...to report friend to hmrc

HMRCorNot · 02/02/2018 16:02

I have name changed for this

Close friend has at least 3 rental properties in prime locations. She Has been receiving rental income for over 10 years. Amounting to 6 figures(incl any mortgage amounts) Never declared.

She is In highest tax bracket so will be selecting no in drop down box for rental income on tax return which starts blank and then has two options yes or no - so no excuse to “forget” or not know.

I am also landlord and high earner so no jealousy. I find it immoral and unfair let alone illegal. She is surprised I declare!

Would IBU to report?

Can this be traced to me?

Can’t get comfortable either way.

Scared of reporting but feel ill that she feels she should be exempt from paying.

Wwyd? Aibu?

@Cherrycokewinning the net result is the same, though. There is less money for public services and giving Rich tories tax breaks

psychomath · 03/02/2018 11:45

MermaidHead, no worries Smile I was probably a bit OTT myself - it's been a really long week and I've been getting steadily more and more wound up by people at work making my own job harder through their apparent inability to use more than five brain cells at once. Should probably just have had a glass of wine myself instead of getting involved!

Apologies to whoever originally posted that comment for taking out my unrelated frustration on you Blush

Motoko · 03/02/2018 14:21

I think OP should report it, but I don't think she will, because from what OP has said about their relationship, I'm guessing the person in question is related somehow, possibly a SIL.
The fall out would be very difficult for OP. If it's an in-law relative, it could cause problems in OP's marriage. I can see why it would not be so black and white.

What does your DH think about it OP?

SquiffyatTiffanys · 03/02/2018 17:35

Ok. Ex Tax inspector here and then many years as a tax professional. The HMRC can’t keep up with all tax evasion and this is what it is. It is a criminal offence but unless you are a famous person needed to be made an example of (Ken Dodd etc) you won’t get a criminal record but you will pay back the tax you owe with interest and a penalty. You can report anonymously: choose your local tax office and send a letter and list the property addresses. You can name the owner but they will be able see o work it out from there. For every CF like that we lose the wages to pay for a nurse or teacher. Yes I’m being Tough, sanctimonious all these things but she is breaking the law.

Thinker03 · 03/02/2018 17:35

How just HOW CAN YOU CALL YOURSELF A FRIEND? YOU ARE A SNAKE. It's none let me repeat NONE of your business. Every one will have their own dose of karma in life. Just make sure you're a good person which clearly you are not. This country is built on CORRUPTION and defraud and THEFT. Nice guys finish last in this country and guess what, I don't actually blame your friend, personally I would be too scared but TBI even if she declared it...no one will benefit but the gready corrupt government or no actually, the royals. They will benefit. Why don't you call hmrc on the royals since you have nothing better to do!Angry

IrisAtwood · 03/02/2018 17:39

@Thinker03. Tax is everybody’s business. It is what pays for our services and is the price we pay for living in a society which provides security, health, education, care and benefits for its citizens.
I would save your anger for the those who defraud the country and take everything they can without paying.

Canyouguess · 03/02/2018 17:41

Thinker’s post is the kind of post that you go to year sort, because it’s flawed on so many levels, and then stop yourself because you realise someone like Thinker most definitely doesn’t live up to their name.

Canyouguess · 03/02/2018 17:41

“Year sort” should read tear apart

TalkinPeace · 03/02/2018 17:49

I have reported people to HMRC using the form I linked up thread.
It was the right thing to do.
There were no repercussions on me.
I will do it again if I need to.

Tax is everybody's business

gillybeanz · 03/02/2018 17:51

close friend? Confused

Yes, report her if it makes you uneasy, but tell her first or you're a snake and worthy of the title friend.

Why be so close to someone who you don't share the same moral compass as?

gillybeanz · 03/02/2018 17:52

not worthy of the title friend

CaMePlaitPas · 03/02/2018 17:52

Oooh this is bad karma. Tread very carefully.

LambMadras · 03/02/2018 17:54

Thinker03 what a twatty unhelpful post. Why on earth is OP a snake if she wants to report a crime? Get a fucking grip

Mummyoflittledragon · 03/02/2018 17:55

Lol @Thinker03 I didn’t realise we were in Zimbabwe.

expatinscotland · 03/02/2018 17:56

LOL at 'karma'. There's no such thing. Shop her arse.

BakedBeans47 · 03/02/2018 17:57

It’s none let me repeat NONE of your business

Of course it is don’t be so silly

Tax evasion deprives society of money it needs for us all to benefit. It doesn’t all go on the royals

Ironic user name there thinker

SundaysFunday · 03/02/2018 17:58

@Thinker03 ODFOD

Of course you should report her, she is a thief and making a mockery of all law abiding tax payers.

lily2403 · 03/02/2018 17:59

i agree she is wrong not to declare. if it were my friend i would talk to her about it.

i wouldnt just report she will find out for sure it was you.

I feel you maybe a little jealous not of her committing fraud but when you say i pay mine, just sounds childish
you should pay it as she should but i would talk to my friend and warn that it is serious.
Nothing more sure than death anf taxes hahah

BakedBeans47 · 03/02/2018 18:00

Because she owes it ALL and because i have paid ALL of mine.

I don’t think that’s spiteful at all. I don’t earn a massive amount but I pay every penny piece in tax expected of me and expect others to do the same.

G00dnessMe · 03/02/2018 18:06

You horrible people...how can you do that to a friend? No I would NOT report her. I could not be the cause of her financial breakdown, and the pain and distress that would follow. You all dont think of that side of things do you? She might have a family - kids, sick partner, elderly parents, who knows, that this money is being used to support. Is she doing right by avoiding the tax system, NO. But are you doing right by reporting her and standing on the side while she suffers, NO.

A FRIEND should explain to her she is doing wrong and that eventually the tax system will catch up with her...karma will bite her on the ass. Before that happens do the right thing and declare.

There are MPs, big business tycoons, the mega rich, all who are avoiding the tax system and yet you pick on one little person with a couple of properties? Really.

TalkinPeace · 03/02/2018 18:07

*Lily2403
i wouldnt just report she will find out for sure it was you.
NO SHE WILL NOT

I am utterly sure of it because of the way HMRC have handled a couple of the reports I have made
HMRC will NEVER
say
"ooh, we did not notice your dodgy dealing, but somebody reported you"
EVER
Hey will ask the questions in a way that does NOT give away what put them on to her.

TalkinPeace · 03/02/2018 18:08

G00dnessme
you pick on one little person with a couple of properties? Really.
And a £100k salary
Hmm

Hope you are not moaning about cuts to the NHS or schools or anything else like that ....

G00dnessMe · 03/02/2018 18:14

TalkingPeace

Yes £100k salary !!!

luckylorca · 03/02/2018 18:15

To all those who say "Don't do anything, you'd be a bad friend!" etc:

Next time your elderly mum/boyfriend/gorgeous child urgently needs an ambulance/emergency op/expensive cancer treatment and it's DENIED altogether or DELAYED due to lack of public funds - remember it's people like this, who cheat our tax or benefits system, that are to blame (along with poor financial or management decisions by the government, obviously)!!

G00dnessMe · 03/02/2018 18:16

Cuts to services are because our 'so called govt' chooses to secretly pay the top dogs in our society...no one dobs them in. No. Lets all pick on the 'friend'.
