring me. Something always pulls me back and usually I have no idea what I've been saying and have got into the habit of just stopping and saying animatedly "well everyone knows I'm not a technical person so let's hand over to someone who is!" I've also blamed my wifi being rubbish (all meetings are remote) and say oops sorry my wifi is really playing up, is best if I don't talk so I'll just put myself on mute and listen. I finished a meeting the other day by completely forgetting what I had been talking about and just saying "right ok well yes, I don't actually have any more energy to say anything else ". How have I still got a job.

sillyoldowl · 04/02/2018 08:21

Some of these have really made me laugh... I'm a tad hung over so it helped... although now hung over, sleep deprived and marshmallow brain... may as well not get up I'll be no good to anyone.

I once was dropping my oldest dd to school... walked around the corner and called her to catch up, stuck out my hand and she tucked hers into it, got round to her class and realised it. Was. Not. My dd. I basically accidentally kidnapped a child whilst my own child looked on confused as fuck. Accidental child just smiled and carried on staying with me. That wAs just special

Ah these are fantastic! I'm only 7 months in with having a baby so I see I've still got plenty of thick time to come!
Can't remember much off the top of my head, though I know I've done silly stuff lately, but then I can't remember much at all recently!

I know I have done the going out with slippers on (luckily my sister was there to point it out before we got too far), also been walking down the road with pushchair and dog and suddenly got gripped with fear that I'd left dd at home alone! I hadn't, she was in the pram

QuilliamCakespeare · 04/02/2018 21:17

Oh god. So it doesn't ever come back? Confused

glueandstick · 04/02/2018 21:35

I picked up my toddler at play group and took her off for a snack.

It want my toddler.

And it was a boy.

The other parent looked confused but luckily saw the funny side.

Cellardoor23 · 04/02/2018 21:36

My brain is mush too and I only have the one DC. I put the butter in the cupboard the other day. Don't remember doing this, only found out when I opened the cupboard to get a tea bag. Must have been me as I was the only one in the house at the time.

Not to mention the amount of times I say 'thingy's' when trying to describe something. It's definitely getting worse.

alarox · 04/02/2018 21:37

Oh thank God! I've been telling myself it's the sleep deprivation but I was starting to think it was something more serious. Last full night's sleep was nearly three years and two kids ago. I can't even think in full coherent sentences anymore, let alone speak them. This post alone has taken mega brain effort! Tipping point this week was when I forgot the word for "lungs"... whilst giving an anatomy lesson. Painful Blush

UnderTheDesk · 04/02/2018 21:47

On a serious note, if this is happening a lot, then you may be deficient in magnesium. Try a month of Berocca or other supplements and see if things improve.

On a less serious note...twice in the last two years I've thought "Fuck, I've forgotten my car keys...whilst driving my car."

poppythetroll · 04/02/2018 21:48

Very sleep deprived here too!! In fact me and DH have just been discussing the fact I've had 14 hours sleep in the last 86 hours!! Night shifts, teething baby and MIL very ill in hospital - my DH hasn't had much more tbh!! I've just sat there and answered a question with the response "yeah he's bought him to play with him hasn't he" WTF he asked me something about our DD wellies??!!! I knew then it was time for bed!!!

Snakesandsnakes · 04/02/2018 21:52

Oh, thank goodness I was beginning to think it was just me. Pre-children I had a very good memory, it really was, I’m not just boasting, people commented, were envious, asked me when they wanted to know stuff - now they just laugh.
I’ll never be the same again.

Stormwhale · 04/02/2018 21:54

My latest marshmallow moment was going shopping, leaving the car for about an hour then returning and finding I had lost my keys. I stood there in a panic, burst into tears and didn't know what to do. After about 15 minutes I tried the car door just on the off chance that I had forgotten to lock it, thinking at least I would have somewhere to sit while I worked out a solution. The car opened and there my keys were in the ignition. Twat.
