To wonder WTF neighbour is doing with my bins

We have 1 general rubbish bin, 1 garden bin, 1 mini food waste bin and then boxes for paper, glass, metal and plastic.

Over the last couple of months I've gone to bring in my bins and 1 of the boxes has been missing on several occasions. It has been windy lately so I assumed they'd blown away and ordered a replacement from the council.

Yesterday I was messing around in the garage so NDN couldn't see me. He walked into my drive. Poked around my bins, picked up 2 boxes with their lids and walked back to his house.

I called over just as he was opening the side gate and asked for them back. He claimed he thought they were his (they've got my house number on) but gave them back.

Now I'm wondering if he took the previous ones I've lost. The weirdest thing is the council will provide as many as you want for free. Why on earth is he doing this?

Does he have a hobby that involves storing lots of small items? Giant Lego setup in his basement with handy storage boxes?

BMW6 · 02/02/2018 17:47

I bet he took the others. Cheeky fucker. Could you try and sneak a peek in his garage?

JJPP123 · 02/02/2018 17:59

It's so weird

I bet he's using them for storage. We had someone take one from in front of our house nonchalantly and he got the shock of his life when we crossed the street to ask him for it back. I think some people think they are first come first served, even when they are sitting by someone's drive!

Dazedandconfuzzled · 02/02/2018 18:11

We have a neighbour that does this. Similar set up to you. We thought our bins had blown away so ordered new ones, we then happened to be home on bin day one day and when he opened his garage to pull out his bins we saw our bins stacked up in his garage, house number and everything. Pain in the arse cause it takes 10 days to get new bins so we missed collection the next week.

JJPP123 · 02/02/2018 18:37

He could request his own, nice new unused bins if he wanted. Instead he wants my used ones.

I've ordered more from the council. DH wants to write "Neighbours Name Don't Steal This" on them...

I’d certainly by writing my name on them in big, bright letters.

PoisonousSmurf · 02/02/2018 20:37

Get a wildlife camera and catch him in the act. He may not do it again though, as you know that it's him stealing them!

Hefzi · 02/02/2018 20:39

He's using them to store the remains of the last neighbour who tried to stop him nicking their bins Grin

Flomy · 02/02/2018 20:39

Dazedandconfuzzled did you get them back?

SweetMoon · 02/02/2018 20:39

Order him some, it'll make his day Grin

Ikanon · 02/02/2018 20:42

New ones our way cost £25 each Shock

What a twat your neighbour is!

He probably does that as well.

Dazedandconfuzzled · 02/02/2018 20:49

No. He ignored us, just shut his garage door. He's a bit of a cock though. He had been blocking our other neighbours car in with his bins for some reason so they had a word. Next week he passive aggressively put them right in front of their door instead. He's the only guy with a garage, as the rest of the houses just have a parking space and he seems to think it makes him so much better than us.

Youre lucky - we have to pay for lost bins and its not cheap!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 02/02/2018 20:51

Dazed maybe he's saving them up to build a bin fortress?

JJPP123 · 02/02/2018 20:53

If I were paying for them I'd be far less lighthearted about It!

OP posts:
CastielIsMyAngel · 02/02/2018 20:56

I wish ours were free, it’s £20 per replacement (or it was, could be more now since the garden waste collection goes up by £5 every year)

Dazedandconfuzzled · 02/02/2018 20:56

Jesus nothing would surprise me tbh. He's an odd one. He cleans his car obsessively as well, he has a special brush to brush snow off his car but he doesn't drive his car in the snow. He doesn't use his garage for anything other than storing his bins and car washing equipment.

JudgeRulesNutterButter · 02/02/2018 20:57

CCTV time, OP!

ObscuredbyFog · 02/02/2018 22:24

It's one reason why your council tax increases.

JJPP123 · 02/02/2018 22:50

Fair point!

Have you seen his wife lately? ;-)

AuntiePat69 · 03/02/2018 01:46

Not unreasonable at all, I'd be intrigued if my neighbour kept nicking my bins. Did they have anything in them at the time? Perhaps he's a compulsive hoarder or treasure hunter.

Or maybe he's gradually building a massive fort.
