To think that scented sanitary products

Are unnecessary and cause infections?

I bought some panty liners from Aldi - one of the few places you could get unscented sanitary protection stuff from. Opened the box, they are bloody scented. No mention of this on the packaging.

I've complained to them privately via social media. Their first response was a polite, standard brush off. The second one asked me for the barcode so they could look into things. Today's response is that they're in the process of changing the package. Sorry.

What is it with the trend for sticking perfume in these things? It's completely unnecessary, can cause thrush and other infections.

Honour Your Flow cloth reusable pads. You’ll never go back once you try.

PJ04JCW · 02/02/2018 12:49

I totally agree! They give me a really bad rash. FYI Morrisons own brand are (currently) unscented. Or get some washable ones?

UpstartCrow · 02/02/2018 12:49

They stink, I'm allergic to a lot of perfumes but had to use one because it was all I had and it made me itchy.
I buy own brand unscented ones now. I dont think I've ever been able to smell another women on her period, they're designed to make women feel paranoid.

Morphene · 02/02/2018 12:52

They are a travesty designed to create yet another problem (actual stinks due to infection and irritation) so they can sell you yet more shitty products to fix that....

I found some 'sensitive' (normal) pads in boots once and bought all the ones they had because I have such a job finding them anywhere else now.

I can't really describe how much the advent of scented pads has pissed me off.

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 02/02/2018 12:59

Oh god I’d be so upset with scented things near my fanjo. Recipe for thrush!

andysghost · 02/02/2018 13:05

They are the devils work, those always ones in the boxes are very good and unscented, but I'm still mad with always for scenting the other range. The smell literally makes me gag, and not one woman I know likes scented sanitary stuff so just why?!

thetemptationofchocolate · 02/02/2018 13:07

I think they smell like cheap disinfectant, don't like them at all :(

Fintress · 02/02/2018 13:10

They are the devils work

More or less what my gynae consultant said. She said she had had more than her fair share of patients with recurring infections caused by them.

happymummy12345 · 02/02/2018 13:11

I think they are pointless. I remember years ago I accidentally got scented, I was in agony.

WobblyLondoner · 02/02/2018 13:13

So agree. I started a thread about this same subject last year because I was so fed up with buying scented one by mistake. The key is to look for 'sensitive'.

I had a long email exchange with Always about it but they just said that they were meeting consumer demand (which frankly is nonsense - they are playing a massive role in building up demand for something by making young women worry that they smell). Drives me crazy.

And as for the smell - on the rare occasions I have to wear a scented one I feel as though I've got a massive sign round my neck - "hey, I've got my period / that's why I smell like a bathroom sanitiser".

juddyrockingcloggs · 02/02/2018 13:14

I kept getting repeat bouts of thrush every month, I used 'always' and it never crossed my mind that it could be the god awful chemical fragrance they put in them. Anyway, I saw it somewhere else ?possibly on here) and bought some cheap Superdrug none fragranced ones and haven't had thrush since.

Plus, what is so wrong with the smell anyway? Why does such a natural part of being a woman require a fragrance?

bettycat81 · 02/02/2018 13:15

But sanitary products are a luxury item.... luxury deserves a scent Wink Hmm

EggsonHeads · 02/02/2018 13:16

I just don't understand why anyone would want to wear something that is so smelly that it essentially announces your period to everyone.

Euphemism · 02/02/2018 13:17

Have to say that while I’ve never noticed the smell of a woman on her period I always notice the stink of Always air freshener on other women. Yes it is that strong.

Co-op do great unscented ones.

LemonShark · 02/02/2018 13:19

That's odd you struggle to find non scented. They're everywhere near me. It's more unusual to find scented.

WheresTheHooferDoofer · 02/02/2018 13:22

Wilkinsons do a basic unscented panty liner - pack of 30 for 50p, I think, don't know about the rest of the range.

But yes, I can smell the scented stuff on women a lot of the time, yuk.

Andro · 02/02/2018 13:26

They are absolutely evil!

NorbertTheDragon · 02/02/2018 13:30

Who the hell is buying them? I've seen so many threads on here about how shit they are and the vast majority of posters agree, but there must be loads of people buying them for them to change over.

Where are these people?

I now put up with odd looks when I sniff packets in the shop.

I use bodyform. I've heard they do do scented ones too, but haven't come across them yet. (Still sniff to check though, just in case I'm caught out)

Seriously thinking about using cloth pads again.

Butchmanda · 02/02/2018 13:34

I totally agree! I am now to be found sniffing all the packets and boxes in the supermarket. Must look very weird. Packaging is unclear and often misleading. And often you can't smell the scent until you get home and open the packet. Hideous.

HollyBayTree · 02/02/2018 13:35

Isn't it funny how the world goes in circles? My mother was so pleased when sanitary products hit the shelves, she hated as a young teenager, being made to scrub out and boil her 'rags' for reuse. And now some people think its so envogue to return to those 1930's times.

Soubriquet · 02/02/2018 13:37

I've bought my first lot of reusable pads. Due on any day now to try them

GeekyBlinders · 02/02/2018 13:37

I have to get Always 'sensitive' pads as they're the only unscented ones they do. And they're really hard to find!

RubyWho · 02/02/2018 13:38

After being sick and tired of standing about in Boots/Tesco/Superdrug/Wherever sniffing packets of SanPro, I went to resuable (cloth) a few months ago and have honestly never looked back.

Down with this sort of thing!

BBQsAreSooooOverrated · 02/02/2018 13:39

The sanpro aisle in Tesco reeks now. I have to sniff the packs to check which ones are scent free. They smell hideous.

Ansumpasty · 02/02/2018 13:40

I agree, they make my wee burn.

Try Always Infinity, they're the bees knees
